Chapter 4: A Wink Gone Wrong

Jonathan lay there, prone, cheek pressed flat against the asphalt, his mouth filling with the metallic taste of pennies. As his mind re-booted, recovering from the sudden stun, he now began connecting dots, running through all the possible reasons as to why someone should want to assail him in the parking lot of a Publix -- but there were just too many recent developments to draw a reasonable conclusion. Then Jonathan saw a woman with wildly overdone Smokey Eyes eyeshadow standing behind his assailant. “Oh, her,” he thought. “This is all a misunderstanding.” And, sure enough, it was. The events leading up to present, Jonathan sucker punched in a grocery store parking lot -- his reusable shopping bag on its side, the chocolate cake he had been instructed to pickup from the Bakery skittered across the pavement in its plastic shell, the SpongeBob depicted in colorful frosting now warped and grotesquely skewed -- could be traced back to a simple, harmless, miscommunicated facial gesture. A fact that Jonathan tried to articulate as he pushed himself off ground, “This is all a misund--” But this factual basis for a resolution went unheard or unheeded as Jonathan took another blow, slumping back down to the parking lot pavement. “You been sweatin’ my lady,” he heard the man say as he saw work boots approach. Shit. Steel-toed. “Can you... just... wait a second?” Jonathan said, pushing himself up again. Jonathan looked up at the man. Took in his burly, sunburned arms. His eyes unreadable, but intent unmistakeable, behind mirrored Oakley sunglasses. Then again at the tattered steel-toed boots. The story his appearance told was that of a guy who worked outside, a guy who worked with his hands. Meaty damn hands. Jonathan peered around the man, looking to the woman standing behind him -- her crossed arms and expression saying: GET IT OVER WITH ALREADY. Jonathan wondered if she was not entirely pleased that her honor was being defended in this way, if her impatience hinted at an underlying feminism: don’t use your insecurity as a justification for male violence; I am not an object to be fought over. Or, was she just bored with the proceedings thus far -- a jealous beatdown a commonplace occurrence in their household? In either case, Jonathan could see that she would be no help in intervening. What a tragic turn -- that all Jonathan had done to get out of his unfortunate situation since getting embroiled in this beach towel business -- that it all might be undone by an unrelated incident. By what was intended to be received as a well-meaning (and not at all sexually charged) wink. A wink gone wrong. That wink was a timebomb. And now it was going off, right at the most inopportune time, such as it would. Knowing that this misunderstanding might interfere with Jonathan’s time-table, knowing that he had to get that SpongeBob cake to Simon, and if he missed the deadline... well, that would be not good at all. So, Jonathan knew he would have to get himself out of this mess, too. Somehow. Now, while Jonathan’s mind races to find a solution, let’s pause the forward progress of our narrative to fill you in on what happened -- What happened was this: The woman with the over-the-top Smokey Eyes eyeshadow was a waitress at a diner on Las Olas Boulevard, just off the boardwalk. And not the day before we met Jonathan in Chapter 1, the very day before his life was turned flip-upside-down on the beach, Jonathan dined at that diner. Sure, he chatted up the waitress -- as was his wont; we know by now that Jonathan is a loquacious and affable charmer

“Trout did another thing which some people might have considered eccentric: he called mirrors leaks. It amused him to pretend that mirrors were holes between two universes.

If he saw a child near a mirror, he might wag his finger at a child warningly, and say with great solemnity, "Don't get too near that leak. You wouldent want to wind up in the other universe, would you?"

Sometimes somebody would say in his presence, "Excuse me, I have to take a leak." This was a way of saying that the speaker intended to drain liquid wastes from his body through a valve in his lower abdomen.

And trout would reply waggishly, "where I come from, that means you're about to steal a mirror." And so on.”

love the writing...

when Elliot breaks down the fat guy in the hallway and then the Evil Corp guy basically does the same thing to the waiter...showing you they are are EXACTLY the same person? just good and evil versions. And those monologues were ill and I'm sure hit home with many in the audience.

Ok I'm surprised that THIS episode made people think Mr. Robot is real.

the whole inner ear com was an excellent way to show that Mr. Robot literally IS a voice in his head. You saw he knew all of his emotional and physical reactions BEFORE they happened?

And I'm sure the scene back in the arcade where the pierced chick seemed like she was interacting with Mr. Robot got a lot of people

but look at HER sight lines and the camera close ups to her face and you can see she is either looking off at Elliot or Mr. Robot is directly IN FRONT of Elliot.

He always WAITS his turn to talk in between dialogue and conversations.

And that Evil Corp guy is becoming my favorite character when he walked into the bathroom and the wife went from pissed to offended to scared to curious to opening her legs was a great scene...

