Hip hop started in NY Jimmy you know this, back in the 80's was dance and love rap then in the early 90's a shift changed when NWA came out coupled with the media over hyping them and the crack epidemic and coming out of the Reagan era NWA made waves and long gone was the love and dance rap and intellectual rap... Ever since then negative hip hop sold and either niggas had to get on the bus or get the fuck off.

So yes Jimmy West Coast gangsta rap was the fall and death of hip hop, are you proud of that? couple that with the South who resurrected it and killed it 3 times over.

NWA spoke the real about what they saw in the streets & their experiences. I guarantee your muthafuckin Police penchant that if NWA had been an east coast group your response in this subject would be 150% different.

Sounds like you're mad no NY niggas started the trend before us.

Fuck outta here saying NWA killed hip hop cuz

Re: Melle MelSays New York Rap Fell Off When They Starting Taking Westcoast's Gangste

Whenever someone says anything " uplifting" why do we hear the same ol sheep dudes talkin about "NO ONE WILL LISTEN" Just do your part and stop worrying what the next man will do. Get some self-esteem and stop being pessimists. Kats can't even listen to a new song without wondering who else likes it before they give it the o.k.

You sound stupid, why the fuck would I be mad at you wack ass west coast niggas? You mack 10 redmerchant butt gangsters are noodle status. I bet Dub C still crip walkin huh? Its actually ashame that NY artist had to adopt that bullshit ass trend just to have commericial success.

And no my response would still be the same if an ny artist started gangsta rap, as a matter of fact an ny artist was at the forefront of it after nwa his name is Tupac Shakur.

Admit it, son. You don't know anything about the transition. That wasn't your time. The man behind NWA helped push that mentality into rap. Before NWA, it was "amazing" to hear a rapper use one curse word on an album. Gangster was supposed to play itself out like beat boxing, reggae vocals, rock fusion, to usher in new styles but it never came to pass.:smh:

Plus there were forces out to play positivity rap in late 90s. Corporate lawyers began lobbying for outlandish sample laws that made it impossible for the flagship group of positive rap Public Enemy to maintain that HIT SQUAD sound. Soon after PE lost their appeal.

Re: Melle MelSays New York Rap Fell Off When They Starting Taking Westcoast's Gangste

The replies in this thread is an example of why hiphop has went down the drain...look at the arguements?east vs west?copying?

Its like each and everyone of us are trying to out-ghetto each other while trying to be gangsta about it.Thats not hiphop and never really was but thanks to yall it is...

But gansta rap wasn't the only variation to come out've the West Coast.

There were crews like Digital Underground, Pharcyde, Souls Of Mischief (Hieroglyphics) Saafir & the Hobo Junction, Madkap, Freestyle Fellowship, Alkaholiks and a host of other enlightened groups that really dropped science and positivity back in the day.

Unfortunately, many of these groups were never given their props by heads on the East and in some cases, got totally slept on and ignored by salty mufuckas who just wanted to deride anything that came from the West Coast.

If anything "killed" HipHop it was our collective inability to embrace the diverse greatness of all regions and the styles spawned by our struggle in the diaspora to utilize our creative spark to full effect.

It shouldn't matter where a rapper hails from as long as he or she is bringing the real shit.

Anything less is just pure hatred.

just-ice, kool g rap, and many others rappers before nwa were on that gangster tip a long time ago. nwa just blew up off it first thanks to jerry heller exploiting it to the fullest.

its not about east or west coast, its about exploiting wack music that's in at that specific time period and trying to make a quick buck off of it. you can't expect that type of music to make a positive long term impact on a entire genre.

All hip hoppers know G Rap is the father of East Coast gangsta rap. NWA got more controversy when they did it, because they made songs like "Fuck the Police", and I will say more east coast acts emulated them when they seen their success. But in the beginning, before Big, before 50, and all the other knuckleheads, there was only one mc that was spitting hard street stories about murder and other harsh realities, and that was G.Rap

Re: Melle MelSays New York Rap Fell Off When They Starting Taking Westcoast's Gangste

was only one mc that was spitting hard street stories about murder and other harsh realities, and that was G.Rap
1.The fact that there was as you put it only one mc spitting that way says alot compared to how many of them are doing it now.

2."Stories"-thats what they were and for the most part still are but when did that line between reality and fiction for this form of music become blurry???

The majority of the rappers that rap now never been through 95% of the stuff they rap about and for the ones who have, they are still plagued by it in some form or fashion...

This is true and very fucked up. Growing up in NY, I always had an open ear and bumped all types of shit, so many of my peers would look at me like I'm crazy. Im from the Stretch and Bobbito generation, we used to stay up to 1 in the morning just to hit record, so when I walk to school in the morning I would have some heat. The ill thing about Stretch and Bob is they played shit from everywhere, thats how I learned about Hobo junction and alot of groups from outside the east coast.

Back in the day it was all about originality, and it was cool to be different. Alot of cats knew that G.Rap was the gangsta rapper, so they wouldnt touch that, because its biting. Just like niggas couldnt come out rockin suits with a gang of ladies, because they knew that was Big Daddy Kanes chamber. As a result, cats would go back to the drawing board and create some new shit... But now the game flipped and its cool to be the same. I have no idea where the shit went wrong, but the artistry and creativity is supposed to be embraced:smh::smh:

Are Catz on here reliving east coast vs west coast convo? Is this 1995 again?

Re: Melle MelSays New York Rap Fell Off When They Starting Taking Westcoast's Gangste

Who was the first Hip Hop group to display guns on their album cover?

"Criminal Minded"
"9mm Goes bang"
"Super Hoe"

That sounds like gangster shit to me.

*One of my top 5 favorite albums of all time.*

Respect to Kool G but...

Why hasn't anyone dared mention an artist out of Philly by the name of Schooly D? I do recall PSK and Saturday Nite actually was one of the first "gangsta albums" recorded. Even Ice-T admitted he was and influence.

Some of these fact checkers in here have flawed and limited research skills. Not you, freshnclean, I'm just looking at the comments and :smh:

this arguement is going to get NOWHERE. let this shit hit 5 pages go back and realize how stupid that shit looks. Jimmy feels the way he feels so no matter what you say even if it makes sense he not gonna change his views so just leave it be.

Re: Melle MelSays New York Rap Fell Off When They Starting Taking Westcoast's Gangste

NY started that flossing rap, Thats when NY rap fell off.

"west coast gangerism" was never really bitten, because when NY was on that hardcore shit, the Murder rate in NY was insane..(much higher than any city per capa)

so it was just niggas reporting from the streets.

Melly Mel doesnt really know shit about the that particular subject because he was irrelevant even in the late 80's.

nigga fuckin please....you may need to visit the N.W.A. family tree...

NY niggas never got over getting the game taken from them...1st from the West Coast and now the South

Maybe if ya'll would stopped with all that Super Nigga Gun toting, I'm Nino Brown jr. rap bullshit ya'll would be in a better place...that's what really killed NY rap

as for the west coast...it fell off after PAC died and we are just now seeing a resurgence of sorts
