Melle Mel is being used, and his rants are decisive. No young dude wants to be yelled at, to get their attention.

Then you and the rest of the black people like you who are old enough to remember them who grew up on them should be the ones supporting the acts of your time right?

Old heads are getting booked overseas because everywhere else in the world is LATE. they're not current with what we're doing in another 10 years the acts of today that aren't mega stars will get discovered over there and be big.

Stop trying to make the youth today hold up their end AND your end of the shit too.

You and your ilk need to go to the shows. we're creating now.
you keep the history alive.

Re: Melle Mel Calls Out Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole For Not Connecting To Hip Hop

I don't understand why Macklemore can't just be a hip-hop artist who brought out his favorite MC's. People act like he's some new kid and that Thrift Shop song was his first attempt at rapping. Dudes been in the game for years and that just happened to be the song to get him noticed.

Re: Melle Mel Calls Out Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole For Not Connecting To Hip Hop

Macklemore could bring 2pac and Big back to life and he would still be corny as fuck.

"That ain't hip-hop you find that shit in the gift shop"

"I know for a fact that J. Cole or Kendrick Lamar or Rick Ross or Jay Z or any of these cats, they would not have done it, ever," Melle Mel says. "They would not have done it. It took him to do it. And all those other so-called 'real cats,' they should hang their heads because somebody should have done it by now. They could have reached back to any of us. If you’re making records and you say you’re Hip Hop, you’re supposed to have a connection to what Hip Hop really is. And nobody made that connection until Macklemore made the connection.

his issue isn't with fan support..

for the new skool rappers who do it..its what they SHOULD do..for those that haven't thats a shame..and thats who he's talking about.

Re: Melle Mel Calls Out Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole For Not Connecting To Hip Hop

Macklemore didn't do this shit to pay respect. If anything, he's exploiting hip-hop to make his pop record sound better.

People don't like the song because it isn't authentic hip-hop. You can tell he only grabbed these rappers and put 'em on there just to give the song more authenticity. But it still feels like he's just spoofing hip-hop.

It doesn't feel like Macklemore was really influenced by these cats on his record, he just wanted the record to look better on paper.

Kendrick, Cole and all the other young rappers - you can hear the influence in them. And they'll do features with people who influenced them personally.

Kendrick has worked with damn near every West Coast legend you can think of. J. Cole made a whole goddamn song about Nas. Big KRIT is basically doing his best Pimp C impression.

Mel's just mad that it's not them. He doesn't realize that maybe these kids (who are generations apart from them) didn't grow up on that shit, or even like that shit. And maybe they don't want to throw cats like that on their records, just to say they did, because it ain't real. Maybe they just don't want that Sugarhill Gang/Grand Master sounding shit on their records.

Melle Mel is just happy he got a check and wants more people to give him handouts, let's just be real.

great post.
thats how i see it

Dude stop it this is egregious. :smh:

That's the subliminal message that is being said by all this controversy and its bullshit.

The only reason white people even like hip-hop now is because black people were doing it and it was a sub-culture they knew nothing about.

It was black people that made hip-hop culture what it is today for Mel to be who he is.

White people partake in the culture as well but don't sit up here and shit on black people behind this white boy paying homage.

Your mindset is what ScottyPiffen was just speaking on.

Mel's era is over in the states he can take his act over seas and introduce it to culture with fresh ears to his music. Not everybody is hot and eats off hip-hop forever so you bow out gracefully if you can't hang with the new school. You keep your name alive by grooming other up and comers. When you do that your name stays alive in the mouths of those who make a name for themselves.

I have no problem with Macklemore paying homage or bringing the OGs on, the problem is Mel's response to it. Someone threw him a bone and instead of making the best of the moment he shits on others in the culture. What should be a bridging of the gap between the eras and their fans is turning into a crumudgeoned old mans ranting.

I've heard several artist s/o and homage given to the old school over the decades but now we having selective memory. And only the white boy cares about hip hop now. :hmm:

I understand, Mel wants to keep his legacy alive but hip hop is bigger than him now.

Re: Melle Mel Calls Out Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole For Not Connecting To Hip Hop

And the more I think about it the more it feels like a strategy by Macklemore because those names Mel mentioned are his biggest competition and we know what happen with them Grammys. Mel just been provoked to shit on Mackelmore competion so he didn't have to and carry the burden of dissing in a song. He gets to sit back and look like the nice innocent guy paying homage. So when his competion start dissing they just look like sore losers.

