I need to vent about work

I just need to vent before I scream...

I know in these "hard times" we should be grateful that we even have jobs, however the rampant bullshit that has to be dealt with is becoming increasingly unbearable.

Back story:

I was 20 mins late to work today due to an accident, a big ass truck was flipped over causing delays. I called my supervisor to inform her (protocol) that I would be late due to unforeseen circumstances. When I got to work she says well we need to know how you are going to make up your deficient time. She asks me to complete a Leave Request Form and give it to her. So I do the form, saying that for the time I was late I will forgo my afternoon break.

She calls me into her office to inform me that its not possible to exchange the time, and I must charge the time to either my vacation, personal holiday, or administrative leave days.

I'm looking at her like :eek:It's not even physically possible to charge less than 1 hour. Her response, true, but you an accumulate it. I'm like that is a huge inconvenience for when we do our end of the year time report, and now that means we have less control over how to use our days and time because now we have to leave days to account for things we have no control over? I say to her I do NOT agree with this method but as it stands that I have no choice, what can I do. You would think that I work at some rinky dink ass bullshit job and not the fucking State University. The largest university in the state. And this is NOT University policy, this is our bosses bullshit ass micro-managing control issue shit. And then we have the nerve to NOT get our annual pay increases that we are entitled to due to our union contracts this week.

If one more person tells me I should be grateful to have a job, I swear I'm spazz out on them.. I really am...

Sorry.. I really just had to vent!:angry::angry:

O hell no. You can' take the issue above your spvsr? If it wasn't for the fact the job was needed...she deserves to be smacked up. 20 minutes??!!

That's the kind of bullshit folks do when they want to 'restructure' to pay new employees less...hope it works out for you...:(

Watch your back. :hmm:
It's a set-up.

This is the bullshit people use to justify 'layoffs'.

You could be a model employee, show up 10 years straight on-time, never take a sick day & work overtime without complaining and this right here...

THIS RIGHT HERE...

Will be their excuse to let you go..

Also remember...

Your supervisor's whole job is to SAVE the company money.

So deducting the 'missed time' from your vacation or sick leave... SAVES MORE MONEY IN THE LONG RUN... than allowing you a shorter 'lunch break'.

Therefore, his/her BONUS will be BIGGER at the end of the year for every 'line item' they can point to and say: "I saved the company (x) dollars this year."

They are not doing stuff like this because they dislike you personally...
S/HE IS TRYING TO GET PAID. EVERY WAY POSSIBLE. PERIOD.

Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. :smh:

If you lose an extra vacation day, or sick day... s/he gets PAID somehow for making it happen.

damn over 20 minutes she knew about the accident too. :smh::smh::smh: was she black white or other? it seems you were victim of an asshole who is taking their "title" to seriously.

Leadership Failure!!! The simplest things can boost morale. The simplest and stupidest things can decrease morale greatly. It appears that your supervisor has to attempt to make others look bad to make herself look good. She is doing it all wrong.

Hang in there. Maybe she will get promoted out of your department.

This is one of the dumbest decisions I've ever seen. So now because of this 20 minute lateness the company has a disgruntled employee. An employee that now may feel justified to not do that favor or not putting in that extra time that's needed. :smh:

Both of you are assuming the employer gives a fuck.

I feel you on that Cleo! ^^^^

Damn... why she trippin' over 20 minutes? I mean, you had a valid excuse. Do you not get along with her? Are you always running late? (you don't seem like the type, but just askin') Just seems as though she took it to the extreme.

What is there to complain about?:dunno: You were late and she could have just wrote you up and called it a day but she allowed you to make up your time. By law you can't use your breaks to make up time. That would get her fired if someone found out. When she found out that you could not make up the time..she kept it real with you. You can't be selfish. You have to think about other people besides yourself. What if she allowed everyone to be 20 minutes late? When you are in position of leadership you can't show favoritism because this would lead to everyone being late.

Now what if her boss came in and asked why you were 20 minutes late and decided to check the time sheets. You asking your supervisor to steal company time because you were only 20 minutes late in which you had plenty of time to cover it. Now your supervisor gets fired and can't feed her family over your 20 minutes. It goes both ways. You can't play the victim.

You are wrong on this. Sick days or Holidays are ALREADY PAID. The company is not saving money at all. The only way they would save money is if she was in a state that does not require the employer to pay vacation time if let go. But if she is in a Union I am 99% sure if fired or let go her vacation time would be paid.

This more with understanding your policies. If you can only take your time in hour increments she should have reported to work an hour late or simply went home 40 minutes early

Don't sweat the small stuff...and this is relatively small in the bigger scheme of things. Frustrating...but small.