I like how he speaks an uncommon foreign language, his 'pregnant' wife drinks WINE and he is kinda stiff and awkward (exactly like Elliot) and it takes so much effort for him to act human...he even says himself that he isn't...

like a ROBOT!

and btw...

no one notices that his name is Elliot and he dresses like a grown version of the kid from ET, has BIG eyes...and acts like an alien?

If he rides a bicycle with a basket in the front I'm out.

I called this way early

Amanda Seyfried to play Elizabeth Holmes in Hulu series, replacing Kate McKinnon

The Mank actress sets her first new role since scoring that recent Oscar nomination.

Elizabeth Holmes is getting a new face. A month after Kate McKinnon dropped out of The Dropout, Hulu's upcoming series about the alleged fraudster behind Silicon Valley's Theranos, EW has confirmed that Amanda Seyfried is taking over the role.

The Dropout will be a drama series based on the ABC News podcast of the same name. It's set to trace how Holmes raised hundreds of millions of dollars to found her biotech startup Theranos and became a media darling (thanks in part to her Steve Jobs-like black turtleneck and affected baritone voice) while hiding the fact that her firm's technology didn't actually work. Theranos promised a miracle — that any and all blood tests could be done with a single drop of blood — and never delivered.

Elizabeth Meriwether (New Girl) will serve as showrunner and executive producer on The Dropout, and Seyfried will also be a producer.

This is the first role Seyfried has set since earning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for playing Old Hollywood actress Marion Davies in Mank. Speaking with EW for The Awardist podcast ahead of her nomination, Seyfried said she hoped the role would lead to more exciting opportunities: "Working with such a master like David Fincher is going to, hopefully, open the door [for me] to working with people of his caliber."

Is Rami Malek okay? The award-winning lip sync artist just takes everything so seriously, whether it’s his commitment to the Mandarin Oriental or making sure that there is no photographic proof that he was ever friends with Rachel Bilson as a teenager. Bilson revealed the latter on an episode of Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard, telling him that in 2019, she shared a high school photo of herself and Malek to support him during his Oscar campaigning for Bohemian Rhapsody, because they were “good friends” in high school: “I had posted a throwback of us from our senior trip to New York, Broadway. We were super-nerdy, just the dorkiest picture of both of us. But I throw it up ‘cause it’s funny, and I think it’s so important to be able to make fun of yourself. And he had a gold chain, and I’m like, ‘Rami where’d you get the gold chain?’ Whatever. So I’m just being funny, we were good friends.”

Bilson says that she then checked her Instagram DMs, “and I had a message from Rami. But it wasn’t like, ‘Hey! How are you?’ It was straight to, ‘I would really appreciate it if you take that down, I’m a really private person.’” Bilson was taken aback, but she adds that she’s friends with Malek’s stylist, and she said that it wasn’t “a great picture of him.” But what high school picture is, for anyone? The O.C. creator Josh Schwartz even told Bilson, “you did him dirty, he’s about to be nominated,” to which she said, “What do you mean? This was my friend, it’s a funny picture. I guess I should have found something more flattering? I don’t know. But I removed it, and I even wrote to him a really nice message, like, ‘I’m so sorry, go get the Oscar, you’re doing amazing.’ And I never hear anything back.” Wild how the guy who made this could be so self-serious.

O.C. alum Rachel Bilson says her friendship with Rami Malek is fine after a recent disagreement over an throwback photo she posted on Instagram.
"Rami and I actually have talked since that came out. He connected with me, and we're all good. He, you know, was so sweet and we're totally fine now," Bilson said on the Ladygang podcast Monday. "And we talked about it and we're good. He was so gracious. And I totally understood where he was coming from, and he understood me. And I was just so happy we were able to squash it and, like, move on."

Rami Malek and Rachel Bilson went to high school together.

When Bilson first shared the adorable high school photo of her friend and Mr. Robot star, fans shared her excitement over seeing the two actors hanging out in New York as teens. But that excitement ended up being short-lived, as Bilson said Malek messaged her asking her to take the photo down. She was a little disappointed, but as a good friend, she agreed.

Bilson said that when the press went wild with headlines after she talked about the photo sharing mishap and Malek's response on Dax Shepard's podcast The Armchair Network, she immediately regretted putting her words into the world.

"My friend sent me a CNN link to it. I was like, 'Are you kidding me?' I was so mortified though," Bilson said. "Like, I was having a panic attack. I had to go to therapy that day, and I was like, 'I am having anxiety. I did not want this to resurface in this way. I feel so bad. Oh my god. Rami is going to think I'm doing this again.'"

As it turns out, there was some good that came out of the whole thing — the two were able to reconnect and now, according to Bilson, "Everything is great."
