Netflix: The Punisher official discussion thread UPDATE: HE IS BACK! (Daredevil Reborn)

its a tough role
cause the actor has to have the look and physicality
but also the charisma and presence

the only person that i could see really pulling it off is someone like the Rock and he doesnt check all the boxes phyiscally
The Rock doesn't look anything like Luke Cage.
Henry Simmons might have been able to pull it off but he's already on Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.
For what its worth, I was not bothered by Micheal Coulter as a choice.
There have been a few different incarnations of Luke Cage in the comics. They went with the least popular one for some reason but at least we got one.
It would be cool if all of the Defenders got a cameo on the big screen.

I caught that. I understand that you covered your bases with that statement. I'm not trying to throw you under the bus for it.
I just think that faces are a huge part when it comes to casting a character.
Also, The Rock is way too light-skinned. One of the things I liked about Cage back in the day was that he was unequivocally black, not mixed. I knew if they ever brought it to the big screen, they would have to cast a black man and not sub out. (I'm not on the light vs dark tip, just character accuracy). Alpha male brothas are the scariest thing to those Hollywood types. I'm glad they brought him to screen.
Also, I really enjoyed the dialogue of the 1st season. They seemed to drop the ball a bit in the second but it was my favorite after Daredevil. JJ fizzled out and Iron Fist was never developed properly from the jump.
Also, I could have lived with Frank Grillo being cast as The Punisher but he was already in the MCU.

i agree and thats why i mentioned the physical traits but checks alot of boxes
but it would hypocrytical to harp on the Rock isnt black enough or he is mixed when trolls and racist use the same arguements when black actors are cast in traditional white roles (Ariel in the little Mermaid, Himdell in Thor, etc.)

will be interested to see how they do black adam because based on rellocation he is a pretty humorless character

Dwayne is "black enough" for the role but there were much better choices (IMO) than him for the role of Luke Cage. Plus, honestly, his name is too big for something like that.
He actually looks like Black Adam. I see no problems with that.
I'm not a fan of the race/gender swap in movies just because I see it as provocative marketing and pandering rather than character accuracy but if it doesn't affect the character's story, I'm alright with it. Obviously, you couldn't have a white Black Panther, nor should you have a black Thor. They had to bend the shit out of Captain Marvel's story and practically erase Mar-vell, (who they gender swapped and removed powers) to build that PC shit show of a wack ass movie they pissed out between two of their biggest movies just to force it to sell.
Meanwhile, people won't even use a current Captain Marvel comic book for toilet paper.
Sorry, got off topic.
Back to Punisher. I hope Disney can get that back on track and not send it down the tubes trying to force the sale of Disney Plus or whatever. They probably will, though.

The Punisher Might Be Returning For Season 3 On Hulu

here’ve been plenty of rumblings lately about what the future holds for the title characters of Netlix’s former Marvel properties. Kevin Feige seems keen to have the members of the Defenders as part of the MCU, but it isn’t entirely clear in what capacity. Charlie Cox and Krysten Ritter have been said to be reprising their roles as Daredevil and Jessica Jones, while both Iron Fist and Luke Cage will likely be rebooted entirely.
That leaves the Punisher as the odd one out. Given the definitively R-rated nature of the character, there’s little chance of Frank Castle fitting in with the MCU’s well-established PG-13 template, not unless they want to completely remove the appeal of the military veteran turned vigilante. Star Jon Bernthal has spoken frequently about how close the Punisher is to his heart though, despite the huge number of injuries he suffered during filming, and would no doubt jump at the chance to play him again if given the opportunity.
Recent Deadpool-related rumors have hinted that Marvel could be set to make a venture into R-rated territory, too, with the Punisher also mooted for similarly adult-orientated treatment but now, sources close to We Got This Covered – the same ones who revealed that Charlie Cox was likely returning as Daredevil, which was corroborated by trusted insider Daniel RPK – have informed us that the most likely way for Bernthal to return to our screens as the black-clad merchant of death in the near future will be via Hulu.

Apparently, though the studio also hopes to have him in the MCU movies, there are plans in the works for The Punisher to get a third season on the streaming site as well, which is of course part of Disney’s multimedia empire. While it remains unclear if any other cast members besides Bernthal will return, sending the character to Hulu makes a great deal of sense, as it allows the Mouse House to continue using the fan-favorite comic book hero without sacrificing the more mature and R-rated content that the Punisher requires.
Nothing is set in stone just yet, from what we understand, but our sources have explained that discussions have taken place and they “expect” it to happen at some point in the future. And given that these are also the same sources who told us about the She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel shows before they were announced, and that Ewan McGregor was returning for an Obi-Wan TV series, we have no reason to doubt them.

