Just saw Django [MERGED~> !SPOILER ALERT!]

Re: Just saw Django [MERGED]

I thought it was a GREAT movie. theater was full of black/white people, both laughing, and cheering together. even clapping at the end. I will be copping the blu-ray when it drops too

Re: Just saw Django [MERGED]

Good point.

To pimp means to exploit. Presenting your history is not pimping its eductaion. Both films you mentioned were tragedies people weren't cheering at the end they were sad because it was real and slavery was sad.

Minus the racial overtones if this was just a straight ultra-violent movie like most qt flicks many people would be flipping out because of Newtown. The slavery aspect legitimizes the violence. This is the exploitation. The violence is fantasy the slavery is real. That's pimping real slavery to sell virtual violence.

I would be upset at whoever tried to make a feel good slave film unless it's real. Show me toussaint louverture epic that's real and I'll go see it because it's not about entertainment its about history. The media of film can be used in many ways. If we educate ourselves better we will better tell the real from the bullshit.

I didn't enjoy roots or goodbye uncle tom but I respected the films.

OK.

So what's your views on the black actors who choose to be part of the film?

I would figure they would catch even more heat than the (black) people who want to watch it being that....

Know what the fuck something is about>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> than (morbid) curiosity.

* two cents*

Re: Just saw Django [MERGED]

Why do they bleep "World trade towers" on Biggie's One More Chance after 9-11 when playing it on radio?

Why do they blur out images of the twin towers in movies?

Therein lies your answer.

You don't use historically painful events for entertainment.

That's a non-no

:smh:

Re: Just Got Back from Seeing Django Unchained...

Just came back from seeing it. That movie was like that. Quentin did his thing with this movie. He actually cut out a lot of offensive scenes I read in the script. This was pretty much a straight forward action sphagetti western. I was clapping cheering and shouting with the rest of the theater goers.

The N word didn't drop as much as I thought. The depictions of slavery weren't as harsh either. It wasn't a bunch of long drawn out melodramatic depictions of slave mistreatment and even though a lot of action takes place at the end, Django pretty much kicks ass throughout the film until the very end. Django carries a lot of dignity as a character throughout the film, he's not a servile to Dr.King Schultz as much as he is a partner. People hating on this movie clearly are not Tarantino fans and that's cool but I say don't judge this film based soley on the director. It's been a long time coming for a film like this dealing with this era of American history, this was the slavery revenge tale I've been waiting to see since Rosewood starring Ving Rhames. I say give it a chance and you will be thoroughly entertained.

Oh yeah and I even seen Melrose Foxx up in there watching too. :D She was looking good. Didn't know she was so tiny though.

Some of these descriptions are surreal...ppl laughing cheering clapping @ this movie...on Xmas no less...like this is some typical holiday movie

Re: Just saw Django [MERGED]

Strange that this day represents the birth of supreme peace for those very people that paid to see this ultra-violent movie today. Strange indeed.

Although I don't celebrate Xmas, I'm right with you on that. I thought about the BET Roots marathon as well. Maybe BET was trying to counter Django's portrayal of slavery? Possibly since they also ran the clip of Spike Lee saying it would be disrespectful to our ancestors to see the movie. Anyhow, the fact that Django was released today is interesting. The fact that so many Christians flocked to see this film (knowing QT's films are violent) is a reflection on how serious Americans take anything...including religion and ancestry.

Django Unchained was one of the best films this year! (Rocky Review)

Django Unchained - FILM REVIEW
by
Rocky Miavia

Django Unchained is Quentin Tarantino's latest film about a freed slave who becomes a bounty hunter in hopes of freeing this enslaved wife. The film is set in 1858. As with most Tarantino films expect blood, gore, great dialogue, iconic characters, and Samuel L. Jackson to pop up somewhere.

Django Unchained has a powerhouse cast of actors driving this film to greatness. Samuel L. Jackson did the damn thing as the Uncle Ruckus-like Mr. Steven. I swear this dude must've studied episodes of that character from The Boondocks to prepare for his role. Jamie Foxx starts out the film very low key, but his character flourishes about mid way into the storyline when he takes up bounty hunting with Waltz. Kerry Washington is fine as fuck (never gave her a second look till now). She did a very good job of using her eyes to convey the range of emotions her character went through. Leonardo DiCaprio's character, Calvin Candie, was an intriguing character in that he had a level of complexity unexpected for the role of a plantation slave owner and mandingo fight manager. Christoph Waltz, who played Hans Landa in Inglorious Basterds, stole the show once again as Django's mentor/partner. It was almost like Waltz was playing a good version of Hans Landa in the wild west. Seriously, has this guy won any awards in the past because he's overdue. Also notable are performances by Walton Goggins (Shane from The Shield), a KKK cameo from comedian Jonah Hill, and the enigmatic Don Johnson as a slave owner named Big Daddy.

