I feel a lot of this younger generation can put on the pioneers a lot more but as stated its a two way street.
A lot of these rock/heavy metal festivals have a mix of old and new school. Sadly, it's mainly new school when it comes to hiphop festivals. That should tell you something.

no one is talking about forcing anyone to do anything its called an offer...an invitation. Thats a gesture of respect from the people IN THE GAME not just the fans. If your a premier basketball player and dr j is in the audience you put the spot light on him for a second and acknowledge his contribution to the game..
you invite him to sit with you on the bench. you talk about his influence on your game and career in the post game interview even if your really a magic johnson fan. Its acknowledging a statemen in the game and someone who came before you.
look at my analogy..DR.J predates Magic and Jordan and Iverson and Lebron. That high flying above the rim style was popularized by him long before those cats if you know anything about basketball you should know that and respect it for that reason regardless. He recognized an elder in the culture even if its not a rapper he personally listened to or liked like that. Clearly thats something Mel feels is missing from black rappers he named.

When you talk about the early 80s (79-83) all youre talking is them. So from his perspective.. he should be able to go anywhere in this country and be recognized and be invited to sit at the table anywhere he goes on on both coasts. Look at the cats he listed from Jayz(east coast) to rick ross and j cole(south) to Kendrick lamar (west coast)...thats a not a random listing.

Post civil rights/affirmative action generation strikes again. Its is OUR responsibility to preserve the legacy and history.
We SHOULD have a hip hop museum...
Uncle Ralph McDaniels should be seen as an official hip hop archivist
We need to have a society that preserves ALL mixtapes and video of performances.
It is OUR responsibility.
Remember the ATCQ documentary...they all hated on Michael Rappaport and YES it wasn't GREAT but it was a labor of love and he DID it.
If it is OUR history WE need to be the ones that curate it.

Then for Kane to talk like we don't know who the old school legends are is more bullshit.

These old school cats are just mad that no one put them on sooner for a second shot at fame and popularity now that they are lining up to do tours again.

This shit is just a gimmick for Macklemore and for them. And it's an unnecessary one. They should be about bridging the gap but they only causing a rift.
I get that it's a big compliment from Macklemore to include the old school hip hop legends on a song. It makes him look knowledgable and respectful to the culture.
But all this ranting by Mel is just publicity for themselves and Macklemore's benefit. He does a song with them and in turn they shit on his competition. Making the competion look unappreciative and disrespectful.
Macklemore won with this move because it was unexpected and it may put him ahead of a growing trend if this catches on and line him up for more Grammy wins like the last time.
