Nets end Dwight Howard talks

http://espn.go.com/new-york/nba/sto...yn-nets-end-pursuit-dwight-howard-source-says

A potential trade of Dwight Howard to the Brooklyn Nets is dead after a last-gasp attempt to work a trade fell through Wednesday afternoon, a source said.

Sources said the Nets decided they had to know by Wednesday if they could complete a trade for Howard.

The list of potential trade destinations for Dwight Howard keeps growing. Would he be better as a Net, Laker, or Rocket?

General manager Billy King is meeting with the agent for center Brook Lopez in Los Angeles on Wednesday, sources said, and it was expected that he would either sign Lopez with the intent on dealing him to the Orlando Magic for Howard or sign Lopez with the idea of keeping him and moving forward without Howard.

The Nets were convinced the chance of making a deal for Howard will be undermined as teams sign free agents and eliminate their flexibility to be trade partners in providing the draft picks, salary-cap room and young talent the Magic are seeking for their disgruntled All-Star center.

Lopez's agent has been pushing the Nets to either sign Lopez themselves or do a sign-and-trade by the end of the day, sources told ESPN.com's Chad Ford. The Nets are fearful that Lopez will receive an offer sheet from another team if they don't act by the end of the day, which would kill the opportunity to move him in a sign-and-trade for Howard.

There are rising fears within the Nets, sources told ESPN.com's Marc Stein, that the Portland Trail Blazers will come after Lopez -- a restricted free agent -- as their next frontcourt target after a bid to sign fellow restricted free agent Roy Hibbert away from Indiana has been foiled by the Pacers, who have matched the four-year offer to Hibbert worth nearly $60 million that Portland had intended to offer but ultimately decided against.

On Tuesday night, the Houston Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers rejoined the Nets as the most serious potential trade partners with the Magic on a Howard deal, sources close to the process told Stein.

One source close to the process told ESPN.com that the Trail Blazers and Charlotte Bobcats have informed Lopezs camp that they are prepared to sign him to four-year max offer sheets.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Rockets are discussing a multitude of trade scenarios with the Magic, offering to serve both as the team that would acquire Howard in a direct trade between the clubs and also as a third team that would participate in a trade that lands Howard with the Lakers and brings All-Star center Andrew Bynum to Houston.

Sources say that new Magic general manager Rob Hennigan might feel more comfortable taking back a package of youngsters, recent draftees and future first-round draft picks -- while shedding some long-term salary as well -- than taking on Bynum as Howard's replacement and facing a similar challenge in convincing him to commit to the franchise long-term like the Magic have dealt with for months with Howard.

@ eewwll ya it's looking like Orl is gonna dick around and end up in the exact same situation they were in last season w/ the shit going down to the trade deadline unless he breaks or LA takes a chance on him

That would be swinging for the fences indeed

I think LA has a fair shot if the Magic refuse to deal him to BK...the fact that they can make a serious championship run instantly might get him to slowly change his mind to re-sign w/ them...the best chance of that deal working out is the 3-way w/ Houston that has Bynum ending up in Hou...fuck Cleveland and/or Kris Humphries tho for real...big time...I'm still keep my fingers crossed that Dwight holds tough and either gets traded to BK today or during the season if he's still in Orl or a team rents him...but Orl playing around like they in the driver's seat...if Dwight isn't traded before the season starts they will have fucked themselves to get raped if Dwight is still there around the trade deadline...he has to hold firm tho to only re-signing w/ BK...this is almost (not exactly) tho like the Melo standoff...another poster said it before but I didn't peep it then

Yeah the Magic should start fresh with young dudes and save money. If they draft well they could retool quicker.

I think ultimately he ends up with the Nets next year if the lakers don't win the chip this season or him and Kobe clash

I don't know if he can come to the Nets as a free agent if a team let's him walk...it would have to be a trade I think...that's another risk for the Lakers...things need to look good early if they trade for Dwight...cuz if the trade deadline comes and he still hasn't signed an extension then they risk losing him for nothing...idk shit can go either way...

Ya it's pretty much "now" (this season) or never

there is a chance a trade happens with the Nets at the deadline with Lopez. The Nets cant trade him for 90 days but the question would be why then but now.

either way Dwight is the reason this happened. If didnt opt in would be a Net today.

