I

Daredevil gave us Ben Urich, Foggy, Kingpin and Punisher, we got Purple Man the female lawyer, we got Cottonmouth Black Mariah.
first of all fuck that team for killing off Urich -then all the insipid screen time devoted to a silly pink toe
Punisher and Electra ALMOST make up for it

it was different and it wasn't bad but it had the problem ALL the marvel netflix do with padding or stretching for more time
and as much as I like Purple Man -
thematically IMO it was a bit much that this new conflicted female superhero is first a victim and the very first real villain she had to defeat was her hyper powered rapist

That's a good point... but I don't know how you can have Jessica Jones without mentioning the Purple Man.

these guys have no patience
whats the rush? You have a TV series - let the story unfold
build up her trauma build up her mystery - let her work through her pain become functional and draw strength gain victories - tease the past with character development of her and flashes of Purple Man and then in s2 or 3 have the cathartic showdown

I get that... but I can also understand their predicament with Jessica Jones. She is a tricky character to handle. I think I liked the show because you knew who caused this trauma to her from day one. I also loved the fact that Purple Man.. really had no idea that what he was doing was essentially rape. To him it was natural... He was basically a child with a dangerous power. I don't know.. but I love it. I can see how it wouldn't be everyone cup of tea but it worked for me.

The one thing that I will agree is that the middle part was lacking. That seems to be the issue with these marvel shows.. which is weird because I think that 13 episodes is the perfect amount.

you aint WRONG

but fam...that is PRECISELY why it resonated so strongly with THAT audience.

there is a LARGE segment of women who feel just like that.

Consider how there was a sudden and LOUD and LARGE backlash to Luke Cage by WHITE MEN talking reverse racism etc.

and I'm FINE with that, it was her introduction and it was well done

if every season was essentially the same thing? Then we got a MAJOR problem.

BOOM...

ya'll hit the nail on the head, THAT is the main issue with the Netflix universe

They must have a deal in place where they are paid and REQUIRED to submit a set number of episodes

and unfortunately these B-List characters cannot sustain that initially.

Especially with restrictions n overlapping with the movies.

They either have to CUT the length/number of episodes or start to allow at least SOME cross over between the movies TV and |Netflix.

There is no need for greater overlap to do solid storytelling -that would just be lazy!
Daredevil has his own sphere of stories as does Heroes for Hire
For almost 40 years those books' story lines seldom overlapped with the rest of MU- unlike the last 20 years, earlier Marvel writers chose to make crossover stories feel special by limiting them

There was no Defenders excuse for Daredevil S1... Good writing vs lazy writing can elevate even a background thread bare character - so there is no excuse. The writers aimed for mediocrity. Instead of a mid season stall on DD S1 following a dumb pinktoe around - imagine if there was a 3 ep arc where a c or d story line involving runaways child porn loan shark slum lord and arson amass killer, a child molesting cop etc. Why kill Urich to show Kingpin unhinged? - there were so many better ways to accomplish that and not lose a valuable supporting character - that is almost up there with Snyder and Jimmy Olsen

Even with greater universe cross overs etc - Daredevil and Kingpin alone can eat up entire seasons with non stop tension.-
On a grand scale Hulk and Iron Man can save the world at 60k feet or in space while simultaneously on a micro scale Kingpin and Daredevil are on the streets in a life death vendetta thats everything for them and people in their sphere.
(people in EastNY, West Bmore, Camden, etc- dgaf about Russia NKorea etc - and if Flynn gets immunity it won't feed any of them or save a life today- here nor in Syria- but life / story still rolls forward)

Another thing, they are trying to "package" all of these characters the same way. Heroes for Hire's, JJ's tone should not be any where near the same as Daredevil. That is a recipe for an eventual breakdown. Daredevil's stories should sometimes be so dark they make the audience uncomfortable. While Heros for Hire should follow a tone similar to the Shield and SoA where serious situations inadvertently cause sometimes violently absurd inexplicable developments or resolutions

The Actresses Joss Whedon May Be Looking At For Batgirl

While Joss Whedon is no doubt busy guiding Justice League to the finish line, the nerd icon is also busy tracking down the actress who will be his lead in the upcoming Batgirl. No names have risen as the frontrunner in any serious capacity, while reports claim that Whedon is looking for "someone new" to bring Barbara Gordon to the big screen. Well, new rumors are pointing to a list of actresses who are up for the part with a few of them listed as frontrunners, with names that include Elle Fanning, Jane Levy, and Naomi Scott.

