Off The Wall is A Way Better Album Than Thriller

Off The Wall is for sure my favorite MJ album, I like the funkyness of it.

If you listen to "Workin' Day and Night", you can hear how much Justin Timberlake copied Michael's style. Actually my GF thought it was a new JT song. I almost wanted to slap her.

Michael is the greatest period end of story.

Damn, how old is your girlfriend? 12?

pretty much sums it up.

here's my breakdown:

don't stop til you get enough > wanna be startin' something (off the wall takes this one)
billie jean > rock with you
beat it > working day and night (this is arguable, though)
thriller > get on the floor
PYT > off the wall
human nature > girlfriend
the girl is mine > she's out of my life
the lady in my life > i can't help it
baby be mine > it's the falling in love and burn this disco out

post up your comparisons.

I'm gonna do this on a star system (outta 5 stars)

Off The Wall

1. Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough 4.5 stars
2. Rock with You 5 stars(arguably Mike's best song)
3. Working Day and Night 4 stars
4. Get on the Floor 4 stars
5. Off the Wall 4.5 stars
6. Girlfriend" (McCartney)3.5 stars(even though its about a girl, it sounds fruity as hell)
7. She's out of My Life" (Tom Bahler)4 stars (Tito stop teasing LMAO)
8. I Can't Help It 5 stars!!! (Underrated as hell, and the basis for one of my favorite De La songs "Breakdawn". Check that out off of Buhloone Mind State, a 1,2 a 1,2)
9. It's the Falling in Love 4 stars
10. Burn This Disco Out 4 stars

Overall, people who like "Off The Wall" better use the first 5 songs as the basis for that argument. It's the greatest disco album of all-time, based off of those songs, but it doesn't have the overall greatness or lyrical depth of "Thriller"

Thriller

1.Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" (Jackson)5 STARS!!!!! (Mike actually compares fame to being eaten, like a vegatable. It's one of the greatest produced songs ever)
2.Baby Be Mine" (Temperton)3.5 stars(The only non-home run on the album)
3. The Girl Is Mine" (with Paul McCartney)(Jackson)4 stars(Ok, this one isn't a home run either, but it's good
4. Thriller" (Temperton)4 stars (The video is better than the song, but the song's dope too.
5. Beat It" (Jackson) 5 stars(one of the greatest riffs ever. One of the greatest songs ever)
6. Billie Jean" (Jackson) 5 stars(One of the greatest basslines ever, one of the greatest songs ever)
7. Human Nature" (Bettis/Porcaro)5 stars (arguably Mike's greatest "conscious ballad")
8. P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)" (Ingram/Jones) 4.5 stars
9 The Lady In My Life" (Temperton) 4 stars (good song, is the basis for plenty hip-hop records too)

Overall, "Thriller" has about 4 or 5 of the GREATEST songs ever written on it, and it has more lyrical depth. From songs about groupie stalkers, to a plea for world peace, and songs about ending gang violence, and songs about how the media exploits people. It's the most complete pop record EVER made.

I know most Black folk disagree with me, but I gotta go against the grain and go with "Thriller" based on all that.

Don't Stop Till You Get Enough still gives me goosebumps when it starts and the hairs on my arms raise. That song is MY SHIT! That whole album was crazy. Def my favorite.

EVERY Album featuring new content that Mike made was a STONE COLD CLASSIC, and I challenge anyone to disagree. I made a playlist consisting of 115 of my most favorite MJ/Jackson 5 songs, on my IPOD and I have been shuffling that shit nonstop since June 25th! I honestly haven't got tired of it and I don't know if I ever will. All my ringtones on my phone are MJ songs. I be lettin' that shit ring, forcing me to have to call people back. :smh::dance: That being said:

I gotta go in this order with the albums:

1. Thriller (self explanatory)
2. Off the Wall (dope as hell, but a 9.9999 to Thriller's 10)
3. Dangerous (Folks forget this joint was supposed to have 10 singles. The title track was canceled due to the allegations, but even still, 9 singles is ridiculous.
4. Bad (Great songs, but not as poignant to me as Dangerous)
5. Invincible (This shit is seriously underrated. Had it been marketed right, I see at least 9 legitimate money making singles)
6. History (Considering ONLY the new songs, its an exceptional product, but IMO its a bit less powerful then the five above.)
7. Blood on the Dance Floor (Its the worst of his albums, but still underrated IMO.)

My favorite MJ song is a tie between BEAT IT and It's the Falling in Love.

Aside from the familiar joints that everyone else likes, I'm also partial to Why You Wanna Trip On Me (Dangerous), Don't Walk Away, Break of Dawn, Butterflies, and Heaven Can Wait (all from Invincible), and They Don't Care About Us, and Earth Song (History).

