Browns expected to start Johnny Manziel against Steelers

The Browns are expected to start Johnny Manziel against the Steelers on Sunday, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Earlier, Browns coach Mike Pettine would not name a starting quarterback for what he described as competitive reasons.

Pettine said Manziel took the majority of reps in Friday's practice and that Josh McCown was limited as he recovers from rib injuries. Pettine said earlier in the week that McCown would start if healthy.

Manziel started for an injured McCown in a 31-10 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Nov. 5. Manziel finished 15-of-33 for 168 yards and a touchdown, and after the game the second-year player said he "absolutely" wanted to remain the starter.

"Consistent with the procedures of the league's Personal Conduct Policy, we have examined the available evidence regarding the recent incident involving Johnny Manziel," the league said in a statement. "Our investigation included a thorough review of information from law enforcement and our own interviews with multiple individuals, including the two involved in the incident. Based on the information gathered, we have concluded that there is an insufficient basis on which to take disciplinary action. In all cases of this nature, our concern under the Personal Conduct Policy goes well beyond the issue of discipline, and we have made comprehensive professional resources available on a confidential basis."​

No charges were filed against Manziel following the Oct. 12 incident, when witnesses reported him driving dangerously on an interstate highway. His girlfriend, Colleen Crowley, said he had beaten her in the car and pushed her head against the glass, but she later declined to press charges.

After questioning both Manziel and Crowley, police in Avon, Ohio, allowed the couple to leave for Manziel's home together. Police smelled alcohol on Manziel's breath, but did not give him a field sobriety test because he showed no signs of inebriation, police said.

Manziel admitted to having a couple of drinks downtown on a Browns off day. He had spent 10 weeks in a treatment facility in the offseason.

Callers to 911 on Oct. 12 reported Manziel driving at a high rate of speed on the shoulder of the highway. Witnesses told police that Crowley had attempted to jump out of the moving car as it exited the highway. A 911 caller also said Manziel cut across several lanes of traffic to exit.

When the news about the incident broke a few days after it happened, the couple both posted on social media that they had an argument that had gotten out of hand and were fine. On Nov. 5, Crowley posted a video on Instagram of Manziel in the passenger seat of a car holding a puppy as she drove.

Earlier Tuesday, Manziel was named the Browns' starter for the remainder of the season.

He has started the last two games for the Browns with Josh McCown, who is out with injured ribs. The team lost 31-10 to the Cincinnati Bengals and 30-9 to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Manziel threw for 168 yards and had a 75.5 rating against Cincinnati, but he rebounded to throw for 372 yards with a 95.8 rating against Pittsburgh.

The QB said it's important to show he can be trusted off the field.

"Coach (Mike) Pettine came in and said he didn't want to micromanage me or any of the other guys on our time off, but at the same time I let him know that I am not going to do anything that is going to be a distraction to this team or be an embarrassment to the organization," Manziel said. "That was the thing he stressed to me as well."

Johnny Manziel says he "made somewhat of a decent living" by selling autographed items during his days at Texas A&M, but that he "never took a dollar" until after he won the Heisman Trophy in 2012.

Manziel recounted selling his autograph during an interview on Barstool Sports' "Bussin' With The Boys" podcast, detailing two different transactions in 2013 that he says netted him $33,000.

"We're doing it all sneaky, we don't want to get caught, we're trying to learn from everybody else who's got caught," Manziel said during the interview that was published Thursday by Barstool Sports. "And I may or may not have gone back to this guy's condo and signed probably 10,000 pieces. He gave me three grand."

Manziel said another individual approached him during that autograph-signing session and told him he was getting "ripped off" before offering to connect him with another man who would pay him $30,000.



"So this guy is like, 'All right, go to this room at the Fontainebleau. All this stuff will be in there laid out, and when you're done, just send me a picture of all of it, I'll give you the code to the safe, the money will be in there,'" Manziel said.

The NCAA investigated Manziel before the start of his sophomore season at Texas A&M, but said there was no evidence that the former star quarterback received payment for signing autographs.

"I made somewhat of a decent living in college," said Manziel, who then dared the NCAA to "take my f---ing 9-4 season away and my Chick-fil-A Bowl against Duke."

When asked during the interview what he would say if the NCAA attempted to strip him of his Heisman Trophy, Manziel responded: "I never took a dollar until after I won the Heisman."

ESPN reported in August 2013 that the NCAA was investigating whether Manziel was paid for signing autographs at several locations, including in South Florida around the BCS title game earlier that year. ESPN reported that a set of autograph dealers claimed that Manziel accepted payments to sign more than 4,000 items, including footballs and photographs, at an event in Connecticut in late January 2013.

Manziel was suspended for the first half of Texas A&M's 2013 season opener after the NCAA and school announced he had violated a bylaw prohibiting student-athletes from permitting their names or likenesses to be used for commercial purposes.

But that was the only punishment levied during the 2013 season against Manziel, the flashy dual-threat quarterback who set numerous records in college before flaming out in the NFL.

Manziel, 28, has not played in the NFL since 2015. He appeared briefly this year in the indoor Fan Controlled League, but acknowledged last June that his football career is probably "in the past."