Macklemore proxy dissing now using old school heads as his mouth piece. Knowing their status gives them authenticity and credibility. To the new school fans of Macklemore and the old school fans of Mel and Kane it just makes them respect him even more and solidifies his place a bit better into hip hop.

This was 31 years ago..

J. Cole 30 years old
Kendrick 28 years old

Why would he call out these kids???

Hawaiian Sophie fame 1989, I think he need to leave Jay out of this one.

I went to the movies to see Beat Street, it looks a lil funny to me now. Just imagine a 25 yo watching it today:eek:

Re: Melle Mel Calls Out Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole For Not Connecting To Hip Hop

I get what he's saying but it came off as an old man rant at these "young punks."

I feel a lot of this younger generation can put on the pioneers a lot more but as stated its a two way street.

A lot of these rock/heavy metal festivals have a mix of old and new school. Sadly, it's mainly new school when it comes to hiphop festivals. That should tell you something.

I said it before:

no one is talking about forcing anyone to do anything its called an offer...an invitation. Thats a gesture of respect from the people IN THE GAME not just the fans. If your a premier basketball player and dr j is in the audience you put the spot light on him for a second and acknowledge his contribution to the game..

you invite him to sit with you on the bench. you talk about his influence on your game and career in the post game interview even if your really a magic johnson fan.
Its acknowledging a statemen in the game and someone who came before you.

look at my analogy..DR.J predates Magic and Jordan and Iverson and Lebron. That high flying above the rim style was popularized by him long before those cats if you know anything about basketball you should know that and respect it for that reason regardless. Remember when we used to say "you better recognize"..thats what that means. Thats what macklamore's gesture did regardless of how calculated it was.

He recognized an elder in the culture even if its not a rapper he personally listened to or liked like that. Clearly thats something Mel feels is missing from black rappers he named.

Melle Mel predates all those cats..east coast and west coast..hip hop was created in the east in new york and exploded and migrated from there. When you talk about the early 80s (79-83) all youre talking is them. So from his perspective.. he should be able to go anywhere in this country and be recognized and be invited to sit at the table anywhere he goes on on both coasts. Look at the cats he listed from Jayz(east coast) to rick ross and j cole(south) to Kendrick lamar (west coast)...thats a not a random listing.

again for the black rappers who do that..fine it is as it SHOULD be. for those than haven't..thats shameful. And thats where the issue is.

Re: Melle Mel Calls Out Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole For Not Connecting To Hip Hop

now its his skin color... back when he caught their attention it was either crush him or push him cause he just out sold LiL Wayne without a label or mainstream advertising...

Macklemore, is that you???

Re: Melle Mel Calls Out Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole For Not Connecting To Hip Hop

imagine of chris brown didn't recognize smokey robinson but justin beiber did..

and yes you goddamn right he feels entitled..his contribution helped take a burgeoning culture to the next level..a culture YOU enjoy and THEY make a living doing..at a much more lucrative rate than he ever did. If doing that isn't worthy of feeling entitled to some damn respect then what is?!? Ya'll are incredible with this attitude:smh:

Post civil rights/affirmative action generation strikes again. They sucked up to Mr.Charlie back then (and now with Cacklemore), built NOTHING economically that can be passed down (why these old schoolers didnt start labels or something tangible so they dont gotta whore for a check?), and they treat their "kids" like they owe THEM while hating to see them do better. Complete failures in life who need to sit down and shut up. Im all about respecting OGs BUT only if they built something or share information. Just being old demanding respect just cause dont make you an elder just an older.

he didn't pass anything down..he passed down a fuckin culture and example of how to produce hip hop.

he didn't start anything...who the fuck was doing it like he did it BEFORE HIM??

its not just ignorance its the DEFIANCE in your ignorance thats astonishing:smh::smh::smh: the INWA generation

Ignorant Niggas With Attitude..:smh:

Re: Melle Mel Calls Out Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole For Not Connecting To Hip Hop

Tell Melle Mel to go crying to the CACs and Jews who own the labels that have profited the most ECONOMICALLY off the "culture he built". Nah he'd rather take shot at the young black kids who work for them and say THEY owe him instead while praising a CAC. :smh:

Re: Melle Mel Calls Out Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole For Not Connecting To Hip Hop

Why?