I hope no one is on a low sodium diet, because you are going to want to take a few grains of salt with this one. A list of actresses who are under consideration to play the lead in Batgirl was posted to the Reddit sub-group DCEU Leaks. The leaker claims to be friends with the artist who was contracted to create concept art of the actresses as Batgirl, and then shared them with the leaker. The leak also claims that Warner Bros. wants to reveal the actress in a surprise announcement at San Diego Comic-Con next month, which makes sense but who knows? Apparently, these four actresses are the frontrunners for Batgirl.

ffb803e26071f117a4e4dbfc5fde141675d85173.jpg

Katherine Langford
According to the leak, Katherine Langford is the leading choice for Barbara Gordon. Langford recently made waves for the Netflix drama, 13 Reasons Why, where she played the lead role and whose suicide the show revolved around. Langford fits the relative unknown they are looking for, and would make an interesting choice for Batgirl. Following behind Langford are these three actresses:

d5254c9939561cb8673dc9ece84272e1aedd3b14.jpg

Elle Fanning
She might not be the first name to pop up on some fans lists, but there's no question that Elle Fanning has built quite the resume for herself over the years. She's appeared in critical hits such as The Neon Demon, 20th Century Women, and the recent film festival favorite, The Beguiled. She also has the benefit of having worked with Ben Affleck AKA Batman in Live by Night.

5a71203ec13dd711cd3ba0cbc75a909c1d7a1fe3.jpg

Jane Levy
Jane Levy is a bit of a no-brainer for Batgirl and has been a top pick on a number of Batgirl wishlists. A living charm factory, Levy can handle Whedon humor thanks to her Suburgatory days, and she's proven her dramatic chops in horror movies like Evil Dead. She proved last summer that she can lead a smash hit too, after starring in the horror flick Don't Breathe.

c361403c66ab8a12528f398965b39a1f107e44b5.jpg

Margaret Qualley
Finally, Margaret Qualley rounds out the list of frontrunners. Qualley is perhaps best known for her role as Jill Garvey on the amazing The Leftovers, so she can definitely handle the dramatic portions of Barbara Gordon's story. She can also be seen in The Nice Guys, Netflix's upcoming anime adaptation Death Note, and a bonkers Spike Lee directed commercial for KENZO World. She's also trained as a classical ballet dancer, so she's got the athleticism required down pat.

While these four actresses are listed as the top contenders, the leak does include a few other names that are up for the lead. The list includes Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel), Bella Throne (Shake It Up!), Emma Roberts (Scream Queens), Haley Lu Richardson (Split, Edge Of Seventeen), and Naomi Scott (Power Rangers). An interesting list of names, to say the least. It's got a few dark horses to be sure, but some -- like Naomi Scott for example -- make a lot of sense. None of these actresses are confirmed to be in running but we'll just have to wait and see what goes down.

The search for Batgirl will have plenty more updates, so keep checking in with CinemaBlend and we'll keep you updated with new information as soon as it becomes available. In the meantime, let us know in the comments what you think of this list and who's your favorite to play Batgirl.

I still haven't finished Iron fist so I can't talk on that

Iron Fist is the only one where I understand the hate... it was horrible

But I completely agree with you on Jessica Jones... you don't see Noir type superhero shows. It was pretty much a detective show with Superpowers... and Purple man was fucking amazing. Easily one of the most terrifying villains that I've seen in awhile.

