Good look history channel
CHURCHHHHHHHHHNo. You've simply been misinformed.
Ordinarily I wouldn't bother to comment on this sort of misinformation but I have had two real loves: math and roman history.
The Carthaginians are Phoenician who settled the Mediterranean coast of North Africa. They simply were NOT what we would call black african. They aren't even African. Hannibal is from one of the royal families. We know exactly what Phoenicians of that time looked like. Like modern Lebanese.
This is sort of sad.
Unfortunately this is the sort of nonsense promoted by uncritical "documentaries" like Hidden Colors that are not actual scholarly studies but rather attempts at self esteem boosting. There is not attempt to be critical and any information that remotely adds to the real reason for the project(self esteem) is included as "fact". This is simply not the way real scholarship works. Facts are facts. Sadly this sort of misinformation has been promulgated so frequently and uncritical in afrocentric circles that it is becoming impossible to refute it. (I know it's true! I saw it in a documentary on great black leaders!").
Even more sadly is we have our own history and don't need to pretend to have one that isn't true! In a way it is actually playing into the hands of the white racist when you say you don't have enough of your own history and have to pretend to be Egyptians or Carthaginians.
Why is it I never see post here about the REAL black empires? Cities like Timbuktu. The Mali empire. Koumbi Saleh. Gao and Songhay. The Kaabu Empire.
And that's just West Africa (where most of us are actually descended from)
So no. Hannibal wasn't "one of us". If you want to feel pride in great Black African generals then study: Sudiata Keita, Alfa Molo Balde, or Tirmakhan Traore.
But this pretending that various non-black peoples were "us" is just poor scholarship. Even worse there because are ACTUAL black heroes to admire.
I know most of you will deny everything I wrote because your previous sources have told you otherwise. But those sources are merely self esteem boosting projects. Don't embrace a false history - we have a real one.
Lmaooo
I love when BGoL niggss be thinking they smart and then go back and forth
I read all that shit
No. Once again I am quite right on this.
for purposes of this thread you are wrong - we aren't arguing about Phoenicians- we are arguing the lineage of Hannibal -
His family was not connected to royalty nor really of the ruling class - but they were wealthy with some power and they were from Libya.
so far you have been wildly inaccurate about that
No. You've simply been misinformed.

They (the Barcas) were of the aristocracy (royals) Just because Hannibal was born in Libya doesn't turn him black (wishful thinking aside) any more than an Italian born in NY becomes an American Indian. He and ALL the Carthaginians were descended from men from Tyre who settled on the Mediterranean coast of Africa. This is NOT new information. For heaven's sake check this information on wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Carthage (also see there an ACCURATE map of their expansion in Africa - not the Fantasy one you posted )
I would like it is Hannibal was black too. I would also like it if aliens were visiting us. Both things would be pretty cool and interesting. They are just not true. I am a bit of a history nerd so I just like that time period and have studied it many years. But I find it interesting that people would seem to otherwise have little interest in history seem to get a real charge out of it, IF and ONLY IF they can use it to bolster some agenda involving self esteem. I wonder do you also care about the Bulgarian wars of Basil II? or The Samnite Wars? Have you read or are interested in reading Dio? or Polybius? Or is your interest only in proving the greatness of the Black Man and how we were "cheated" in the presentation of our history? Again I wonder where the post are about REAL black african history and great men? Why pretend to have Hannibal when we ACTUALLY have Sudiata Keita? One's agenda in studying history should at least rest on the foundation of accuracy; not wishful thinking and an agenda of self fulfillment. We have enough REAL black heroes and don't need to make things up...
Well this is rather a sad thing from the point of view of scholarship in general.Been trying to tell these fools for years. I'll let you take it from here LOL
Well this is rather a sad thing from the point of view of scholarship in general.
