Netflix: BlackAF

So I’m watching the first episode....I’m so confused what this is about. Maybe it’s the poor timing but Kenya’s dilemma is that he’s too rich and buys too much shit?

I’m just confused to what this show is actually offering. Just one episode in but Rashida Jones is the only thing worth watching.

I'm in the second episode. It's really dry humor. I don't know.... It's just....i don't know what I'm expecting.

It's alright. Something is off, the kid actors are not that good and Rashida is not convincing. I will still watch it though. I made it to the Juneteenth episode.

I'm on that one now. Got a deep message in this episode.

I fuck with Black-ish, so I decided to watch this show. And it feels like more Black-ish but different humor and without Deon Cole. :dunno:

Still gonna watch the whole season because I'm running out of streaming options. Ozark is the only thing saving me and I'm trying to space out those episodes.

I think the problem I’m having is that I don’t know if I want a show centered around Kenya Burris. Something is off....I’m thinking it’s that.

Yeah... #BlackAF

I didn't love it, BUT I enjoyed it. It's a show created for the middle class and up, don't expect it to pass the this is for the culture, change the game or save black hollywood test.

Like I said before I dont think anyone who isn't into Blackish will like it especially if they stop at the first episode. If it gets a second season, I'd watch.

Even though they had the typical black experience moments, its different from the normal black family shows that attempt to lean toward the perfect family. It didn't come off as overly preachy and the family/parents dysfunction seem to fit the show without going too over the top for the most part.

I've never seen anyone celebrate it or heard of anyone having a party based around it. However, I took it as comparing it to other Holidays. I know more Black people who celebrate Saint Patrick's day.
Fam where you live? Because here in Houston it's like every year, parades, barbecues, etc...

I mean Juneteenth is the day that word reached the south about "freedom" so it would seem down here that we celebrate it a little more than other places...

Houston/other Southern fam, am I wrong?

and I like the show so far... it definitely has moments that are relatable even with Kenya being super rich and not necessarily facing the issues that "common black folk" have.

The plastic bag on his shoes when he pull up to coach the game has me in tears right now

I'm not arguing that it doesn't happen. I'm saying its not made into a big deal from my perspective. I live in the DMV area and visit ATL on and off because of family. Not trying to be disrespectful towards the day and its meaning but I've seen more people mention 420.

To be honest it could also be because people are just not aware of the day being celebrated.

We good man... you saying you from the DMV says it all... it's really a southern thing I'm thinking

But should it be a southern thing? When you think on it this was a major event in US history yet it's not even celebrated by black people on a major scale. It makes more sense for black people to celebrate Juneteenth over Independence Day. I'd go as far as saying it should be a Federal Holiday, but we can barely get jobs/states to recognize MLK day. Not saying we need approva from others to recognize the day, but I do think it should be done more by our people.

In my opinion I'll give the show another point for even driving this conversation. Personally I would not have thought about this issue or thought about why I should celebrate/talking Juneteenth especially with younger relatives.

Man you're spot on.... because just as much as we're talking about it here there is some black family somewhere asking why they don't celebrate Juneteenth... or some hipster white liberal that's putting 2 and 2 together, wondering why if the emancipation proclamation was signed in 1864 is it celebrated almost a full year later...

I think it's definitely going to drive a few conversations

Damn that’s crazy. I know it’s pretty big in Dallas. I never knew that.