Yes, Joss Whedon Is Still Attached to Direct ‘Batgirl’
BY ADAM CHITWOOD NOVEMBER 22, 2017

SHARE TWEET

joss-whedon-avengers-age-of-ultron-slice.jpg

In the wake of Justice League’s box office disappointment and critically lukewarm reception, a rumor started circulating about the future of its filmmaker. No, not Zack Snyder—the other one. Indeed, when Snyder left the project to tend to a personal tragedy, Joss Whedon—who was already involved scripting new pages for the reshoots—was tasked with directing said reshoots and overseeing post-production. Whedon didn’t seek a co-director credit and received a co-writer credit due to WGA rules, but regardless, he had a hand in crafting the finished Justice League we see onscreen.

And so a rumor started making the rounds today that Whedon was no longer directing Batgirl, the film that first brought him into the DC/Warner Bros. fold in the first place. According to EW however, a much more valid and trustworthy source, Whedon is still currently attached to direct Batgirl and is hard at work on the script. Now this doesn’t mean Whedon 100% absolutely will be directing a Batgirl movie—the film hasn’t even been greenlit yet, and in Hollywood the status of projects can shift incredibly quickly—but as of right now, Whedon is still toiling away on the film.

Image via DC Comics

Indeed, while Whedon had a strong hand in crafting Justice League, the filmmaker is taking no ownership (at least publicly) of the film at all aside from liking a tweet that took a dig at the terrible villain Steppenwolf. The film is not wholly his, and he came in and essentially did the best he could to shape what Snyder shot and what he wrote into something more in line with what Warner Bros. wanted. But this was not The Avengers, where Whedon was heavily involved in the development and scripting process from Day One. This was more or less acting as a helping hand.

So Justice League’s faults, if Warner Bros. sees it that way, are not necessarily Whedon’s to bear. Thus this rumor didn’t make much sense in the first place. Whedon wrote and directed two of the biggest superhero movies of the century, so why wouldn’t the studio want him spearheading a project of his own for DC?

The larger question here is whether a Batgirl movie is something Warner Bros. wants right now—or more accurately, three months from now. The studio is in something of a holding pattern at the moment with Aquaman in the can and Shazam!, which starts filming early next year, and Wonder Woman 2 as the only 100% greenlit movies in the pipeline. Development continues on films like Flashpoint, Suicide Squad 2, a Joker/Harley Quinn spinoff, Nightwing, and yes Batgirl, and the studio hasn’t exactly decided yet which films will come next. They’re certainly waiting to see what the Week 2 box office will be on Justice League and which adjustments need to be made to their impending slate.

So yeah, Joss Whedon still plans on directing Batgirl at the moment, but the movie is far from the sure thing. For more on upcoming DC movies, click here.

Joss Whedon is still directing Batgirl, sources say
image

DC Comics/Warner Bros. Entertainment
James Hibberd
November 22, 2017 AT 04:02 PM EST
The Warner Bros./DC rumor du jour is that Joss Whedon has been quietly dumped from writing and directing the upcoming Batgirl movie.

In the wake of the somewhat critical reviews and middling box office performance of Justice League (which Whedon co-wrote and managed its directorial reshoots) one can understand why such an idea might gain online traction.

Whedon recently made headlines by favoriting a tweet slamming Justice League‘s villain Steppenwolf, which suggests his feelings about the project must be interesting.

But sources close to the Batgirl production say that The Avengers director is currently at work on the script and remains attached to direct as well. Of course, things could change — top talents get replaced on projects all the time. But as of now, as Dr. Horrible might say, the status is quo.

The untitled Batgirl movie is based on the Batgirl story that was first unveiled in DC Comics in 1967. One has to expect there was some new optimism about the project after the breakout success of Wonder Woman. Whedon was among those who pioneered strong female characters in Hollywood with Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Why Joss Whedon should not direct Batgirl

NOVEMBER 23, 2017 BY RICKY CHURCH 4 COMMENTS

Ricky Church on why Joss Whedon shouldn’t direct Batgirl…

Earlier this week the internet was filled with a lot of rumours that Warner Bros. was no longer interested in a Joss Whedon-directed Batgirl film. Though Whedon has created some of the best stories for the comic or sci-fi genre, from Avengers to Buffy The Vampire Slayer to Firefly, he is not without controversy, now more than ever. As of now, it has been denied that Whedon has been or will be fired from Batgirl, but would it even be a bad thing if he didn’t direct? In my opinion, he’s no longer the right person to bring Batgirl to life.