New Rumor Details Marvel Studios Is Looking To Adapt The Punisher With Jon Bernthal, Possible Title Revealed
Donald Edmonds

July 10, 2020

There were a number of rumors over the July 4th weekend from Mikey Sutton and his Geekosity: All Things Pop Culture Facebook group. One of them involved The Punisher and Marvel Studios’ plans for the character including actor Jon Bernthal possibly reprising his role.
The rumor was first shared to the Perdidos en Hoth YouTube channel.

Sutton would subsequently share a text version to the Facebook group.
Character of the Day: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' Raphael

He detailed, “Because the Punisher is such a violent character, toning him down for Disney+ wouldn’t work; Disney is quite aware of this, and there are no plans for his show to continue on that streaming channel.”
Related: Captain Marvel Was Once Defeated By The Punisher
“There has been chatter about either FX or Hulu for the Punisher to hunt and kill criminals, free from censorship. Regardless of which of the two he ends up, details have begun to emerge on where his future stands,” Sutton continued.

Sutton then revealed that Marvel Studios is looking to bring back Bernthal for this new Punisher show, but that it more than likely won’t be a continuation of the Netflix series.
He wrote, “First of all, Marvel Studios intends to bring back Bernthal; however, it doesn’t mean the new series will follow the continuity of the Netflix program especially when the multiverse can now explain it away. Or it can they will simply not refer to it. “

Sutton then revealed a possible title for this new show, “Secondly, the show could be called Punisher War Journal, just as the ’80s comic book.”
Sutton concludes detailing that Marvel Studios is discussing Charlie Cox reprising his role as Daredevil and cameoing in the show alongside Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.

“Marvel Studios would like other adult-oriented heroes to guest including Daredevil (as with Bernthal, they’d love for Charlie Cox to reprise the role) and Samuel L. Jackson in his foul-mouthed Fury,” he wrapped up the scoop.
The War Journal
Frank Castle a.k.a. The Punisher has had a long history in the Marvel Comics.
He first debuted as a villain to Spider-Man in The Amazing Spider-Man #129 back in 1974. The character quickly became a hit and has had numerous stories told about him.
Many of those stories were documented in two runs of The War Journal. The first run lasted 80 issues. It began in 1988 and lasted until 1995. It featured some of the best comic book talent of all time with Mike Baron, Chuck Dixon, and Carl Potts writing stories.

Potts also provided the artwork in earlier issues. War Journal also introduced a young Jim Lee inking Potts artwork.

When Dixon took on writing for the title, Mark Texeira did the art.

From the looks of it, the series might take more from the first volume of War Journal rather than the second, as the first established a number of Punisher villains and focuses more on Frank Castle’s backstory.
The second volume of War Journal in 2007 spanned a total of 27 issues and ended in January 2009.

Matt Fraction and Rick Remender would write for the series during its limited run.

This second volume sought to include The Punisher in more of the Marvel continuity, tying him in with events happening across the Marvel Universe of comics and allowing for more crossovers.

The Punisher Star Jon Bernthal Reveals if He Would Play Wolverine in the MCU
By JAMIE JIRAK - October 10, 2021 12:03 pm EDT

Back when Disney merged with 20th Century Studios, the first thing on everyone's minds was the inevitable inclusion of the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While no new live-action X-Men films have been announced, it's only a matter of time before the beloved mutants mix into the MCU. Of course, this has led to some speculation about casting, especially when it comes to Wolverine, the character Hugh Jackman played for 17 years. One name that's been thrown around by fans is Jon Bernthal. On one hand, Bernthal is already a Marvel actor, having played The Punisher on Netflix. On the other, there's some debate as to whether or not those shows are canon, and if Chris Evans' turn from Johnny Storm to Captain America has taught us anything, it's that a man can play two Marvel heroes. However, Bernthal recently spoke with Forbes about the Wolverine casting speculation, and it seems he's not too interested in playing any Marvel character other than Frank Castle.

"Look, the criteria in which I sort of decide what I'm doing next is: Does the script move me?, Who am I working with?, Who is the filmmaker, and is that somebody I'm dying to work with? I'm going to hold onto that moving forward no matter what that is," Bernthal said when asked about Wolverine. "I get it, I get that the Marvel questions, you're asking these questions because it's super important to a lot of people; people love these characters and I get that and I come to that with absolute respect. What I will tell you again is that Frank Castle is in my bones. Frank Castle is in my bones."

