This was meh

Somewhere inside it's a good movie. It needed to be done by someone to take more risk. Seemed like they didn't want to go full satire. I would go and out between being entertained and being bored. You already offended the whites by the title and trailer, why pacify them with the movie?

It tuned into a love story for appeasement and lighten the tone.

Justice did impress me with his acting at times.

And the ending was like they cut something out to keep it at an hour and 30. Which is weird, because at one point they emphasis his knitting and I was like wtf. Out of the stuff you edit out, you leave these 10 seconds in?

They do a lot of black movies like this. They take a good premise or possibility and then they waste it with lazy writing, poor editing, and an "All right, that's it" ending. Or they reach back like Tyson about to throw a punch and have you thinking like, "Oh shit..." and it lands like a grape.

X-Men: First Class
2011

7.5/10

I got home tonight and watched this one with my sons on Disney+.

If you have seen these movies, you should remember that they were all over the place in telling the stories. There is a Wolverine flick that came out before this one. When I started watching these flicks with my sons, I debated amongst myself whether to watch them in theatrical release order or chronological order. Being the stories/continuity makes no sense regardless on how you watch it, I decided to watch them by theatrical release, mainly cuz my sons watch these films for entertainment and have no clue on the X-Men’s actual history from the comics. I also decided to skip the Wolverine films and watch them separately back to back.

This film technically was supposed to be a reboot of the franchise. The film has the movie origin of Xavier meeting Magneto in 1962. Xavier was a party laid back character and Magneto was already in the “Fuck Humans” mindset.

We see the origin of the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants.

The main villains are Sebastian Shaw and the Hellfire Club.

The main plot revolves around the Cuban Missile Crisis. The story plays out smoothly and there is more action than the last film. They actually make fun of the last film.

VFX/SFX looks great and holds up today.

Synopsis

In the early 1960s, during the height of the Cold War, a mutant named Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) meets a fellow mutant named Erik Lehnsherr (Michael Fassbender). Despite their vastly different backgrounds -- Charles grew up with a wealthy family, while Erik lost his parents at Auschwitz -- the two become close friends. As the world teeters on the brink of a nuclear war, Charles and Erik with other mutants join forces to save humanity. However, a situation soon tears the friends apart.

The Great St. Louis Bank Robbery
1959

6/10

I stumbled on this on while looking for something unrelated and watched it last night.

It’s a film based on actual events in St. Louis. It’s a somewhat slow burn film for the 1st hour but picks up slowly after going into the robbery.

The first hour introduces the crew and we get a brief view of their individual personalities. The first hour also goes into the planning and rehearsal of the robbery which is unique for a heist film.

The part of the film leading into the robbery almost could be a prequel to the cult classic “Reservoir Dogs” with how it plays out and how that film starts.

Overall, it’s an interesting and entertaining film. tubi has a unremastered grainy copy, it adds to the griminess of the film. Sound is not great either.

Synopsis

Career criminals (David Clarke, Craham Denton) and a local youth (Steve McQueen) carefully plan and rehearse the robbery of a Missouri bank.

Origin

True Connections

PRAISE: Ava DuVernay’s Origin may be her most effective and memorable movie yet. The story based on Isabel Wilkerson's landmark book to frame the conversation about segregation and inequality on a global scale and the raw emotion coupled with it.
The movie is effective with a capital E the performances from the cast are so true and down to Earth so praise to the cast including: Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Jon Bernthal, Niecy Nash-Betts, Emily Yancy, Blair Underwood and Vera Farmiga.
The movie truly displays how love and friendship can defy any hurdles the pain and power of racism may have.
The visuals are soul stirring and then some. Some are very triggering. When the film turns to Allison and Elizabeth Davis, Black anthropologists who saw first-hand the book burning in Nazi Germany and White anthropologists Burleigh and Mary Gardner and their brave and then some undercover work it was an eye opening revelation to me and I definitely want to read their book Deep South. The film reveals how some connections were for the good in the research of racism and how some studies and connections were sinister.
The film is so many things, part family drama and lecture with a bit of a documentary vibe blended in and it really works for the most part.

PROBLEMS: I would have liked to have spent more time with certain characters that inhabit the film instead of long dwelling shots of humiliation. Some parts of the movie are to on the nose and blatant.

Scale of 1 to 10 an 8½

Love Lies Bleeding

Boundless Love !!!!

