I think there is a difference. I look at artists like Kanye, Lupe Fiasco and OutKast as Hip Hop. I consider artists like 50 Cent, Jeezy and Jay-Z as rap. What do yall think fam?
first there was rap then came hip hop
rap was vocals over beat machines, keyboards, and/or turntables...the focus was on lyrics though
hip hop was vocals over synthesized sampled music (R&B, Jazz, etc...)
each has its own merits
hip hop is a subset of rap
rap owns everything
Hip Hop is the culture, rap is apart of that culture. There are 5 elements that comprise Hip Hop all of which are pretty much dead except for Emceeing these are:
DJing
Emceeing
Break Dancing
Beat Boxing (Often Excluded)
Graffitti

^ This is the answer except beat-boxing is not one of the elements. LOL @ the people that are trying to say rap and hip-hop are two different forms or some crap. Educate yourselves then speak on it.Hip Hop is the culture, rap is apart of that culture. There are 5 elements that comprise Hip Hop all of which are pretty much dead except for Emceeing these are:

naw man. that ain't true. all the basic forms are alive and well, they're just embraced by the underground. and 'break dancing' is really called 'b-boying' (and even b-girling today). u have to look harder to find practicioners unless you live in a metropolitan area, but it's still there. sheit, i remember when u had to be able to do at least ONE of the 5 elements to be even be in the hip-hop nation. now it's so bastardized, people don't even know the basic elements, let alone that you have to be 'well versed' in one of the elements to even be in the hip hop nation
You're on the right track...but there are only four elements of Hip Hop & beat boxing isn't one of them.
All four are still alive & kicking.

I often hear that repeated. It's like one famous person's opinion stated repeatedly over time that has for some reason been accepted as fact. I disagree completely. The art of graffiti existed long before rap or hip hop and is completely independent of it. Break dancing is a dance fad that came well after the birth of hip hop and is no more attached to hip hop than Soulja Boy's Superman that Ho dance. It was just an early dance trend came and went. Hip Hop and rap is music and only music. Most rappers wear chains and gaudy jewelry but people don't include that as a part of hip hop. Most rappers wear fancy sneakers but are sneakers hip hop? Think for yourselves!

Even-though Chicken and Tortillas have existed for a long time independently it still doesn't change the fact that if you put a piece of Chicken in a Tortilla you have a Chicken Taco. To explain that metaphor all I'm saying is that all those elements celebrated together define Hip Hop and create it's uniqueness. You can separate them if you want but then you don't have Hip Hop anymore.
I respectfully disagree.
Hip Hop is the culture! Rap is the bastard child of Emceeing (MC), which means Master of Ceremonies. This is why you never really see any true freestyling!! Except for the King of Freestyle my man, Supernatural! The Industry has exploited the culture from Hip Hop's early days by forming the Suarhill Gang! Check the history! Oh! My man was right, Beat Boxing is not an element, it is an element of emceeing. Remember it was the Dj who gave birth to Hip Hop!
