Music Class: Memphis Bleek says ETHER is over-rated

I've always felt the same. Ether had some lines, but it mostly sounded emotional, and some shit was straight corny.

And even with that, it sounded better than anything Nas had out around then, and he sounded awake.

I think people gave it to Nas cuz he was the underdog. He got better after that shit. Good for Nas.

Jay kept on winning in his career though, which is why I can't stand when people claim losing battles ends careers.

Yep.

There were (and still are) a legion of butthurt Nas fans mad that Ether didn't end Jay's career

Hilarious. Here comes that either or shit...If you say so fam, I like both these dudes the same so I don't have an allegiance to one artist. I can't help if I point out the obvious. You getting all defensive as if I was talking about you or something. Damn. lol

Ether was 100% factual that is why jay was butt hurt on the radio

And the people voted nas won period...

I see u niggas ain't mentioning that stillmatic freestyle

Take was on some Nigga my killing you, ether was on some Homie why you killing me? and time backed Jay up.

You have to understand that most of these kats are not residents of the tri-state area. They wouldn't understand. There are far too many emotional stans.

At the time, this beef was about the title for the king of NY. Both songs were played live on hot97 and the tri-state area voted Nas as king.

It threw Jay-Z esteem off some. He never expected the folks that really matter (NYC and surrounding areas) at the time would have picked Nas

defensive about what exactly:confused:

um what are u talking about, u and all jay fans bring up careers once ya realize lyrics an jay cryin gets posted and like its been said on here many times before only bitches an fags care about how much money they have

playhatian is a jay fan and i bet if ya search ether threads on here all them shits in the last couple years were made by jay fans tryin to re-write history

why? the shit happened like a decade ago?
jay lost the battle, move on
jay got some weird fans:smh:

Exactly that why any nigga in this thread not from NY their opinion don't mean shit that's why they should be dismissed

There you go with that either or shit again

First of all I don't know nothing about Playahatian or his posts so don't lump me into that category with him.

You strike me as a dude who took sides. I'm not from New York so I wasn't taking sides like I had to be a fan of one and not be a fan of the other. I'm a fan of both as well as Mobb Deep at the time.

If you read my first two post in this thread I acknowledged that Nas won the battle. You ain't got no argument from me Thats a fact. I also remember there was a lot of Nas fans (dudes who were taking sides on the internet and radio) predicting Jay would never come back after that and his career is over. Thats a fact too.

Why I can't point out that shit turned out to be a wrong without you getting upset is beyond me

Maybe I shouldn't have used the term "butt hurt" then you'd probably wouldn't had taken it personal? But I digress.

Im a Jay-z fan, real talk, but if you take takeover to ether, Ether was a better diss, period. I remember cats when I was in college telling me" its a wrap for your boy, Jay, Ether finished him, and Im not going to Lie, I was like , fuck!! I dont know how jay could counter. Then I heard "Superugly. Jokes and witty punchlines are one thing, and Nas shit was crazy plus that beat was insane for ether!!! But Jay was speaking facts, Nas was fucking hurt by that, fuck the bullshit, Great albums came from these two songs takeover and ether, but sadly enough, never see great rappers going at each other and seeing the best anymore.

Tell Bleek to build his catalog of music and albums and have some of which are of critical acclaim or considered classics. Oops too late!!! Who Tha Fuck is a damn Memphis Bleek?!?! GTFOH!!

Exactly that why any nigga in this thread not from NY their opinion don't mean shit that's why they should be dismissed

I think the non new yorkers should be better judges considering just like most people I know never saw this beef as a big deal and we are going solely by listening to the songs instead of going by our favorite rapper. I bet you my bottom dollar nas was on the phone screaming at his baby momma with tears in his eyes after listening to super ugly

yeah sure, keep on tryin to rewrite the past
i'd say let it go but u jay fans dont give up an this is funny so
see u in 6 months:lol:

i'm startin to think beatdown is correct

i haven't read every post in this thread but my take on this shit is nas fan base in america is mainly in new york, even tho he's renown as 1 of the best ever his fan base is not as big and diverse as jayz so it makes sense that most ppl outside of ny would think takeover was better than ether, ppl who say takeover was better are either hardcore jayz stans or non hip hop heads, also i think non new yorkers don't take into account the way nas came back wit ether, jay threw the first jab and it was like what you gonna do nas, then bam he hit him wit a knockout punch

Honestly, I think what caught people off guard was that I don't think people thought Nas had THAT in him.

Dude was always very lyrical, but not a battle rapper.

Dude damn sure shocked the hell out of me.

I guess it only makes sense that someone that talented could channel that talent into a hard-hitting diss track too.

Nas obviously won the battle by popular opinion, but still just fucking opinion. Popular opinion would also have Eminem as being the best rapper ever, so fuck popular opinion. Ether was cornier than Jay's shit and I always preferred Jay in the battle.... I was disappointed that he caved to NY fans and gave Nas the W.

 gave Nas the win? That nigga lost and was stating the obvious.

Again... Opinions are like assholes!

For me killing a nigga wit facts is always better that school yard disssing.
A nigga can go hard wit disses and being funny, but when that same nigga get hit wit truth... Done!