PRAISE: Yes its a love story....a crazy, tension filled, blood soaked one !!
The story Lou is a reclusive gym manager who falls hard for Jackie, an ambitious bodybuilder who's heading to Las Vegas to pursue her dream....that slowly turns into a nightmare. Director and writer Rose Glass and co writer Weronika Tofilska put together a story with all of the small town connections and grit of a nineties thriller that has an enthusiastic and then some cast including : Kristen Stewart, Katy O’Brian who is a revelation even though i know her from The Mandalorian, Anna Baryshnikov, Jena Malone Ed Harris, and Dave Franco. The passion and love at first sight between the main characters is very believable as the story lays out tension and ties to pasts that are filled with sinister doings but also couple with dreams of wanting more in life and wanting to escape from certain paths in life. The violence in the movie is definitely not for the faint of heart and some visuals are very shocking. Speaking of visuals there are some that are really well done and trippy. The film gets so many things right as the characters find themselves painted into corners, even when some of their hearts are in the right place it has shocking outcomes. There is a great running gag about trying to quit a vice.

PROBLEMS: Thinking back on a nod to an animated classic in the movie, I should have seen a unintentionally funny visual coming. It happens late in the film but it's so crazy it did take me out of the film. I'm really curious to how other people will have a just go with it feeling about it or did it disrupt all of the great things the movie has going for it.

Scale of 1 to 10 an 8
Thanks for the review, really looking forward to seeing these two flicks

The Night They Knocked
2019

4/10

I watched this one this evening on tubi.

It’s a home invasion flick, tubi has a ton of them, the preview for this one struck my interest.

The film is a take off of “The Strangers” with Insane Clown Posse as the killers.

Whoever put this out did their homework when it comes to suspense, the film has a good amount of it and it’s presented well.

Also, the movie follows the “Less Is More” when it comes to showing violence which makes the film interesting.

There is a Brotha who co-stars, he will piss you off furiously with his behavior. His character is a copy of “Tyrell”

The first 40 minutes tries to do character development, but it falls flat.

The film ends with the viewer having their own interpretation of the ending along with leaving it off for potential sequels.

For the Militants, there is a IR BM/WW couple, nothing is shown between them.

Synopsis

A group of friends staying at a mountain house have their fun suddenly interrupted by a knock at the door.

It’s Women’s History Month, gotta watch films with Pussy in the starring roles. I watched this one this evening on the road.

It’s a Hood Thriller based around the OnlyFans website.

If you remember the film “The Players Club” and the character “Myron”, this movie revolves around the Myron character.

There isn’t anything for sex or nudity. The 3 main female characters are attractive, the actress who plays Amber is the best with her big natural boobs. She has an outdoor scene running with a sports bra and her boobs almost pop out. There is a Black woman in the club with a big booty for a quick shot of her twerking.

The actors in this film couldn’t act their way across the street, so don’t go expecting Shakespeare with this flick. There is a quick scene with the fault code from the camera popping up, it’s pure comedy that nobody thought to reshoot the scene at that time or later in editing.

It’s a entertaining film, that’s about it.

I couldn’t find a trailer for this movie.

Wu: The Story of the Wu-Tang Clan
2008

7.5/10

I watched this one this evening on the road.

The documentary mainly covers the years 1991 to the mid 2000s when the group reunited.

It covers how they were able to sell themselves to the labels, get individual record deals, the issues with Ol’ Dirty Bastards legal problems and the fallout.

What’s interesting is if you watched the Hulu series, this film gives you the real people behind the scenes that you saw in the series.

It’s a good in/depth documentary for the time period it covers.

Synopsis

In 1993 a group of musicians form Wu-Tang Clan and take the hip-hop world by storm.

Wild Style
1983

8/10

I watched this last night on the road on tubi.

The last time I saw this flick was on a grainy bootleg VHS tape back in the 1980s.

I been meaning to watch it over the decades on a good DVD, just never got around to it.

This is the first Hip Hop film that came out that accurately portrayed the music, graffiti, fashion and everything else related to the culture that started in NYC.

The film used legendary Graf Artists in the film. Lee is the main star. Lady Pink also co-stars.

The film is full of legendary rappers/groups like The Cold Crush Brothers and the Fantastic Five. Rock Steady Crew does a set with breakdancing along with Grandmaster Flash doing a set on turntables.

Busy Bee does a live show in the film. There is some street freestyle done. There is also a large number of cameos thru-out the film.

It was filmed in NYC in Manhattan/Bronx during the era when NYC was at its grimest.

If you love Hip Hop and everything about it, this is a must see film. I plan on getting a Blu-Ray of it if it’s out there.

tubi has a clean version and it’s on other free streaming services.

The Killing
1956

8/10

I watched this one this afternoon at home on tubi.

This is a Stanley Kubrick film, if you are familiar with him then you know he never put out garbage.

The film is a heist thriller dealing with regular men with no criminal history planning and executing a heist at a local horse track.

It starts out immediately with the planning of the heist, there really isn’t much for character development, what is shown is short and straight to the point.

Stanley did a good job of keeping the film at a good pace for the first hour during the planning. Later when the execution comes, the suspense level is high until the final scene.

The gold digger wife will definitely piss you off when she is introduced, just bear with her and let her story play out.

Their is a scene where the word “******” is used by a White Man towards a Black man, when it happens you won’t be upset cuz of the Black man’s behavior towards the White man. The scene ends comical. Kubrick did a good job handling racism for that era.