I mean you take a rather radical fringe idea. Hannibal (who by all evidence was a descendant of men of Trye) was REALLY a black african. Ok so who else was a black african in the settlement of the Phoenicians? Were they ALL black? really? then the people of the Levant were all black? and I guess the jews who lived south of them were black too. really? or just the Barcas? How did THAT happen? what evidence do you have for this? Oh they were ALL black on the Levant then later the Arabs came and pushed the real black men out? ( I've ACTUALLY heard this argument! - for the Levant and Egypt! - oh and everyone in history forgot about this diaspora until a few Afrocentric scholars figured it out!) Ok so where is the archeological evidence? ( none) Where are the historical documents written at the time ?(none) So somehow the Phoenicians and the Jew were really black africans and somehow everyone forgot. I'm sorry if such thing were true there would be evidence.
And please do not post pictures of black people in arabic clothing as evidence. IF you have evidence go to history department at an accredited university submit your thesis with this evidence. Get your PhD and the renown that will come from toppling previously held concept of the history of the Phoenicians.
No scholars will be mad at you. No one will try to suppress your thesis. That is NOT the way scholarship works. You will be praised and lauded. Text books will be re written. But what will NOT happen is these scholars will NOT allow an unproved fringe idea to supplant all their hard proven work just because it makes you feel good about being a black person. They will check your data where it is wrong they will point it out - they WILL NOT allow for charlatanism to enter their ranks. If you are proven wrong , accept this and go on to other work. But for heaven's sake do not start unaccredited schools of learning, make ridiculous self serving documentaries, and websites that actually make people more misinformed and dumber! We certainly have enough of that and it has lead to THIS thread.

The Barcas were not among the first families of Carthage... they were landed aristocracy not royals
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamilcar_Barca
This disagreement doesn't take away anything from the great Africans nor African kingdoms that came before and after this time
The lineage and complexion of Hannibal is still in dispute among dedicated scholars - I choose to lean towards a darker complexion for these reasons
1. lack of any documented family history prior to his father and they were from Libya
2. Carthage had berbers in command positions in their military
History has shown time and again how one from a lower class can rise above their station by becoming military officers
ok - I wasn't arguing about Phoenicians, only Hannibal, but lets discuss this... how about we start with the sarcophagus of King Eshmunazar II - a Phoenician king c. 500bc from approximately 250 years before Hamilcar
![]()
Why does this sarcophagus look so different from most other surviving sculptures of Phoenicians??
or even this one -
![]()
http://quatr.us/westasia/history/phoenicians.htm
Why even defaced, does it look so different? Why have so few of these survived? Guess it was just bad luck / coincidence
But hey - let you run with it, Phoenicians and the upper classes of Carthage all looked like modern Lebanese
I have no idea. That thing wasn't even human...So the Spinx wasnt black?
So the Spinx wasnt black?
leave the fringe and Tarriq out of this...Also there are NOT a majority of scholars disputing the Phoenician origin of the Carthaginians. There are fringe people and pseudo documentarians who do. Why you choose to side with them is pretty much the same reason that republicans who refute the majority of scientist who maintain there is global warming. Yes I'm sure you can find some crank who agrees with what you want be true; but there is a reason the majority of actual historians don't agree with the crank. And is ISNT because they are involved in a white supremacist conspiracy no matter what Tariq Nasheed says to you (LOL).
what are you basing it on that the family had to be Phoenician as there is nothing known of them before Hamilcar? But if you want to speculate the the Barcas (unlike ALL the other Phoenicians) was a black african I guess you are free to do so. I understand that it IS possible. It is also possible that he was really Chinese I guess. Or a Viking descended from a Viking settler who was blown off course. One can think of many things that COULD be true - I just wonder why you would be lead to think this? It isn't the evidence nor is it probable. It is merely wishful thinking and wild speculation. There simply doesn't even appear to be black african settlements in those northern coastal regions during the time period.
I came to that choice through deductive reasoning based on available evidence and historyYou said you "choose" to believe he was of darker complexion. I guess that makes you feel good? So go with it. But scholars of the period simply don't have your motivation.
If africa is a continent and not a nation therefore your nationality cant be african.

There is a very useful field in history called Numismatics that deals with coins as a window on history. I've seen the "hannibal" coin that afrocentric sites present as evidence of Hannibal being black. That coin showing a black face and an Elephant is NOT Hannibal. It is NOT a Carthaginian coin; it is an ETRUSCAN coin. Unfortunately the Roman gathered all the Punic coins they got a hold of and melted them down to make Roman coins - so we have no images of Hannibal. What few coins did survive look like this:The coins with Hannible's likeness says he was black.
likewise the elephant on the other side of the coin.