Why do they NEED to do that?

They don't imo.

I hate that shit. If you do it fine. If you don't it should be fine too. Paying homage in your own way should be perfectly fine.

There shouldn't be a set of fucking rules you HAVE TO DO in order to prove that you're paying homage to people that came before you fuck that bullshit.

Why force them on a track they probably don't belong on?

Why force them on a tour they don't belong on

why make a mixtape when your styles probably won't mesh?

just to do it?

Its people YOUR AGE that should be keeping their music alive. Its people YOUR AGE that should be going to their shows and supporting them and selling out their shows when they come to your city.

do YOUR FUCKING JOB

stop passing the buck

I understand where Mel and Kane coming from but THAT statement right there turned me around.

Its is OUR responsibility to preserve the legacy and history.

We SHOULD have a hip hop museum...

Uncle Ralph McDaniels should be seen as an official hip hop archivist

We need to have a society that preserves ALL mixtapes and video of performances.

It is OUR responsibility.

Remember the ATCQ documentary...they all hated on Michael Rappaport and YES it wasn't GREAT but it was a labor of love and he DID it.

If it is OUR history WE need to be the ones that curate it.

Unfortunately Mel named the WRONG those particular rappers...

because all 3 ALWAYS show love to originators (no pun intended)

Mel can find all he excuses he wants to justify his decision as somehow noble but it isn't.

He was used by the white boy, he got paid and I hope he can parlay it into something...

And I would love a small tour with all of them finishing up at MSG...like a fresh fest 2016

Re: Melle Mel Calls Out Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar & J. Cole For Not Connecting To Hip Hop

Y'all keep saying he shoulda did it another way

what the fuck u think these old school cats been saying for the longest while being interviewed it's just now yall listening because its only news because of Macklemore

Everytime u asked a question or make a statement it's not always going to be said the way others might want but it's whatever

It was the truth tho so......

It's a trend with your generation though fam unfortunately.
No responsibility for the time when they had it.
When yall had it and it was new and all of this shit nobody thought to create or preserve or setup anything in place for the young dudes to follow. now you want the young dudes to do all the work for you that should have already been in place for them to go along with.

all those shows and concerts and shits they could've made a hip hop hall of fame when they had the juice in hip hop.

they could've made an annual festival for young and new artists that would be seen as an honor to play with the juice they had

we talking 30 years almost 40 years of hip hop but now it's on dudes who just now seeing success for 3 or 4 years to take the responsibility for the other 37 years of folks who just partied it up and didn't do shit?

What festival did they create when they had it to start a tradition?

What hip hop hall of fame did they organize when they were the ones in power?

When they had the juice nobody could tell them shit.
party it up
buy gold chains
fuck hoes
get money

now though
we should do everything they didn't do and shame on us for not doing it like they didn't

they ALREADY DO IT.

that's the point.

The simple shit you're talking about they already do.
i gave plenty of examples from the people he so called tried to call out.

HE NEEDS TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THE PEOPLE WHO HE FEELS HE INFLUENCED AND HIT THEM UP

other old school artists get major love from the regionally artists that were influenced by them

PERIOD.

So no one ever paid homage to the old school until Mackelmore now?

You know for a fact no one else would've done with Macklemore did?

For Mel to say he knows for a FACT any of those artist never would've did what Macklemore did is some bullshit.

Then for Kane to talk like we don't know who the old school legends are is more bullshit.

So Rakim and GRap don't deserve the same respect and admiration?

These old school cats are just mad that no one put them on sooner for a second shot at fame and popularity now that they are lining up to do tours again.

They talking like they needed a new school co-sign to get the respect they feel they deserve.

Melle Mel been inducted in the hip hop hall of fame why he need to shit on the new school acts for? Because a white boy out you on a song? WTF?!

This shit is just a gimmick for Macklemore and for them. And it's an unnecessary one. They should be about bridging the gap but they only causing a rift.

I get that it's a big compliment from Macklemore to include the old school hip hop legends on a song. It makes him look knowledgable and respectful to the culture.

But all this ranting by Mel is just publicity for themselves and Macklemore's benefit. He does a song with them and in turn they shit on his competition. Making the competion look unappreciative and disrespectful.

Macklemore won with this move because it was unexpected and it may put him ahead of a growing trend if this catches on and line him up for more Grammy wins like the last time.