I don't know about WAY better:lol:

This debate really shows how top of the line MJ was. Looking at the question in a different way sheds a different light.

It is said MJ cried when he didn't win album of the year for OTW(which is CRAZY). If he had won would he have crafted Thriller differently?

I really can't pick one over the other, but I tend to lean towards Thriller most times for songs like Human Nature, PYT, Billie Jean, and Wanna Be Startin Somethin.

With that said when I go to clubs his songs from OTW usually get the rinse more such as Don't Stop Til You Get Enough and Rock With You. Someone said that album is timeless and I have to agree. That may be the answer right there.

I also think Bad is under-rated too. Change, Another Part of Me, Dirty Diana were a variation of Human Nature, Wanna Be Startin Something, and Bille Jean imo. Bad I liked, but I can see why Prince stayed the hell away from it:lol:

They were both great, but I've got too many fond memories of dancin in the clubs to Off The Wall back in 79. A lot of people say Thriller was more pop and created a lot of white fans. I'd have to disagree, he already had them, Don't stop till ya get enough, Rock with you, Off the Wall, and Workin Day and Night, were played a lot in predominantly white clubs.

Off the wall was dope of course. But I gotta go with Thriller. Just of the strentgth of Billie Jean, Human Nature and P.Y.T alone.

Kosine.

Its largely an opinion thing and may even boil down to what era you hail from. Make no mistake Off the Wall was one of his best albums and even with its success and the love in this post I still say its underrated. It was definitely more soulful.

But Thriller......just off those 3 songs murders any other album by MJ or anyone else. I like the song comparisons in this post as well. Great as Off the Wall is the single to single depth compared with Thriller is so far off I got to agree with Porn Addict - technically not even close. Fuck a MTV music video. Matter of fact im gonna go out on a limb and take Billie Jean by itself >>> the entire OTW.

Not hating on anybodys opinion - I see some cats even like that Bad album. (still an MJ/Quincy production so it was still aight tho). Im partial to Dangerous just off of Remember the Time.

naw man. videos didn't push thriller. u can have all the vids u want, but if the songs are garbage, nobody will buy them. thriller was mj's masterpiece. off the wall is a close 2nd though

Off the wall and I'm only 28.
I listen to that album front to back almost everyday.

Only song that makes me go :hmm: is at the end of " she's out of my life " where he does that little homo cry.

If I was Jermaine, I'd smack some sense into Micheal's nonsense.

On another note, have anyone of you all ever listened to Off the wall/Thriller/Bad and really just listen to the instrumentals?

The Instrumentals on OTW are Crazy!!!

What about this one?

His last Motown album. Important transitional one. You can hear the development of a more mature R&B/Soul sound in his voice, though the Motown assembly-line songwriting is still on the "bubblegum" side. Should probably be re-evaluated. It's the source of the song that Kim Fields later covered, "Dear Michael."

Just did a full factory restore and I forgot to install FFvB so I can fully block you from my BGOL experience

That Wikipedia-influenced reply didn't help your case.

Off The Wall wins just on the strength of this song

I will admit i finally got around to listening to baby be mine and i can officially say that thriller doesn't have one bad song on it.

Off the Wall>>>>>>>>>>>>>Thriller
Thriller was too overproduced for its time, 1983...it pushed pop & b forward but that shit was too much going on. Quincy is like the Timbaland of his day.

Yall ninjas buggin....Off the Wall was a great album, but Thriller is the best R&B album of all time.

Thriller was a slicker, more POP-oriented COPY of Off the Wall. There are no R&B songs on Thriller as good as "Don't Stop ..." or "Rock with You."

I'm listening to this album right now and had forgotten how amazingly smooth it is. No skip-overs at all.

:cool::cool:

Chime in w/ you thoughts.

What's M.J.'s best album?

****MODS, CAN YOU ADD A POLL FOR ME?

I agree the best album he has ever made!!!!!!!!!!!
:yes::yes::yes::yes::yes::yes::yes::yes:

(He was still black then!!!!)

Great thread!

Ever since my teenage year, I've been riding 100% for Off the Wall over Thriller because I felt like MJ made that joint for us, while Thriller was for the general public.

But, then I listened to Thriller on Spotify yesterday and now I can't call it. Off the Wall is definitely more soulful, but Thriller might possibly be the greatest end-to-end album ever created. People also talk about Thriller, Billie Jean, and Beat It, but I fux with Human Nature, Lady in my Life, and Baby Be Mine because those remind me of Off the Wall.