Some spoilers for Justice League follow…

After taking control of Justice League in the wake of Zack Snyder’s departure from the film due to a family tragedy earlier this year, Whedon conducted reshoots of the film to help lighten to the tone and add in ‘connective tissue’ between scenes and also fired Justice League‘s original composer Junkie XL, getting the legendary Danny Elfman to fill in for him as he did Tyler Bates on Avengers: Age of Ultron. The changes he brought to the film were numerous with some seemingly for the better and others not so much, especially when it came to some of the female characters.

Just take the scene between Lois Lane and Martha Kent for example. This scene featured the pair discussing their personal lives in the wake of Clark’s death and how they each have trouble moving on from his death. It’s a good scene that builds on their characters grief between Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. Then, in perfect Whedon fashion, he includes a joke to go out on the scene: Martha telling Lois Clark said she was “the thirstiest woman he knew.” Cue Lois looking awkward and Martha quickly saying “Or was it hungriest?” and you have an incredibly awkward sexual innuendo in a scene that didn’t need it. If you also notice the picture below, it is a completely different setting to what was in the movie, showing it was in fact Whedon’s scene and not Snyder’s original.

However, if any proof exists that Joss Whedon may not be ready to take on Batgirl, it’s his treatment of Wonder Woman throughout Justice League. Now her actual portrayal in the film is pretty great, continuing her evolution from Wonder Woman and Gal Gadot shines once again in the role, but it’s how she’s treated in the additional and changed scenes that are problematic. For instance, Aquaman breaking her down to mostly her beauty during his truthful confession was a bit jarring and problematic for a scene where he talks about the preciousness of life.

There’s also a beat during the team’s first encounter with Steppenwolf where Wonder Woman is saved by The Flash only for Flash to accidentally fall into her breasts, a beat that Whedon repeated from Avengers: Age of Ultron when Bruce Banner did the exact same thing with Black Widow (let’s not forget the unnecessary “hide the zucchini” joke from that film either). This issue is raised even further if Grace Randolph’s account of the scene is true; that it was part of Whedon’s reshoots but Wonder Woman is actually a body double since Gal Gadot’s face is turned away in the full body shot and he didn’t inform Gadot what the shot was for when he got her reaction. Not to mention some additional shots featured plenty of Gadot’s behind, up close in tight leather pants.

If Batgirl does get made, its important that the film focuses on the strong character Barbara Gordon is and not have unnecessary sexual jokes and shots showing off her body. As good a director as Whedon has been in the past, even with several of his female characters, sometimes it seems like he can’t help himself from being too crass, especially lately. I already mentioned how Age of Ultron had jokes and lines that undercut Black Widow’s character and her relationship with Hulk, distracting audiences from the growth her character was going through. We don’t need something like that for Batgirl, especially as her portrayal in the Batman: The Killing Joke adaptation, where she was reduced significantly to emotional love interest, damsel in distress and heavily objectified, is still fresh in the minds of plenty fans.

Since WB was reportedly only interested in a Batgirl film after Whedon’s initial pitch, maybe if he goes so does the film, though its hard to tell in the wake of Justice League’s disappointing opening weekend. However, that is one reason why it would be wise for WB to drop him. He was brought onto Justice League as early as January, months before Snyder formally left the film, to add improvements. Now, despite my personal feelings on the film (I gave it 4 stars in my review), it clearly did not click with audiences and Whedon’s changes did little to attract mainstream audiences. Word of mouth has been generally good and we’ll see this upcoming holiday weekend if there’s any positive changes in Justice League‘s box office, but as of now the main reason he was brought on to the film, to make it better and more marketable to mainstream audiences, has failed to an extreme.

