I think What the show is trying to Say is that Barry is willing to do anything for his little brother Jamal. Like when he shot the man as a kid and said "Now leave him alone". And The fact That Jamal has now given him reason to stay in the country.
He is doing what ever he can for Jamal.
This. When Barry was laying next to his wife, talking about how those kids were willing to die for their brothers, and he was like "what am I gonna do for mine?" As soon as he said that, I knew he was gonna end up staying. Jamal looks happy as hell for it too.

I think he might really be trying to change for the better. But he cant be listening to Barry all the time, he gonna have to do what comes to mind first to deal with the animals in that country, Barry been away to long to give good advice on what they are actually dealing with.
