Lenny Kravitz :"To this day I have not been invited to a BET or Source awards thing !"

fuck all that. Lenny is an original - I respect the catalog and the consistency.

to be real tho, i dont think being at BET show would have changed shit for him. he would not have gained more fans (who doesnt know lenny?) and he would not have lost any either. i think it would be a positive to include him in the culture like other artists, but not necessary.

It would likely depend on what he performed at the show or who it was with. For example, Jay-Z doing the mash up with Linken Park gave that group exposure to a Black demo. At the time, I remember someone who listened to Rock regularly laughing about the fact that some Black people were only fucking with them off the Mashup with Jay-Z. I can't remember if he thought highly of the group compared to others or not.

Jay-Z also had a song with Lenny, so performing that song or his own popular songs likely would have lead to more exposure to people who may have known him by name, but weren't familiar with his music. I know who Taylor Swift is, but I don't know any of her music to my knowledge. The same is likely the same for Lenny Kravitz. No disrespect but people who don't listen to Roc probably mostly know him for his relationship with Lisa Bonet. In DC, there was a GOGO of Fly Away. I highly doubt people connected that to Lenny Kravitz if they even knew who he was. Being on a Black award show definitely gains him more fans.

Yeah he will get a couple new heads but enough to change his tax bracket? thats debateable. I get your point but hes not like Linkin and Taylor Swift, at least not to me. they are much more of a crossover than Lenny

You do know that racism and segregation were legal until the 70s right? So if BB was disappointed in his audience it wasn't aimed at the Black people.
contrary to popular belief segragation wasnt everywhere in america. Also how do you explain a lack of black audience attendence to his shows in the 70s 80s and 90s?? Ive been to two BB KING concerts in the early 90s and it was 80% white up in there:smh::smh::smh:

ask THIS GUY

who attends his concerts more...and he's the descendant of all those Blues masters..he's the continuation what we started.

I don't know. I know the Grammys isn't the BET awards, but artist do see more sales after winning awards or performing right? During Covid, artist who participated in the Versus saw an increase in streaming/purchases of old music due to the new people being made aware of their hits. Showing up at a Black award show could have also led to more collaborations with rap/r&b artist which gives more exposure and in turn money.

I'm not going to pretend to be a fan or Lenny Kravitz, but he's comparable to LP. Taylor Swift is a unicorn like Beyonce Drake etc.. if you are strictly talking about sales and fans.

Now that I think about it, I thought he was on 106&Park. If true, how are you invited to that, but not the BET awards? Maybe I'm confusing seeing him or his videos on 106&Park with MTV's TRL

Segregation wasnt everywhere but racism was. Kings foundation fanbase was and is Black. When he popularized the art form whites mimicked it and took it mainstream. As a forefather and top act he was able to go on national tours... these tours were mainstream venues that were packed by white majority. When he was still on Beal street, running the chitlin circuit, and doing shows in DC or the Apollo in NY his audiences were Black. Whites hijacked Blues and Rock in the 60s and Blacks gravitated more toward Motown and R&B.. those trends persisted and he became a crossover act.

thats where the examination needs to start....the term gravitate isnt very specific in terms of whys and hows...I mean the specific explanation is we stopped fucking with it because they liked it. but thats kinda a fucked up reason dont you think??

Musical trends and generations differences. Also, being caught in that transition of jim crow and everything that occurred then is important to note as well.

The last Source Awards was in 2005.

If he would like to be involved with Black Entertainment culture, how about he know something about it.

But yes, Black award shows should include other forms of music because we do it all.

Lenny hasnt lived in the United States in years. He's not expected to know about some awards show started by a white man and Benzino(also not black).
