I haven't seen Raging Bull. I don't know why. Maybe it's the fact that it was filmed in black and white didn't appeal to me growing up. I'll try to see if I can't find it

**checked **

It's on HBO MAX. I'll check it out sometime soon. I appreciate the slight nudge.

I appreciate the art of movies and acting so I will give a shot. I see that taxi driver, another movie I haven't seen is also on HBO Max
Both are worth watching if you haven't done so. Let me know what you think of Raging Bull. The Black and white is soon forgotten once you get into the story.

It's worth seeing, G'.

Watched it a number of years back.

Sign of a good movie and acting performances ... everyone watching enjoyed it. Dad, me, his then-gf, her 20-something daughter, grandson, my brother, etc.

If you enjoy her acting, and I do to some extent, there's something about her looks and voice I find appealing, then she delivers. Nothing special of course because she doesn't have much range but she meets expectations.

Agreed. She's been building up her resume / filmography in recent years. She's very effective at what she does.

Your favorite role of hers? I liked her most in The Survivalist. I first noticed her in A Cure for Wellness though and thought she was a bit younger than she was.

I need to go back and watch The Survivalist in full. I only saw a portion of it.

Haven't seen A Cure for Wellness, but I remember the trailer.

She was solid in both X and Pearl. The latter allowed her to show off her acting chops quite a bit. Even something as simple as facial acting (during the end credits). Even that worked creepily well.

I saw X and enjoyed it for what it was -- a homage to 70s slasher movies particularly The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. I haven't seen Pearl yet. I'll get around to it

If you go over her work, it wouldn't be inaccurate to consider her a Gen Z scream queen. She seems to have an affinity for horror.

Agreed. I enjoyed X more overall, but Pearl had to rely primarily on her to carry the entire thing.

Cool to see her affinity for horror, as you noted. Good to see Jenna Ortega getting some of that "scream queen" shine as well in recent years. I need to finish off the last few episodes of Wednesday (series) yet. Got a kick out of watching her sarcastic, deadpan delivery on that show.

X was the first I'd seen of Jenna Ortega. I'm familiar with her now but still haven't seen any of her work besides X. Anything youd recommend from her?

I think I first saw her in Insidiious - Chapter 2. She also got some buzz in the 2021 Scream movie (haven't seen that one). Enjoyed her work in season 2 of You (believe that was around 2019 or 2020). Really happy for her starring role in Wednesday ... as she's garnered an international audience with that show, and will have more big projects available to her in the years ahead.

This flick is a cult classic. I just watched it with my two sons on tubi.

It deals with countries using giant robots to settle wars. The premise is nothing new and the film plays out in a predictable manner.

The VFX/SFX with the robots is done with stop-motion animation and models. They do look cheesy but they also look pretty good. In my opinion this style of animation should be used for the current Transformer movies. With the way tech has improved since this film’s release, it could be done well.

The film is also popular with US Army vets cuz of the Army patches worn on a couple of characters sleeves.

For the Thirsty, Anne-Marie Johnson co-stars, she is well known for playing Raj’s wife from “What’s Happening Now” and “In The Heat of the Night”. She is in her prime in this flick, no nudity or sexy clothing worn.

One of the best unintentional comedy scenes of the film is the “Robot Chainsaw”, when you see it, you will bust out laughing.

tubi looks to have the remastered Blu-Ray edition. If you got kids under the age of 10, they will enjoy it.

Synopsis

In the distant future, mankind has forsaken global wars for battles of single combat. The world has been divided into two opposing super powers, with each side represented by trained champions. Their weapons are huge robotic machines, capable of battle on land, sea and in the air.

I was worried all the good stuff would be in the trailer, nope

Still an entertaining movie that knows what it is in the lines of Megan. I laughed a lot during the movie.

The people around the bear aren't that bad, like Isiah shiiiiiiiiit Whitlock and the Ranger, added to the movie. An enjoyable time and it's only an hour and a half.

Cool to see Whitlock and Martindale on the series, Your Honor. Whitlock plays the best friend, and Martindale the mother-in-law, to Cranston's character.

I just finished watching this horror flick on Hulu.

The premise has been done over the past 15+ years since the debut of “Blair Witch”. This film puts a different spin on it.

If you suffer from Movie ADHD, this film was made for your condition.

The film takes place sometime in 2020 at the height of the Covid Panic. This is probably one of the first horror flicks based around the pandemic, there should be more in the future.

When you watch the trailer, what you see is the film is from the POV of a livestream happening online. There are 4 things happening at the same time with instant messaging at the bottom left, Viewership number on the top right, Emoji icons bottom right and the main feature on the screen. All of these play together for the film.