He was brown and NON WHITE.. to me that is all that matters. Either way if they are this fucking mad....then stay away from any more Asian or African biopics.

Yeah, I've known for a while Hannibal was not west/sub saharan "black" and more likely the shade of the famous jewish preacher from galilee
If cacs gettin hot over that depiction of Hannibal I can only imagine what they would do if they actually showcased a west african empire
So Wikipedia is your source? Negro please. The carbon dating on the coins has verified to be accurate. I suppose you believe that you believe the white washed busts are Hannibal too? There is a very useful field in history called Numismatics that deals with coins as a window on history. Make what you can of the race of these images.
I read one book dealing with numismatics - I love ancient history and have read books like Aldrete's "Gestures and Acclamations in Ancient Rome" and even I thought the numanistic book was boring...
He was brown and NON WHITE.. to me that is all that matters. Either way if they are this fucking mad....then stay away from any more Asian or African biopics.
Actually Wikipedia is an excellent source of ancient history. And I seriously doubt you are an expert enough to dispute their information in the field of Numismatics. Had you even heard of the term before this? I had, having read (a rather boring - not recommended) book on the subject about ten years ago. I mention this because I am ACTUALLY interested in ancient history. Furthermore my interest in it is NOT because I'm looking to improve my self-esteem as a black person. In fact my current studies are about the Bulgar Empire. I doubt you would have an interest unless someone alleged that Boris the First was really a black man.So Wikipedia is your source? Negro please. The carbon dating on the coins has verified to be accurate. I suppose you believe that you believe the white washed busts are Hannibal too?
I will drop some knowledge on you when I get off of Travel. And there is a reason Wikipedia is not used in research because it is not dependable or accurate.Actually Wikipedia is an excellent source of ancient history. I don't mean to be insulting but I have a reason for asking that.
It seems many here (far too many) are only interested in ancient history as a Self Esteem boosting mechanism. They seek out and accept uncritically any and all reports of information that re enforce these beliefs. They have no actual interest in those time period other than that end. This is quite frankly annoying to those who actually study the period with real interest and desire for accuracy. I can assure you if information came forward which would prove Hannibal was a black african historians would not seek to suppress it. It would be trumpeted as a great find and a marvelous addition to our knowledge. But historians are not in the job of black self esteem boosting. And scholars play hardball with fact and evidence. They don't not suffer fools gladly in their circles.
It is interesting that people who otherwise haven't the slightest interest in ancient Mediterranean history suddenly have (a misinformed) opinion on such matters. Their reason - self esteem. Which is rather sad in its own way. I mean do you think white people ( who you all refer to here rather childishly as "CAC's") should feel a great swell of pride because some person like Gauss or Newton who they never met were geniuses? You would all laugh at them.
I have noticed this desire (need?) for self esteem boosting seems to me a uniquely American phenomenon. You don't seem Blacks in African or South America or the Caribbean for that matter twisting themselves in to intellectual knots and going through torturous contortions to pretend to be Egyptians or what ever else. I don't think you would find anyone in Ghana thinking he was "really an Egyptian" Quite frankly they seem to have pride in their REAL history and don't feel the need to make one up. Only American Blacks have had their minds fucked over by whites so much they do this. It explains all the weaves and the equally sad belief that "I have Indian in MY family - you know my great great grandmother (always a great or great great grandmother by the way - name always unknown and no pictures) was a Choctaw! "
Personally I think it would be very interesting if we found out Hannibal was a black african. It would mean some amazing new information had been discovered and such a discovery would more like than not reveal a wealth of other information that you (probably) would not even be interested in about the period. Like something about trade routes and expansion of taxation blah blah blah. But without evidence (other than a desire for self esteem boosting) the null hypotheses is that the Carthaginian generals were well... Carthaginian.
And I assure you ,every time historians encounter this argument heads are shaken and eyes rolled...
even budweiser had it right back in the day