Ha Ha... Very Funny Motherfucka! But lets not forget:

You scribbled in your notepad and created your life

I showed you your first tec on tour with Large Professor
Then I heard your album bout your tec on your dresser
So yeah I sampled your voice, you was usin' it wrong
You made it a hot line, I made it a hot song
And you ain't get a corn nigga you was gettin' fucked then
I know who I paid God, Serchlite Publishing

BTW... I fuck'd ya baby moms in your car!
:boxing:

you and a good number of non New Yorkers don't know shit about back packers moving from cipher to cipher... or battling in the park or on the corner... to a lot of y'all -rappers beefing means one clik's goons getting at a rival's goons backstage or in the streets or subliminal dis tracks accompanied by clapping off gunshots.

J vs Nas was never going any further than wax... This was an MC battle in NYC. The winner should be the MC that demonstrates greater lyrical skill and /or wit.

To those of us that were HERE to witness it, J got hurt badly... showed his feelings and was speechless and weeping all over phone to Angie - THEN rushed a response to Hot97 in 2 days!

Notice the similarities between SuperUgly and last year's Open Letter... especially since both were rushed to radio less than 24 hours of being mixed and mastered

damn my ears wee burning...

full disclosure I AM a Jay fan

and a Nas fan.

I am from a generation when you had the mental capacity to like/admire more then one artist at a time. Not like now.

I think Jay won the battle...lyrically as a whole and if you want to go to career stats, he won that too.

But on a STREET level...barbershop corner store level.

Yeah Nas won....mostly because all the NAS fans thought he had fallen off and were happy he came back so hard.

But honestly lyrically production wise Takeover is a BETTER song in my opinion.

And incredibly career wise benefited BOTH.

But I just don't understand how its compared to say a 50 Cent and Ja Rule Battle where THAT battle in my opinion was epic on and off wax. And had a MUCH more definitive result although unexpected at the time.

Takeover's Hardest disses towards Nas were Lies and Fabrications too, No?

1 Hot album every ten year average?

Two of his albums got 4.5 mics or higher (Illmatic and I Am...) and his Best album IMO was It was Written (4 mics)....

3 out of 4 was hot...

Showed him his 1st Tech? Lies.

Takeover as a Diss to Mobb Deep was Great.... the diss to Nas, Not so much...

Ether >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Takeover

Now lets talk about Supaugly....

Supaugly: Nas sneaking out of the Source sound Lab, the stabs at him fucking his baby's mother and putting condoms on the baby seat..

this is why I think Supaugly was better... If Jay would have said what he said on Supaugly as the very last verse of Takeover, Takeover would have been a better song.

SUPAUGLY is 1 of my favorite diss Tracks....

And as for that video, Bleek just riding for his Dude... the fuck u niggas think.

sorry brother.. i don't know NAS Life to say he literally showed him his FIRST tech.
But i can tell you for a FACT.. that JAY did in FACT have that tech under the bed while we were on TOUR in DC.
And when one of them cats I think from Main Source got into some beef.. it was JAY with that thing that kept niggas from being all over that tour bus.

This is what i remember.. cause the mf'er showed ME my first tech. LOL..

I never forget my reaction to hearing that line .. I damn near choked on my water cause I was like.. WOW he went THERE.

It's all a matter of opinion who's better than who.. I favor Bleeks point of view.

This the shit I hate....so I'm either a Jay stan or non hiphop head....man FOH

Most are judging the song alone, not its impact on other fans or the artist.

see u in 6 months:lol:

Look here cuz.
I ain't got no problem with you.
What I couldn't seem to wrap my mind around is you stated a fact and tell me to move on and then when I stated an obvious fact and you took me to war :gun03:

And stop with all this us vs them shit. I can't be a fan of both? :smh:

Godson? what this nikka thinking he Jesus got a cross on his arm but he talking bout Allah are you muslim or christian I forgot you think you God

QB on his chain please give it back to lil kim

you know whats funny im a big Nas fan and always thought Ether was the winner but for some reason after reading the lyrics to both songs

I think Jay might have had the better lines and the fact he was addressing multiple people took away from the song. If he had a whole song just going at Nas it probably would have been a problem.

I know there was Super Ugly but lets be honest that was just Jay being pissed off he didnt spit his best bars on that IMO

but either way it goes this battle will stay in the barber shop for yrs to come. This will forever be debated

Yep, I agree. Funny thing is I remember pissed off hard core Jay fans flooding message boards saying that Super Ugly was THE Answer to Ether :smh: I was embarrassed for the dude honestly.

I never got how Jay showing him a Tech such a diss. And how are people that don't know either of these cats so sure about what's fact and what's fiction?

Wondering why this line hasn't come up in this debate..... When I heard it I was like wait a sec....

“Old cribs I sold, yall drive by like monuments/Google Earth Nas, I got flats in other continents/Worst enemies want to be my best friends/Best friends want to be enemies, like that’s what’s in/But I don’t give a fuck walk inside the lion’s den”

To me this is one of the best rivalries in hip hop. Can debate both sides. This and the Beans / Jada Lox situation.

Ether was the best Diss Record from either of the two Mc's going @ each other.

Point blank period.

Several years ago, Bleek was talking about how Nas killed Jay on Ether... but I guess now dudes not trying to stray away from Jay no more...

Ether became a household name after Nas Dropped the Ether on Jay...

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Ether >>>

And that's with even saying that The Takeover was also under-rated.

The reply was so quick and furious that all you could do was
Plus Superugly was kind of lame.. was a huge let-down.

The reality is that it should have never been a real debate on this but Ether showed who was the better lyricist...Nas has always been the better lyricist and Ether was flame all over Jay Z.... you could tell he was butt-hurt over that shit.....he didn't expect that type of response.
