I think we still have the exp and talent to be an above avg D, but maybe won't be as consistent...

Ill tell you what tho: it'll be good to have coaches that can make decent in game defensive adjustments when the other team presents an element that we didn't initially game plan for. ie: Seattle tearing us up with the read option in the 2nd half of that game this yr :smh:

Marinelli may remain Bears' defensive coordinator
Other key assistants could be back too

By Dan Pompei, Chicago Tribune reporter
10:06 p.m. CST, January 7, 2013

Last year the Bears decided to replace general manager Jerry Angelo but retain head coach Lovie Smith.

This year there are indications they could follow a similar path on a different level of the organizational flow chart.

A good chance exists the team will hire a new head coach but retain defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli, and possibly other key assistants, according to those with knowledge of the situation.

Marinelli and the other assistant coaches from Smith's staff remain under contract, and the Bears are not allowing them to interview for other coaching vacancies. The reason is there is a chance the Bears will want to retain them.

It will depend mostly on the desires of the new head coach. If the candidate the team settles on wants a different defensive coordinator, it is unlikely anyone will stand in his way.

But it is clear Marinelli is highly regarded by the organization.

Retaining Marinelli would enable the Bears to keep their defensive system intact, which could help the Bears stay competitive in the near future. It also might make the team more interested in retaining free-agent-to-be linebacker Brian Urlacher.

Marinelli is one of the most highly regarded assistants in the league because of his abilities as a defensive line tutor, motivator and strategist. If the Bears hire a young head coach, or an inexperienced head coach, Marinelli would provide another benefit because he has head-coaching experience and could be an adviser of sorts.

If Marinelli is retained, he and the new head coach could decide to retain other defensive assistants from Smith's staff.

Quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates also remains a possibility to return because of his connection with Jay Cutler.

The interview process kept humming along Monday, when Bears general manager Phil Emery interviewed Montreal Alouettes coach Marc Trestman in Chicago, according to ESPN Cleveland. Trestman also was reportedly speaking with the Browns about their head coaching vacancy.

Other interviews are expected to take place this week, including Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell and Texans offensive coordinator Rick Dennison, as well as Packers offensive coordinator Tom Clements on Thursday.

Two more names popped up late Monday night. Former Bears linebacker and 49ers head coach Mike Singletary, currently a Vikings assistant, is expected to interview with Emery. It is believed Singletary's inclusion comes at the suggestion of the McCaskey family, led by Chairman George McCaskey. The other candidate also comes from the Vikings: well-regarded special teams coach Mike Priefer.

Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians was released from a Baltimore hospital Monday and is likely to interview soon as well.

Some of the candidates the Bears are interested in, especially Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, might be in greater demand after Oregon coach Chip Kelly informed teams he would not take an NFL job this year.

Toub interviews for Bears' head-coaching job

By Dan Pompei, Tribune reporter
8:34 a.m. CST, January 8, 2013

Chicago Bears general manager Phil Emery is looking in many places to find the next head coach of the Bears, including in his own back yard.

Among the candidates who have interviewed for the position is Bears special teams coach Dave Toub, a source said.

Toub has been a head-coaching candidate in the past. He interviewed with the Dolphins for their vacancy last year.

He is the fourth special teams coach who is a known candidate. The others are Keith Armstrong of the Falcons, Joe DeCamillis of the Cowboys and Mike Priefer of the Vikings.

Coaches with an offensive background who have interviewed or are scheduled to interview include Bruce Arians of the Colts, Darrell Bevell of the Seahawks, Pete Carmichael of the Saints, Tom Clements of the Packers, Rick Dennison of the Texans, Mike McCoy of the Broncos, Mike Sullivan of the Bucs and Marc Trestman of the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.

Additionally, former Bears great and Vikings assistant head coach Mike Singletary is scheduled to interview.

