Too bad no one will listen.

He was dissing Puff & Mase back in the day, 1997, and was labeled as simply old.

Oh, you mean like Kool Herc? Yeah, you right. He's only in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame because he ushered in most of the rap performers after him.

Re: Melle MelSays New York Rap Fell Off When They Starting Taking Westcoast's Gangste

its funny how just about the only hip hop cats with sense when you hear them speak are the old school ones.

Re: Melle MelSays New York Rap Fell Off When They Starting Taking Westcoast's Gangste

Mel is spittin some real life knowledge but in reality he will be looked at as another grumpy old dried up rapper reserved for an old folks home for rappers.

I said the exact same thing in the late 80's as gangsta rap or "reality" rap sales skyrocketed and took over the industry. (Didn't Common say the same thing with "I Used To Love H.E.R."?) Everybody wants to blame the big corporations or the white man but don't want to blame the black community for gobbling that stuff up.

Of course the big corporations do share some blame but they did not invent gangsta rap. They simply profited off of it and exploited it for money.

Nobody is going to listen to Melle Mel or Chuck D or any of these old rappers. They are perceived as senile and irrelevant. There are billions of dollars being made now. Black folks will eat this stuff up like they will a Friday The 13th movie or the new Saw movie or whatever. Sex and violence will always sell when it comes to entertainment.

I hear you Mel but the game is too big right now. There will always be a few that try to be different but they will barely get noticed if they are noticed at all.

Its a shame that when someone tries to speak the real they are look upon being jealous or being too old......I mean if I had an older person trying to tell me some knowledge I will go out of my way to listen....you dont see that in this generation of kids...If you call them out on their garbage their fans will call you a hater.....If you sit them down in a respectable manner they dont listen....Ive said this many times....this young kids cant take criticism to save their life :smh::smh:

Re: Melle MelSays New York Rap Fell Off When They Starting Taking Westcoast's Gangste

some of the responses to this video is exactly what Mel was talkin' about. It ain't about stackin' chips. It's about what you're sayin'. Just like Mel said, Half of the guys playin' gangsta in hip hop ain't even gangsta. It's really ashame because there are alot of hip hop songs out there that are saying something but, they get no airtime. Because they won't sell CDs or whatever.

One song that come to mind (speakin' on what Mel was talkin' about when he spoke about female rappers) is "Love is Blind" by Eve. She talks about women in abusive relationships. She's spittin' the truth but, if you don't have the CD, you probably would have never heard that cut.

The message got lost years ago when hip hop went mainstream. I mean, everybody knows it. It's not like I had a revelation. I'm just sayin'. There's nothing wrong with talking about dope and hoes and so forth and so on. However, when you glorify it, you send the wrong message.

Re: Melle MelSays New York Rap Fell Off When They Starting Taking Westcoast's Gangste

Really?

But that's exactly what B.I.G. ('Dude brought the East back, y'all better believe that' ) did.

Re: Melle MelSays New York Rap Fell Off When They Starting Taking Westcoast's Gangste

I concur. Well said Melle Mel

Same here, but I think the "Gucci, Louie, Maybach, Benz, triple beam, look at my watch and rings" rap is getting too much of a pass. I think that killed NY rap more than the gangsta shit. Earlier to get on, niggas had to pretend to be dope dealers and killers, now they have to pretend like they own a Lambo. SMH @ niggas using the Robb Report to write their shit.:smh::rolleyes:

Re: Melle MelSays New York Rap Fell Off When They Starting Taking Westcoast's Gangste

I see it like this: you don't see yourself as a fool until you see someone acting stupidly and then mutter to yourself, "He's a fool" and suddenly, realize you act the same way.

These rappers were acting selfish for the sake of money and didn't care. Now that the fans were being selfish for the sake of money, they want us to play fair.

In the beginning, rap had better role models poineering the game. The West and South got paid well for their maturity and the East relented and wanted to get paid also.

New York rap ain't getting no shine back until they get creative and stop rapping for cash. And stop being so crabbish.

Re: Melle MelSays New York Rap Fell Off When They Starting Taking Westcoast's Gangste

Really?

But that's exactly what B.I.G. ('Dude brought the East back, y'all better believe that' ) did.

I feel you Mr. Met but, B.I.G.'s underlying message was "I went from NEGAtive to POSItive. Remember the scene in "Notorious" when he told Puff he wanted to do something different? He said his head wasn't there no more.

The U.S. has always been infatuated(sp) with gangsterdom. Wether it's the Mafia, gang bangers or what have you. We, as consumers, just about forced the industry's hand. Wyclef kinda talks about it in his cut "The Industry".

Re: Melle MelSays New York Rap Fell Off When They Starting Taking Westcoast's Gangste

another negro who isn't getting no chips.

I guess your right he isn't getting paid like the gansta ballers. Look what happened to them!

Re: Melle MelSays New York Rap Fell Off When They Starting Taking Westcoast's Gangste

Mel is spitting the pure truth. There are not many rappers that appeal to blacks trying to do something positive. We should not accept this as a community.

Re: Melle MelSays New York Rap Fell Off When They Starting Taking Westcoast's Gangste

Really?

But that's exactly what B.I.G. ('Dude brought the East back, y'all better believe was much that' ) did.

B.I.G didnt bring the east back, The east bought the east back. At that time u had so many other acts that was bringing heat as well(Black Moon, Wu Tang, Nas, etc). BIG was just a piece in the puzzle, it was much bigger than him

Re: Melle MelSays New York Rap Fell Off When They Starting Taking Westcoast's Gangste

And NY copied their style down to a science.

Thats ironic Jimmy, NWA was the start for the demise of rap period.