There’s also the fact that Whedon himself is an issue. Over Justice League‘s opening weekend, he earned the ire of several fans by actually liking tweets from people citing Steppenwolf as the worst comic book villain of all time, even worse than Thor: The Dark World’s Malekith. Many viewed this as a betrayal to Snyder, DC and WB. After all, he worked on the final cut of the film and wrote scenes to improve it and it seems like his changes are much more than the 15-20% the cast says he added. If Steppenwolf failed as a villain, that’s largely on him, not on Snyder, yet he’s liking tweets that blame Snyder for Steppenwolf’s failure.

There’s also the fact that Whedon’s personal life may prove to be a bigger issue for WB. Earlier this summer, his ex-wife wrote a scathing essay about her time with Whedon and the dissolution of their marriage, saying he hypocritically presents himself as a feminist when he’s anything but. According to her, he cheated on her multiple times, citing his power and authority on film sets as a reason he cheated and manipulated her throughout their marriage all the while preaching feminism. Given Hollywood is currently going through numerous sexual harassment and abuse controversies, it would be in WB’s best interests from a business standpoint to remove Whedon from his role as Batgirl’sdirector before his involvement draws any more untoward publicity.

Whedon has done some great work in his time, but it’s fairly clear given his recent decisions in his films that he’s off his game. Wonder Woman was a resounding success for DC and WB by bringing the world’s most popular female superhero to the big screen that focused on her character without sexualizing her or adding in unnecessary jokes at her expense. Batgirl should do something similar, especially since she is one of the next popular female superheroes after Wonder Woman and a huge fan-favourite character in both her Batgirl and Oracle guise. Joss Whedon may have a passion for Batgirl, but I believe he is just not the right director to bring her to the big screen after all this.

The Orpahn Black chick (she looks different in that picture), is a great actress but she seems kind of small to be playing a human,no superpowers, superhero character.

At long last, Batgirl might take flight. After Joss Whedon stepped away from the project — “It took me months to realize I really didn’t have a story,” he said in February — The Hollywood Reporterreports that screenwriter Christina Hodson will write a new script for the DC heroine. Hodson scripted Shut In (2016), the Rosario Dawson–Katherine Heigl thriller Unforgettable (2017), and the upcoming Transformers spinoff Bumblebee. The new Batgirl movie will follow Barbara Gordon, the most well-known version of the character, who is both the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon, and a computer whiz and hacker.

Joss Whedon left the Batgirl movie project, the studio is moving ahead on developing a new film project based on the DC Entertainment heroine.

Christina Hodson, who wrote the upcoming Transformers spinoff Bumblebee, has been tapped to pen a new script featuring Barbra Gordon, the daughter of Gotham City police commissioner James Gordon.

Barbra Gordon is the most established version of the character, who was initially introduced in 1961 as Betty Kane. But the character was revamped in 1967 when television executives wanted to attract a female audience to the Batman TV series, then faltering in its third season. Yvonne Craig played the character whose last live-action big-screen appearance was with Alicia Silverstone in Joel Schumacher's 1997 movie Batman & Robin (the character makes a CG cameo in Ready Player One).

Whedon came on to the Batgirl project with great fanfare last year. Fans were excited that the female empowerment icon, second only to Wonder Woman in the DC stable, would be in the hands of the creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. But by February of this year, Whedon, by his own account, had failed to come up with a story.

Hodson wrote the 2017 Warner Bros. thriller Unforgettable, which starred Rosario Dawson and Katherine Heigl, and has been a player in a couple of writers rooms, for Transformers (which led to her nabbing the Bumblebeegig) and Ology, the franchise Paramount is developing based on the YA fictional encyclopedias from Templar Publishing

Hodson has already written the Batgirl character, having helped to develop a feature project based on the all-female crime-fighting group Birds of Prey.

Hodson is repped by CAA and Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment.