The Bears did not have any return touchdowns in 2012, but Toub’s special teams unit still finished eighth in the comprehensive special teams rankings popularized by Dallas Morning News writer Rick Gosselin and now used league-wide.

It was the eighth time in nine seasons Toub’s unit has had a top-10 finish. The Bears were third in 2011 and fourth in 2010 and had consecutive No. 1 finishes in 2006 and 2007.

Toub and Emery share a bond in strength and conditioning. Toub spent 15 seasons as a strength coach at Missouri and Texas El Paso.

So it's Trestman. Lets TALK about it....

Im good with the hire. My feeling is if this guy can't upgrade our offense, then Bill Walsh himself couldn't. I feel confident we will finally have a competent O very soon. Meaning having an identity...and no more having to burn timeouts once it twice a game cuz Cutlass isn't getting the call quick enough...

Also hearing he's keeping Marinelli..

Bears | Tim Brown a critic of Marc Trestman

Wed, 16 Jan 2013 10:06:36 -0800

Former NFL WR Tim Brown said he has doubts whether Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman will succeed with his new team. Brown played under Trestman, who once served as offensive coordinator with the Oakland Raiders. Brown wonders whether Trestman has the leadership skills to lead an NFL team. "(There's a lot more to coaching than just Xs and Os," Brown said. "You have to be able to deal with players and that's the reason (former Oakland Raiders head coach) Bill Callahan hasn't succeeded as a head coach. Because he's a smart guy, knows football like the back of his hand, but when it comes to leading (men), it's a totally different intangible you have to have. It's going to be very interesting to see how (Trestman) and Jay Cutler get along, that's for sure."

Wed, 16 Jan 2013 17:58:43 -0800

Chicago Bears special teams coach Dave Toub said Wednesday, Jan. 16, that WR Devin Hester just needs to start having fun to return to the form that made him one of the most dangerous players in the NFL. "He still has a lot of talent," Toub said in a radio interview. "You see it in practice. It's more mental with him. He has to get his mind right, and once that thing starts clicking, he's going to be fine."

I saw some mock draft with Te'o...after the Alabama game I don't think his game is going to translate to the NFL

I saw a couple of other mock drafts. One had them taking Tyler Eifert and the other had the Bears taking Alec Ogletree. I would like the drafting of Ogletree though O-line still needs to be the main priority. Ogletree led Georgia in tackles while missing several games. He could probably play outside linebacker initially if they bring back Urlacher.

Yeah, I saw some others with O-Lineman. This Te'o shit probably bumped him out of the first round.

As a LB coach or coordinator, not as a head coach. He was an unmitigated disaster in San Fran.

I feel he took alot of the blame and did not get enough of the credit, he turned a shit team into a contender he was the reason they have all the talent they have he is the reason that defense has the reputation they have. I think he needed to find an offensive coordinator that would have put him in the same position as harbaugh but its funny this story seems familiar Tampa bay

I agree. I was very high on him till I see all those arm tackles :smh:

via Tapatalk 2

hard to tackle and dominate when your so called perennial D-line was getting man handled, even ray lewis knew he needed a d line thats why he got on the front office to get nata and the rest of that d-line

I feel like the bears need alot we def need another Wr a burner even, we need to get young on d, and we need an o-line like a crack head needs a hit but if the front office was paying attention there was a o guard from Kentucky that was putting in work maybe we can get him 2nd or 3rd round and pick up that boy from bama as another guard and maybe get that tackle from central Michigan

Well, I will again point to my previous post in here, even ray lewis knew he needed a d-line to keep him clean, its hard to tackle when you got guards on your ass all day that d-line looked like kids against men. But I see your logic that maybe the move, but is roach mike material ? and if not we still gotta replace urlacher, why did we pass on those middle linebackers from bama last year smh:smh:

I personally dont want Te'o on the squad... there are other more solid ILBs that will be coming out.

If you soft enough to lie about some pussy on a global level... you're too soft for the NFL.
