Live action Mulan now on Disney Plus 9/4/2020 for 30 bucks.

One more point, no studio EVER thinks that a movie is going to brick. Ever! If they did, they wouldn't do it. Many times they were wrong as hell, but absolutely no business spends money without assuming they are goung to make money. Especially movie studios.

Sometimes they do, and at times they know when to cut their losses. Like with Greyhound.

Plus they'll go and re-edit or do reshoots after seeing the release and getting reaction from the test screenings.

there's plenty of movies that once completed the studios knew or strongly suspected the movie was going to tank. Sometimes, they get shelved for years, other times they do a quick release just to recoup some money and call it a day. Or as someone mentioned, they spend a shit load of money on reshoots (see Justice League and Solo).

exactly.

some movies get made and get shelved permanently. there are completed movies that will never see the light of day rotting on studio shelves/servers.

Ok so i asked my ex about this..

So this is what I got

Disney NEEDS money

but this is ALSO an EXPERIMENT

if they get a good number?

Yup this is gonna be a THING and maybe create like a second tier primere service WITHIN the app

If it fails or the public HATES it?

Its gone.

So far the industry thinks its a BAD idea its like you ENCOURAGING bootlegging.

Also if you purchase it, anyone sharing your subscription sees it too so...

And also the AUDIENCE they targeting? Are VERY prone to get this movie in other ways.

Just saying.

You are correct regarding after the movie is made. I should have clarified. I was speaking moreso regarding before the movie is made. The decision to go to shelve a movie is after the advanced screenings. But again, no movie studio produces any movie thinking it is going to brick. They find this out only after they have committed finances.

Nonetheless, movies will have smaller budgets. There is no question about this.

understood.

However, I do find it funny that once a studio commits they will go through with it and complete it no matter what. I don't think there has ever been a case where a major studio realized they made a mistake green-lighting a movie and just said fuck it and pulled the plug in the middle of production. Now I have heard studios halting production if it is still in the early stages, even if a lot of money has been spent. Supposedly, Denzel made a shit load of money with American Gangster because of his original pay or play contract.

This movie was always for the international crowd to begin with. I think the real test for American audience's would be with a movie like Tenet or maybe Black Widow

I mean specifically how these streaming services and VOD gonna progress from here on out.

facts...

but look at how that sh*t show Artemis Fowl was released on the app...

it was a MESS and even they version they released had continuity errors and honestly made no damn sense.

But they had ALREADY invested so much money they HAD to release it..

but made MORE in this case and saved face and got +GOOD PUBLICITY

over a REAL theatrical release where hey would have LOST even MORE. with the bad press bad ticket sales etc.

This a deal. It would cost me 60plus to go to a theater with my kids... Fair price for me to see at home. And if it leads to movies being released this way, we all win. Except theaters

I wouldn't say Disney needs money per say but they are like you said trying this out to see how it goes over. But if this is successful would Disney scale back the costs on upcoming movies and lets not forget they got that huge FOX catalog now too, they could play around and do some reboots that would not be so upfront costly.

when I say NEED money of course I mam being factious but you KNOW what I mean...

they aint trying to take any more losses especially for projects they were projected to be money makers.

you are 200% correct I think the app gonna be a real STRONG viable options for series etc from fox don't forget HULU

The school should not be paying $30. Then they would not make money. A school got to pay a crazy license fee.

Mulan could have made them 500m-1billion worldwide.

Now, they might be just breaking even.

Movies are over.

I'm guessing they hoping schools will pay for this movie to play in auditorium, classrooms, kids parties, kid gatherings

damn, shit was that bad? I tried watching it but got side-tracked. I was going to go back and really watch it, but now not so sure..lol.

Family of 4 movie tickets, popcorn, drinks...
easily double that in cost

And don't let it be one of those theaters that serve real food and adult beverages... that makes $30 a steal, especially if you can watch it multiple times in a designated rental period

^^^

all true and this is what needs to be clarified

cause if NOT?

failure

I can see this $30 Disney+ option just for american market, cause they need to get that box office market in the Chinese market, that can potentially break their all time box office record there held by Wolf Warrior 2

I think you'll get it for a 24hr viewing window... watch it as many times as you want

My boy had rented a movie like that, on demand I think it was and as soon as it hit 24 hours that bitch stopped playing... he say he was mid movie and it just went blank, sopranos style

yeah thing is?

Kids aint gonna like that especially during quarantine

they can watch the animated version as much as they want...along with ALL the other live action versions

while they WAIT for this to be free

and bgol studios open 24/7/365.

OI am VERY curious how the mouse gonna play this during a difficult economic time in the country and kids home.

Its September 4th not 24th.

Disney revenue is down 85% from this time last year. They are down 5 billion on entertainment side (movies, TV, etc) and diwn 3.5 billioon on theme park side.

The streaming service is the only aspect of Disney "doing well." They are now over 60 million subscribers.

So, whats the logic behind releasing Mulan? They know people are going to bootleg the movie. But the thought is this. If they can convert 50% of current subscribers regarding paying the $30 for the movie that 900 million. They are also betting on new subscribers signing up to see the movie as well. New subscription plus Mulan is $100. Remember this is world wide, not just U.S. So, if they can capture 1 Million new subscriptions with this play, this plus the current subscribers, the total potential earnings is 1 Billion. This does include the limited theater releases, the future DVD release, or the pay per view for non-Disney platforms.

People, you are witnessing the death of movie theaters and the new normal regarding movie releases. However, expect stricter punishment for pirated movies. Have your VPN ready.
Whats a good VPN?

No they aren't

They'll stick to streaming for movies that are going to brick

You aren't seeing $250 million dollar movies on streaming. You'll see a $20 million dollar movie. The quality of movies will drop immensely.

These movie studios use loans to finance movies and advertising. All of Hollywood would be dead if studios die.
The same was said about this movie and the Greyhound movie, but everyone sees that there is no foreseeable end to the virus thing which means interest adding up on those loans so they will have to except losses. Movies making 1 billion returns won’t come till both economy and virus are handled.

Facetious

Or just say jk.

Trolls World Tour made over 77 million through VOD with a $19.99 price tag.

With Disney's marketing muscle and an installed base of 57.5 subscribers they have probably projected that they can do big numbers on the movie and also gain more subscribers.

If a good amount of ppl do the $30 buy I defintely think this can be a feasible business model for North America but China had became the new #1 market for box office and that's the market you still need box office, Japan and Europe for some movies but definitely Chinese box office

true...but we need to see if that happens AGAIN.

don;t get me wrong that sh*t SHOOK the theaters

but notice the new deals?

I don;t know if you can BANK on that..

but it IS a game changer

I would think New Mutants would have been a PERFECT test case for this.