Ya man...I'm not sure but I think it was a matter of tryna have his cake and eat it too...idk much about the contracts and shit but I think by opting in for the last year it gave him the chance to make the most $$$ w/ an extension...and that's why he did it and then pushed for a sign and trade rather than walk last season...I could be dead wrong tho...and that plan will backfire if he walks after this season as he'll be leaving $$$ on the table I think plus not being able to sign w/ the team of his choice...again I'm not sure if I'm accurate about this...either way he forced himself in a corner he just has to hold tough and hopefully that stance will scare the Lakers off

Yo on another note...Knicks still aint matched for Lin yet...there's rumors (unfounded) he's upset the Knicks didn't make him an offer first and let Houston dictate the market for him :dunno:

I dont see why Lin getting his panties in a bunch. Why the fuck would the Knicks make an offer when they have the final word. Knowing Dolan they could've made a deal that was more cost prohibitive than what the Rockets offered.

either way for the Knicks organization it made no sense to show their hand and Lin should be smart enough to know better.

To be fair it was just a rumor I saw on a couple sites...he tweeted in response to the rumor and said it wasn't true...but I'm still surprised Houston's offer hasn't been matched yet...

the reporters are saying Houston hasn't given the knicks the qualifying offer sheet to match since they have been busy trying to work this dwight deal. They will do it, its just not a priority for the Rockets. Once the knicks have that sheet they will match it.

I think the Knicks are trying to gauge what it will take for them to get CP3... and that's what's holding up the J.Lin situation... BUT... apparently, they're gonna match by Wednesday.

Makes sense I guess

That was my suspicion too...that they're exploring what else they can do w/ that $$$ in the years to come and if signing Lin limits that

Isn't he a ufa after this season?

Ya but the Nets won't really have $$$ to sign him since they'll be tied up w/ Lopez and his contract mostly...fuck it...if Dwight isn't moved out of Orl today the closer this shit lags to the trade deadline the more it shifts to the Nets favor if Dwight can hold his resolve...teams might be willing to rent him for a season but not half a season...damn another season of trade rumors...I don't think I could take it

Thats the thing. The nets havent signed Brook yet and with his foot problem and the way they threw his name in trades over the last two years, I don't know if he wants to be a Net. I think if we get Chris Kaman and another pf (Carl Landry, Dejuan Blair to name a few) we should be in good shape. Us signing Brook and Hump was based upon trading them. Since the magic vetoed the trade there's no rush to sign these guys. With the scorers we have aquired we need our big man to play d and grab boards. Two things in which Lopez is horrible at. We dont have to break the bank this year with signing those guys. We could pick up some decent talent who complement the parts we have already and make a run at Dwight if he doesnt sign a extenstion this season with whoever he ends up with.

Lopez wants a Max deal. If bk doesn't give it Portland or Charlotte will and if the nets match they can't trade him for a year as opposed to signing him themselves the dealing him in Feb. Nets on the clock.

Reports are showing that we are in a rush to sign Lopez @ least and to a fully guaranteed contract (max I think) @ that cuz Bobcats/Trailblazers was preparing to make offers :dunno: who knows tho

Looks like all trade discussions w/ all teams for Howard are on hold...that nigga better stay strong and keep pushing for BK

Im just don't think he fits the nets roster with him being just a scorer. A team of just scorers doesn't do well (Knicks)

So now the Knicks are a roster of scorers? You must be thinking of the Marbury, Crawford, Eddy Curry Knicks. Last time I checked the only 3 "scorers" for NY were Melo, Stat, and JR....

Novak,Lin, Kidd(spot up shooter)

Lin was like 6th in steals before he got hurt, Kidd is a great defender, camby also an excellent defender, Tyson, shump... Melo is a good man defender, Jeffries, good defender, white, good defender, jr is a good defender... The Knicks rnt a team of scores.

They finished 5th in defense too...

Don't gotta lie now that ur a nets fan.

Really? Camby and Jeffries aren't defensive players? Ok.

Of the guys you mentioned only Lin can semi-create his own shot. Spot up shooters really shouldn't count.

Nets may have broken cba rules with that overseas cat they signed. Hearing rumors of under the table money...that circumvents the cap... Nets may have to full mle him and get hard capped or face punishment from stern if the league pursues the matter...

Damn how u get caught like that?

http://espn.go.com/new-york/nba/sto...ooklyn-nets-agree-brook-lopez-60-million-deal

The Brooklyn Nets have agreed to terms with restricted free agent center Brook Lopez on a four-year, $60 million max contract, a league source confirmed to ESPN NewYork.com.

This effectively ends Brooklyn's pursuit of Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard, since Lopez can't be traded until Jan. 15 once he signs the contract, per rules of the collective bargaining agreement.

Nets general manager Billy King was in Los Angeles negotiating with Lopez's agent, Arn Tellem, on Wednesday.

Lopez, 24, played just five games last season because of foot and ankle injuries. He owns career averages of 17.4 points and 7.5 rebounds in 251 career contests over five seasons -- all with the Nets.
