Off The Wall is A Way Better Album Than Thriller

I agree.

While Thriller may have sold more records, it has a distinctively 80's sound to it (considering it defined the genre of that time.)

But with Off The Wall, it has no age lines or wrinkles to it. That album doesn't sound as if it were produced 30 years ago. It's sound is timeless.

"I can' help it" is my all time favorite MJ song.

Wow..More people with my same sentiments about the "Off The Wall" lp

Thriller ushered in the big movie experience videos allowing hime to take a world stage his videos were broadcast on network TV before any other artist period. Off The Wall is that shit cause no extra hype was attached the music speaks for itself its also brought us the true R&B Quincy Jones experience:yes: and the great song writing capabilities of Rod Temperton:yes:(Michael Jackson: "Rock with You", "Off the Wall", "Burn This Disco Out", "Baby Be Mine", "The Lady In My Life" and "Thriller", "Someone In The Dark", "Hot Street".)

Off the Wall for me :yes:

I used to say this, but after listening to

"Wanna Be Startin' Something"
"PYT"
"Beat It"
"Billie Jean"
"Human Nature"
"Lady In My Life"

I gotta call it for "Thriller"

"I Wanna Rock Wit U" maybe be one of Mike's best, if not best songs, but that 9 song set of "Thriller" is completely unparalelled.

Think about it.

You can hear 7 of the 9 songs on "Thriller" EVERYDAY on the radio, even before Mike died. 7 of 9!!!! That's like 88% of the album is iconic.

And it changed the world

Truth be told I always thought "Bad" was a better album then "Thriller"

You might be by yourself there.

The '80s cheezy synthesizer shit was the worst shit Mike did. "Off The Wall" and "Thriller" was a little bit less "80s"

I remeber when Off The Wall came out couldn't stop playing it...great tracks on it................
If you listen to Brother Johnson album Light Of the World
you can hear MJ doing some serious back ground vocals............ I guess Quincy couldn't wait too get him in the studio

I'm listening to this album right now and had forgotten how amazingly smooth it is. No skip-overs at all.

:cool::cool:

Chime in w/ you thoughts.

What's M.J.'s best album?

****MODS, CAN YOU ADD A POLL FOR ME?

I totally agree

Re: Off The Wall Vs Thriller --WHICH IS THE BETTER ALBUM?

I prefer Off the Wall. In as much he could ever be, Michael was actually still "hungry" when he made it, and had a lot riding on it. You could hear the eagerness to please (and to mature) in his voice. The album was a perfect melding of disco, soul, funk and R&B, and came at the perfect moment.

If you were around then you'd know how incredibly satisfying those back-to-back blockbuster hits, "Don't Stop ..." and "Rock with You" sounded. They were exactly the kind of instantly-intoxicating, musically and vocally sophisticated tracks you dreamed he'd be doing at that point in his career. Turned out even better than expected. :)

Thriller is basically a more polished and commercially fine-tuned remake (with less of a pure dance vibe) of Off the Wall (featuring certain parallel tracks). Just as Bad was essentially a re-make (and a lesser version) of Thriller.

Of course, the world was really geared up for Thriller after the Off the Wall breakthrough, and by adding the MTV video explosion into the mix you had the perfect ingredients for an extraordinarily successsful album and a cultural phenomenon (which both made and ultimately broke MJ).

Off The Wall is for sure my favorite MJ album, I like the funkyness of it.

If you listen to "Workin' Day and Night", you can hear how much Justin Timberlake copied Michael's style. Actually my GF thought it was a new JT song. I almost wanted to slap her.

Michael is the greatest period end of story.

Someone upload that off the wall for old times sake.

Bad sold more than off the wall also. it was his third most selling album

C/S I remember playing this on a record player @ mom's house as a teen. Its a top 10 album all time IMO

this is what i wa saying. single for single, thriller kills it. i can't even say it's close.

but music is personal preference, so......

I've always thought that "Off The Wall" was his greatest album, and that "I Can't Help It" is one of the under-appreciated classics of all time. In fact, the "Rock With You" video is how I'll always remember Michael in my mind's eye. Young, at the height of his talents, yet, without any of the surgical transformations that would come in later years.

co sign...a neighbor asked me for copies of Thriller and Bad (non - black person)...i threw in a copy of Off the Wall and said "this one is even better than those other 2" ...

'I can't help it' is one of my alltime favorites

Thriller is more of a pop mainstream album.

Off the Wall is more soulful and funky.

Thriller was ahead of its time. But musically i prefer Off the Wall. Can't help it.

Both albums are on point but I gotta go with Off the Wall on this one. Rock with you is my all time favorite MJ song.

Basically I just have to say that I liked the songs that Rod wrote, produced, arranged from both lp's. I loved the group "Heatwave" for the same reason.

Dawg... I think people are jumping the gun saying Off the Wall is better.. Thriller is SO FUCKIN STRONG because it had the big pop hits like Beat It, Billie Jean, The Girl is Mine, & Thriller but that album also had Wanna Be Starting Something, PYT, Lady in my Life & Human Nature..

Man.. that album in the #1 seller of all time for a reason..

Now, I love Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, Rock With You, Workin Day & Night, Off The Wall, I Can't Help It but I can't say it's as strong as Thriller even if Thriller has a few more pop tunes.

Quiet as kept, Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough might one of the most classic mid/uptempo songs he's ever made (& probably the most standout song on Off The Wall) but I can't really say it's "better" than either PYT or Wanna Be Starting Something.

I can certainly see the argument for Off the Wall but y'all better pop that Thriller album in again.. that shyt is 4real classic.

Re: Off The Wall Vs Thriller --WHICH IS THE BETTER ALBUM?

Agreed re: Off the Wall ... Thriller was no slouch but OTW was always my favorite MJ solo album and his best work IMHO.

Off the wall. End of thread with this track.
Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough-Will make everyone get up and dance.

pretty much sums it up.

here's my breakdown:

don't stop til you get enough > wanna be startin' something (off the wall takes this one)
billie jean > rock with you
beat it > working day and night (this is arguable, though)
thriller > get on the floor
PYT > off the wall
human nature > girlfriend
the girl is mine > she's out of my life
the lady in my life > i can't help it
baby be mine > it's the falling in love and burn this disco out

post up your comparisons.

Gotta roll with Off The Wall. The music on that album stands the test of time. Can't say the same with Thriller or Bad IMO. But I'm a huge fan of all 3.

You're basically making the point that Thriller was just a re-mix of Off the Wall, which it most certainly was.

You should have obviously linked the two McCartney-oriented songs:

"Girlfriend" (written by Paul) and "The Girl Is Mine" (co-sung by Paul)

And the two syrupy ballads:

"She's Out of My Life" and "The Lady in My Life"

I've read this forward, backwards and even in braille and I don't think I can dissagree with even a coma of this post.
I concur!!!
