Off The Wall is A Way Better Album Than Thriller

off the wall was an all around banger............... it was his last real street / club joint!!!!!!!! thriller was more of the introduction to the cinematic / visualization of his music which made it better to sell........ He made MTV with thriller......... thats when black people started to pay attention TOO mtv! Just to catch that thriller, billy jean, ect...........On BAD...... he wen way left with the types of sounds that he used and to me was more of a hard core jackson fan album....... back ten unless an artist of his caliber had a project out you didnt see what they looked like again until you saw them on the album cover....... that pic of him lookin pecan tan w a super nose job fuck a lot of black people up....... but the music overshadowed what he looked like to a certain extent.

Being 9 y/o when Off the Wall dropped I can remember my mum getting it and it would be on loud every saturday morning as she did the housework probably exclusively until with much awaited and anticipated Thriller was released. By this time I was 14 and I remember all the hype involved with the Thriller video and the making of the Thriller video.
Thinking back I feel people bought and played Off the Wall on the merits that Michael had earned with the Jackson 5. Thriller was bought to the masses and marketed i8n a different manner; through musical videos.
I never did get as excited about the Thriller album as I did about Off the Wall. Don't get it twisted both are great pieces of work

Off the wall was dope of course. But I gotta go with Thriller. Just of the strentgth of Billie Jean, Human Nature and P.Y.T alone.
I'm listening to this album right now and had forgotten how amazingly smooth it is. No skip-overs at all.

I'm inclined to agree also.
"OFF THE WALL" had that "Q" sound that was steeped in R&B, Jazz, and Pop-Funk. Same type of production style he used on his own records and others he produced like The Brother Johnson, Patti Austin, and James Ingram among others. It was commercial, but never strayed from its "Black" roots.

@ WAY better. Thriller was a fuckin banger. Had a lil bit of everythingI can see an argument either way, but neither is significantly better than the other.
This is clearly a matter of personal taste. The album "Off The Wall" was an awesome recording with an R&B influence. That's probably the reason it's so popular on here. But while the album had great crossover appeal, it was still mainly R&B. On the other hand, "Thriller"was a masterwork in musical diversity and had something for everyone. Sure the videos had a large impact on sales, but the music appealed to a much wider audience (as did the album "Bad").
When I'm in the mood for R&B, "Off The Wall" is my choice.
If I want a mix, "Thriller" or "Bad" does it for me.

oh shit... let me tell you man I think human nature is the BEST SONG mike ever did in a studio...since then I have NEVER heard anything like it, from the theme, lyrics, beat, the mood of the shit is just crazy! I've always thought that "Off The Wall" was his greatest album, and that "I Can't Help It" is one of the under-appreciated classics of all time. In fact, the "Rock With You" video is how I'll always remember Michael in my mind's eye. Young, at the height of his talents, yet, without any of the surgical transformations that would come in later years.

sadly i got 2 agree, excpet i dont really like mike after thriller, with exception to maybe a handful of singles. His quality slipped heavily after the 80's.
"Off The Wall " was Michael Jacksons first and IMO greatest album as it embodied Michael's soulful voice with Quincy Jones awesome production excellence to maximum effect.
"Thriller" to me, wasn't as soulful and really lacked the overall cohesion of the first album.
"Bad" was the beginning of the end.

hell no. i can not cosign. off the wall can not go single for single with thriller. PYT and Billie Jean by themselves kill it.

and someone mentioned bad vs. dangerous....i didn't really rock with dangerous too tough at the time, but grew to appreciate it later. still, bad hands down. too many bangers.

I also grew to like Dangerous more than Bad a few years ago. "Who Is It" is HELLA underrated.
Yep! I've always liked 'Off the wall' more so than 'Thriller' matter of fact, I never really like the singles 'Thriller or Beat it'. The video for Thriller scared me as a child and until recently, within the last 10 yrs, I hadn't been about to watch it without having that funny feeling that brings me back to my children. <<Folks born in the mid to late 70's know what I'm talking about. That video gave me nightmares as a child.
Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough and Rock With You both sported videos.
I am glad this question got asked because I did not really listen to Off the Wall until late adolescence because Thriller dominated the airwaves in my age demographic.
I tell you, Workin' Day and Night had me beginning to question how good the Off the wall Album really was. It was always my favorite even though, Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough and Rock With You were givens. Then, I listened to it and it started to pull closer and closer and closer to Thriller as a classic.
Do not misunderstand, I think Thriller was a play through just like off the wall but honestly, it just had a heavier rock influence. Now, that shows you the greatness of Q. He produced both of these albums, including a third, and they all had distinct sounds. He will have to go down as the greatest composer/producer of the 20th Century.
Man, does it not just have that mellow, mellow, mellow groove? Throw on that two step with a bad broad and the night is history.
Can't go wrong either way IMO. THriller may be his best seller but his best album??

It blended everything together & was better sonically than Thriller. Thriller just had those great videos & a more polished looking MJ (no disco look). He had also become a better performer on Thriller than with Off The Wall. MJ knew Off The Wall was a better album as he was pissed that it wasn't bigger & didn't receive the right push.