The first 20 minutes of the film is primary character introduction/development. Hulu did a good thing of having two commercial breaks during this time cuz right after the 2nd break at the 20 minute mark, the film goes into SHTF status and continues non-stop to the end.

Plenty of gore and violence when it goes into SHTF mode. There is a lot of camera motion/blurring which gives it an online/buffering feel to what is going on. That is all by design.

The end credits play somewhat to the movie. They left it off for a possible sequel.

Synopsis

At the start of the pandemic, an indulgent and self-deluded livestreaming improv musician abandons L.A. for London, steals her ex-band mate's car, and makes the wrong decision to give a ride to an elderly woman who is not what she seems.

Luther: The Fallen Sun

The Man in tweed is back !!

PRAISE: 4 years has been far to long to have DCI John Luther in the MIA column of pop culture.
But I'm glad he's back in action in Luther: The Fallen Sun. This time around A serial killer terrorizes London while disgraced detective John Luther(Idris Elba) sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary.
The cast including: Cynthia Erivo · Andy Serkis (Looking a bit like Joe Pesci did in JFK)David Robey Martin Schenk and Archie Woodward do a fantastic job.
Writer Neal cross has written another white knuckle ride perfectly weaving the dark web,and a diabolical and sadistic killer who plays on fear and shame to carry out horrible situations. The tension is raised to nearly overwhelming levels especially in a standout out scene that was harrowing and involving. One of the best I've seen in a thriller like this. Some of it reminded me of Ed Piksor's great Red Room graphic novels. Though I would have liked more of Luther dealing with his own past and pushing his pursuits of bad people to the limit there is enough here for it to be effective.

PROBLEMS : Some predictable turns and suspension of disbelief was pushed to the limit several times.

Cocaine Bear

Higher than your average bear !!

PRAISE: Director Elizabeth Banks expands and boosts the true story of an American black bear that ingested millions of dollars of lost cocaine in 1985.
The movie is as crazy and outrageous as the trailer promised and as it wants to be. I thought the kids in the movie were absolutely funny but the other actors in the film had some fun moments here and there. There is a ton of gore and some violent moments actually caught me off guard. Some intense moments are definitely not for the faint of heart. I was amused when the movie inserts some tender moments with the mayhem. There was actually a twist I didn't see coming. Some good and creative kills mixed with some humorous moments.

PROBLEMS: The side stories in the film never add up to much and just felt like filler. Most of the characters are just set up to be victims of the bear or other calamities.

Scale of 1 to 10 a 7½

MBJ did a good job with the directing. The fight scenes were pretty well done. He did some sequences a little differently which I enjoyed.

Jonathan Majors was the star of the movie. When he wasn't on the screen I didn't care that much, because I'm not the biggest fan of MBJ acting. Wait, there was one other character. Tess and MBJ daughter. She was also a stand out.

Only problem I really had is that the movie is predictable as hell. Especially with the trailer. You already know practically everything that's going to happen.Wood Harris had a bigger role and seemed to take on the Rocky role.

Overall it's somewhere in the middle of the first and second.

but I hope they don't make anymore. There's nothing else to say since they skipped so many years to the point he was supposed to be retired for several years and came out of retirement for this fight.

Honkytonk Man (1982)

The Wagoneer family are surviving the Depression by picking cotton on their family farm in Oklahoma. During a terrible dust storm, Mrs. Wagoneer's rogue brother Red (Clint Eastwood) arrives in a convertible. Red is a country-western musician who has just been given the chance of a lifetime, an audition for the Grand Ole Opry. But there are some obstacles to his getting all the way to Nashville: He has no money, is a terrible driver, and has tuberculosis. The family's fourteen-year-old son Whit (Kyle Eastwood) sees an opportunity of his own and offers to go with Uncle Red as his driver. His mother consents and uncle and nephew hit the road.

Don't let the title fool you.
This is a great movie and that got 93% from Rotten Tomatoes when it was released.

Dope (2015)

Director Rick Famiyawa brought us The Wood, Brown Sugar, Dope, and even directed the first episode of Season 2 of The Mandalorian.

This is a very cool and clever movie. I dug it. I saw it in the theater here in my White ass town and I was the only person in there.

I always support Black movies, even if i buy a ticket on discount Tuesday and don't go in to see the movie.

Dope is on Netflix if you wanna check it out

Didn't know it was on Netflix. I saw it at the movies.

It was funny how someone on this board tried to say the new House Party wasn't supposed to be for for 30 and up. Besides several reasons I gave showing the exact opposite, this was along with several other coming of age movies in the past ten years shows it can be done a whole lot better