Cleo, you know you my girl but Mr. Turd has a point. You can't exchange breaktime (which are mandated by law) for being late. What you COULD do is maybe work 20 extra on that same day. Unfortunately, since you are an employee of the state, your time and time issues are HIGHLY scrutinized and micromanaged. As unfair as it seems, she was 100 percent right in this situation; her hands were tied. Now you have 40 minutes the next time something comes up.

The question you have to ask is whether the supervisor has the authority to do this? Is there a binding union contract? If one exist read over it to determine whether this is allowed. If not what are the State personnel rules governing forfeiture of leave time? A supervisor cannot on his/her own discretion take away a benefit negotiated in a contract or established by state rules.

You have the choice on whether to let it go or not. By allowing it to pass without challenging this decision a precedent would have been established for this to occur in the future.

Read the rules or contract and think about the future consequences of letting this go.

Being that our office isn't so much about profit, that isn't the concern.. the bigger goal of the university may be to make money, but our office gives the money away...

My supervisors supervisor is white, I have 2 direct super visors - one black & one white...
this order to jock our style comes from my super visors supervisor

I don't run late frequently, especially since they've begun their "crack down"

1. The girl who I work with is late EVERY DAY. I get in at 9 and she comes in @ 830 and I've gotten there before her plenty of days. Because she has a child they give her a pass. Other people in the office have exchanged breaks for time, hell I did it before if something like this comes up. My point is they need to be consistent. I have spoke to my union rep about it, and says I have a valid grievance if they continue to pick and choose the people they do this to... And this is only my department inside our office. Our tech team/funds management team doesn't have to deal with this crap. They do have a right do things their way, but if you want to blame the staff for the low morale of the office you need to take a look at yourself as a supervisor. And its not fair, there are plenty of times have stayed late to assist students and not asked for my compensated time, but now since they want to be so stickler, I will be calculating every time I'm staying past hours and asking for my time. Do you really want a work environment like this?? Not only does it cause more paper work for you, it causes it for other offices within the university.. its stupid, even HR said it.
I was just venting, I know why they are doing it, because some people abuse the privilege, but its not fair to others to make them suffer because you want to prove a point to ONE employee. This is not University wide policy its just my supervisor power tripping.

If sick days, holidays & vacations are already paid...
Why would a company deduct her 'lateness' from these categories?

Simple.

To save money on having to pay for additional 'time off' from work.
That's why. (keyword: additional)

Example: If a worker accumulated 8 hours of 'lateness'... (without getting fired, that is )... that's one less WHOLE vacation day, sick day or holiday that doesn't have to be compensated IN ADDITION.

As a result: worker doesn't get paid for lateness (nor should they) PLUS worker loses an EXTRA day of paid 'time off'.

- So if a worker has 5 days of 'pre-paid' vacation
- But loses 1 day due to lateness
- Then the company is only obligated to pay for 4 days of vacation
- Regardless if worker stays, quits or gets fired.
- This saves money.

Theoretically: Say a worker comes in 15 minutes late then stays an extra 15 minutes (i.e. unpaid overtime) to balance things out... They still retain all their extra holiday, vacation, or sick days.

But if a worker comes in 15 minutes late and gets deducted from their vacation for it, the company is not losing that extra vacation money or violating overtime laws/guidelines.

You can sugar coat it anyway you want.
Or debate labor laws of different states.
But issues like this are part of the reason WHY unions are even necessary.

Still Wrong:lol:

This is why vaction time is already paid. There are 52 weeks in a calender year. Let say a person made 30,000 a year. If they worked all 52 weeks there would have made 30,000 by the end of the calender year. By law a full time employee is given paid vacation time. That vacation pay is factored into the 30,000 already. If a person is late or miss time and they dip into the vacation time the company is actually doing the employee a favor. If the company wanted to save money then that time missed would go unpaid.

They are not doing you a favor.
This is the 'fallacy' that they want workers to believe.

Because the problem with this argument is...
- If this worker makes $30,000 per year..
- WITH paid vacations.
- if s/he works a full year (all 52 weeks), but does NOT take ANY vacation..
- they STILL earn the FULL $30k in salary.

- and if workers loses job at the end of the year, they would be entitled/owed 2 weeks vacation pay ALSO.

Now this is the part where you shift the discussion to talk about 'specific' labor laws in different states, or business practices that favor employers.

(i.e. Like the infamous: 'if you don't use your vacation time or [insert medical, or dental benefit here], you lose it... There's no rollover benefits)
