NBA salary cap set for $58.044 million next season. Tax level is $70.3 million, and teams exceeding it pay $1 tax of every $1 over.

The NBA has announced that the salary cap for the 12-13 season is $58.044 million.
The luxury tax level is set at $70.307 million.
The cap is the same as it was for the 11-12 season.

NBA Sets Salary Cap and Luxury Tax Level for 2012-2013 Season

The NBA has announced the salary cap and luxury tax level for the 2012-2013 season.

As expected, the figures didn't change, meaning that teams are free to do as planned this offseason.

It may seem a bit harsh to have a $1 tax for every $1 over, but there's no other way to deter big-spending teams from blatantly ignoring the luxury tax and doing as they please.

Per NBA.com, the minimum a team must spend on their players' collective salaries has been set at $49.337 million, which is 85 percent of the maximum cap.

Teams should take advantage of this dollar-for-dollar luxury tax penalty while they can, because there will be a much higher penalty instituted prior to the 2013-2014 season.

Next season's taxpayer "mini" mid-level exception will be $3.09 million. The mid-level exception will stay at the 2011-2012 level of $5 million.

Every year, the players' association and the league have a meeting of the minds to determine what the salary cap will be for the upcoming season. Their decision stems from the projected Basketball Related Income, as well as other factors.

There's little doubt that both the salary cap and the luxury tax level will rise as the revenue of the NBA as a whole does. The NBA is making more money than ever before, so there's no reason to think that the numbers for the coming seasons won't be striking.

This is what teams have been waiting for. Now that front offices know the salary cap and luxury tax level for sure, they will be able to sign various free agents with the July moratorium period coming to an end Wednesday morning, July 11, at 12:01 AM ET.

Dahntay Jones would be a good pickup to play the SG spot. Even better when Shump comes back as we wouldn't lose defensive intensity. Damn we sure are looking at a lot of ex Nuggets

I am not sure this move is possible. Jones opted into his player option contract so moving him would only happen if the Pacers felt they needed to shred contracts to make up for keeping Hibbert. As a change of look from JR while Shump heals he will be ok.

found this

"I always said that this superteam thing was stupid, and teams have all the right in the world to try to get better, no matter what
.
But now this is getting ridiculous. The Big 3 + Ray Allen and Rashard on the bench?
.
This is even more unfair than the 86 celtics with Parish, Bird, McHale + Bill walton, the6th man of the year and Dennis Johnson, finals MVP"

guess they took their physicals today...

Restricted free-agent center Brook Lopez is progressing toward an agreement for a maximum contract with the Brooklyn Nets, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Nets president Billy King and Lopez’s agent, Arn Tellem, are finalizing the length of the deal – four years for $58 million, or five years for $78 million – and ironing out protections on the back end to account for a right foot that Lopez broke twice in the past year, sources said.

Once Lopez signs the deal, he can’t be traded until December.

Dwight looking less and less likely.... Also how the heck does anyone justify Brook Lopez getting a 78 Million contract? If that is true that shit is a bad contract before its even been given out. Still the Nyets do have a squad even with him there instead of Dwight.

Once that contract is signed, no one is taking on that shit.

Cousins/Thompson/Robinson>>>>

ill ass rotation right there..and they all under 25 :itsawrap:

yeah I can't even knock that group, not the best in NBA but I cant knock it

I was telling niggas at work the day after the draft how much of a power move drafting robinson was to pair with cousins man

shit, that two young BEASTS

looking much better than my mavs

I just dont think if they had those same picks those same years they would have got the young talent the kings go

some sort of foreign player who reach would have been involved

Cousins needs to mature. Thompson is decent, and will get you 9 points, 6-7 rebounds a game. Robinson hasn't played a game yet and is a 6"7-6"8 power forward. It will be tough, but he has the work ethic, and talent to be good.

Not the best front-line now, but if they all live up to what is expected of them then sure.

NBA trade rumors are going to be all the rage around these parts for the near future because, like it or not, that's the only way the Minnesota Timberwolves are going to be able to acquire Nicolas Batum from the Portland Trail Blazers. The Wolves have already said they plan to sign the restricted free agent to an offer sheet, but the Blazers have said they'll match -- even though Batum has been pretty clear that he'd rather play in Minnesota.

Regardless, if that's going to happen, it seems like the Wolves will have to give up something in return. They made Luke Ridnour and/or J.J. Barea expendable when they came to terms with Alexey Shved earlier Tuesday afternoon, but they apparently are balking at moving Derrick Williams.

Chris Haynes@ChrisBHaynes
With all the different Nicolas Batum trade scenarios, I'm hearing Derrick Williams is "untouchable." #Blazers

It's not surprising that the Wolves want to keep last year's second overall pick, but there aren't many other attractive options that the Blazers might be interested in (that Minnesota should consider trading, anyway). We'll learn more in the next 24 hours.

Minnesota thought Blazers wouldn't put up a fight. This could get interesting...

Robinson reminds me of a young Larry Johnson

Co-sign. Robinson's 6'10

Lake Show still got it though despite their issues.

Brook has the skills to pay the bills but he's as soft as wet toilet paper.

With that being said, that four year deal isn't bad and if we could resign Hump & Green and get a vet point guard we should be in a good shape. If Hump don't wanna come back we should pickup Carl Landry

Word has it that Dwight won't be a Magic by the end of the day...I think the Lakers are gonna take a gamble on him and trade for him even w/ no guarantees of him re-signing w/ them

cause rashard lewis hasn't played like crap since he got that new deal and got off the steroids....

Allen was a good pick up that helps the heat but people are hyping Rashard Lewis like they're going to ignore the last couple of seasons of craptitude that he's been playing.