"Beyond anything, I'm a father and I'm a husband and the kernel of Frank is what would happen if someone took them away from me; something that I understand, something that I empathize with," he added. "And I have a deep, deep reverence for the military community and I have deep respect for the people that this character means so much to. Beyond that, whatever comes my way I'm going to judge it as it comes and I'd be grateful if anything came my way."

As for whether or not Bernthal will be returning as Frank Castle, the actor recently had a discouraging response when asked about a potential Marvel comeback.

"You know, we'll see," Bernthal told ScreenRant while promoting his new indie film Small Engine Repair. "I mean, honestly, I don't think about it very much. I'm really happy -- look, we're all enormously blessed to be doing this. I can say for the other guys that you're talking to as well, we really love this. We really love doing this. We work hard at it, we support our families by it, through it, but we never lose touch just how grateful we are to be in the position that we are that we get to do this for a living. I like to do this. I like to work with people I really respect and love and admire and make stuff with. This kind of project is precisely, it's exactly the kind of stuff I want to be doing. So, whatever else comes, you know, kind of down the road, comes. But, this is something that's really worth celebrating."

Exclusive: Jon Bernthal Back As Punisher, Appearing In Daredevil Reboot

Frank Castle is on his way back. That’s right. Between the Dolph Lundgren lead The Punisher of 1989 and Jon Bernthal’s debut as the vigilante in season 2 of Netflix’s Daredevil, 27 years passed. That’s how long it took for someone to get a live-action adaptation of the character right, and now that version is returning. Our trusted and proven source has informed us that Jon Bernthal is officially on board to return as the Punisher in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While he’ll almost certainly have his own projects in store, we know that Bernthal will be appearing in the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again.

The fact that this news is coming to light now could be indicative of things going on behind the curtain at Disney. Back in November came the rumblings that any chance of Jon Bernthal returning as Punisher was being held up by a high level internal struggle at Disney. One side of that conflict was headed by CEO Bob Chapek who, among other things, wanted to expand the kinds of content available on Disney+ to go beyond what is traditionally considered “family friendly.” On the other side were those who saw such a change as a mistake, as well as those who agreed with Chapek on offering more mature content on the streamer, but felt Chapek was the wrong choice as the leadership for such changes. With, as THR reports, Disney renewing Chapek’s contract and Small Screen claiming the CEO has spent the last few months eliminating all of his competition at Disney, it would seem as if the struggle’s victor has been chosen.

Of course, we’ve already seen some of the changes due to that victory. Coming in time for both the premiere of Moon Knight and the arrival of all of Marvel’s live-action Netflix series on Disney+ — including Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher — came the streamer’s new functions to help parents keep their kids away from more mature content. Since then we’ve seen three of the only commercially successful R-rated superhero movies — Deadpool, Deadpool 2, and Logan — begin streaming on Disney+. Not to mention that one of Marvel’s most recent films, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, proved a breed apart from its predecessors. The sequel is essentially a horror film, with its hero fighting the film’s climactic battle while possessing a desiccated corpse and flying on a cape made from dominated demons. The MCU of today is not the MCU of 2008, and the ways in which it’s changed makes a Punisher return inevitable.

One big question that may be on many fans’ minds is in regards to one of the most visually iconic pieces of the Punisher — his skull logo. At least in part because of ultra-right-wing groups who have adopted the skull logo as their own, Marvel redesigned the image to make it look different from the more recognizable skull. The good news here is that Jon Bernthal hardly ever wore the Punisher logo either on his own series or in his initial appearances in Daredevil, making its absence less of a problem than it could’ve been.

Marvel slick with the reboot titles...Spiderman: Homecoming... Daredevil: Born Again...

When they said 18 episodes I figured all the other Netflix actors would be reintroduced through the Born Again show...

I hoping they get to keep their TV-MA rating...

Big yes to DD and Punisher. Real Marvel production a with higher rating will rock. Bring in The defenders as needs be.

As long as they don't bring back Elodie Yung. My god, she was horrible. If Colter sucked as Luke she was totally unbelievable as Elektra.

Jessica Henwick is fine as Iron Fist, jettison Finn Jones with extreme prejudice. Krysten Ritter is terrific as Jessica Jones.