I’m not gonna go into the film to not spoil it, but it has to have in my opinion the best ending to a heist film that I have seen.

tubi has clean copy of the film.

Synopsis

Career criminal Johnny Clay (Sterling Hayden) recruits a sharpshooter (Timothy Carey), a crooked police officer (Ted de Corsia), a bartender (Joe Sawyer) and a betting teller named George (Elisha Cook Jr.), among others, for one last job before he goes straight and marries his fiancee, Fay (Coleen Gray). But when George tells his restless wife, Sherry (Marie Windsor), about the scheme to steal millions from the racetrack where he works, she hatches a plot of her own.

Past Lives

Common Connections

PRAISE: I think a lot of people have been down the paths the characters in this movie go down and that's one of the reasons it's so good. The story is about Nora and Hae Sung, two deeply connected childhood friends, are wrest apart after Nora's family emigrates from South Korea. Decades later, they are reunited. I thought the three leads were great.Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, and Arthur John Magaro perfectly capture the emotions of a what could have been couple and a married couple. Director Celine Song knows how to capture the awkwardness of everything that happens in this movie. It's in the uncomfortable silences, the meet ups and a true third wheel moment. The connection of calling talking everyday but it's still not enough which leads to the long distance longing and the long distance why bother. Also well brought out is how life moves forward even though the love and care is there the realism of a person evolving and becoming a part of another country and even another person happens !!

PROBLEMS: The movie is dry and meanders here and there definitely should have better pacing

Scale of 1 to 10 an 8½

They should rename this movie a Simp Story.

The husband had already made his mind up that he was going to be a cuck

X-Men: Days of Future Past
2014

7.5/10

I watched this one tonight with my sons on MAX.

This film mainly was to connect the first three film staring Patrick Steward/Ian McKellan with the reboot films with younger actors.

It starts out with the Mutant War kicked off in full gear in 2023. The war is just not taking out Mutants but humans who carry the X-Gene and could give birth to Mutants.

Wolverine volunteers for the task to go back to 1973 to stop an assassination and convince Xavier/Magneto for assistance.

Sentinels are introduced in both timelines along with new X-Men characters.

This film has a good mix of action/drama that balances out well. VFX/SFX looks way better than earlier projects.

Gonna get dinner and we will eat while watching the next film in the franchise.

Synopsis

Convinced that mutants pose a threat to humanity, Dr. Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage) develops the Sentinels, enormous robotic weapons that can detect a mutant gene and zero in on that person. In the 21st century, the Sentinels have evolved into highly efficient killing machines. With mutants now facing extinction, Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) volunteers to go back in time and rally the X-Men of the past to help change a pivotal moment in history and thereby save their future.

X-Men: Apocalypse
2016

6.5/10

We watched this tonight on Disney+ after the last film we saw earlier.

The films main villain is Apocalypse. This is a character I’m not familiar with cuz he debuted in the comics after I stopped reading them in the early 90s. So I basically went into this film blind and watched it for what it is. I had missed out seeing it in theaters and later saw it on HBO. The character officially debuted in the after credits of the last X-Men film I reviewed.

The film starts out in ancient Egypt with Apocalypse going thru his routine of preservation. The procedure gets disrupted and he is entombed. From there the film jumps to 1983 to continue the story. The movie gives us the movie origin of Cyclops along with showing a younger Jean Grey, Nightcrawler and Storm.

Magneto has gone into hiding and has a wife/kid. The kid we find out is a mutant. Magneto soon after allies with Apocalypse after being shown the true strength of his power. Apocalypse as part of the main story wants Xavier’s body for his plans which carries the film to the end.

With what they did with Apocalypse, I will assume it worked well for the film. I know the comics went more in-depth with his character, but what they did in this film was ok.

VFX/SFX looked it. Action/Thrills was not as impressive as it could have been for this story.

Synopsis

Worshiped as a god since the dawn of civilization, the immortal Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) becomes the first and most powerful mutant. Awakening after thousands of years, he recruits the disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and other mutants to create a new world order. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Professor X (James McAvoy) and Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) lead a team of young X-Men to stop their seemingly invincible nemesis from destroying mankind.

See, movies like this have so much potential for a good story, I'll be with D- level acting, if they just put significant creativity into making it work. This was off the top of my head

Three young ladies decide to become cam girls after getting fired from their job. Things start looking up and they start attracting tons of guys, with several returning main customers.

The girls often play together in soft petting and tongue kissing scenes together being as they are friends, and that's what the guys like. They notice that their main customers have stopped contributing, the ones who were the most active, and who gave the most money.

Come to find out, several of their main customers have been killed

A police detective interviews with the women believing they have something to do with the murders, but in the end it is a guy who is determined to be their only fan and has been going around the country killing guys who give the most to his favorite girls- his girls.

That's how I would have done it