The film was bloody, unforgiving, funny at times, and highly entertaining. Tarantino's combination of western and slavery period picture is a strange mixture that works. Slaves in this film were not portrayed as dumb and inhuman. In fact, the humanity of the slaves was portrayed many times in contrast to the inhumanity of the white characters in this film. The film truly shows the evil of whites back then and the despair of slaves who are being forced to do things they know to be wrong. Once again, these actors like Kerry Washington did a good job of conveying emotion with their eyes during some of the horrible acts committed here. And yes, the N-word was used frequently for both identifying blacks and some comic value. Now I know BGOL's e-militants have been on this Spike Lee bullshit in reference to this. Guess what? This is a PERIOD FILM set in 1858. WTF do you expect whites to refer to us as back then? It's a horrible reality, but one you should be ashamed of to help continue IF you use the word yourself today.

Django's path of revenge, recovery, and redemption is an overly long, hyper violent ride but worth the stay. That said, the film is about 20-25 minutes too long. Not in the way most Tarantino films are though. There's not a lot of wasted dialogue and scenes of people doing casual stuff on screen as in most of Tarantino's films. It was just that the final act, while action packed, seemed to do something extra to prolong the end game. Seriously, people in the theater started looking at their watches like "WTF?" when the movie seemed ready to end but didn't. The ending, when it came, was VERY satisfying and I think most of BGOL will be pleased with it. So yes, Tarantino can do westerns too. This guy has touched on a lot of film genres successfully. What's next, sci-fi? Hard to say, but one thing I do know is Django Unchained was well worth my ticket price and time tonight thanks to strong performances from talented actors and seeing a black man get paid for killing white folks. Peace!

Re: Just saw Django [MERGED]

The cinematography in this flick was great! Good use of wide angled lenses. And QT didn't skimp on the blood either.

Funny...especially since REGINALD HUDLIN is one of the producers of Django Unchained.

You said a whole lot of NOTHING here nigga..

Re: Just Got Back from Seeing Django Unchained...

Thanks for the honest review. Can't put no money in Tarantino's pocket, but I'll be sure to download when it hits BGOL!

True. Same here.

Context of racism/white supremacy!

Re: Just Got Back from Seeing Django Unchained...

here one of the big issues for me on whether I'll pay to see it..

is the white dude django's mentor type...meaning the only way he could this is with the white man's help or is django independent?

Good question...!

Re: Just saw Django [MERGED]

you saw her in the theater and didnt try to holla at her? j/p or was she in the movie(havent seen it yet myself)

Naw not in the movie but at the movie. I didn't try to holla. She was in line at concessions I noticed a cute chick up front but couldn't quite tell who it was and after she bought her items she ran back into the theater to see Django. She like 5'2 and shit. Cute though.

Do you want spoilers? Otherwise STFU.

3:45 in the morning and your ass is trolling and trying to start shit with people. Life that lonely?

**adds another one to the Total Ignore list**

Re: Just Got Back from Seeing Django Unchained...

He's dependent and green thought-out the beginning of the film, comes into his own mid 2nd Act, and goes out for a solo rampage in the 3rd Act. Can't explain how or why without spoiling it.

I'm saying in these kinds of stories theres always a white man who has to provide the way..I mean nat turner was born into slavery and lead a pretty effective revolt. Turner had "natural intelligence and quickness of apprehension, surpassed by few."[7] He learned to read and write at a young age.
Turner also had an influence over white people. In the case of Ethelred T. Brantley, Turner said that he was able to convince Brantley to "cease from his wickedness."
Turner started with a few trusted fellow slaves, but the insurgency ultimately numbered more than 70 enslaved and free blacks, some of whom were mounted on horseback.

None of that needed a white man as a facilitator. I'm just giving an example of how a fictional character can be done based on historical events. But carry on..

So he is dependent unlike Nat... Perks of racism/white supremacy. Guess it is what it is.

Re: Just saw Django [MERGED]

Don't forget, BGOL is 98% white. :smh: And yeah, I C/S all that you wrote.

98%? Say it ain’t so. I knew we had a lot of white folks, but damn....

Anyway, my twitter feed overwhelmingly loved the movie and I know who they are so whatever.
