Props on this thread and to everybody who contributed (minus the bullshit) this was very powerful as here in the tri-state we going thru the initial stages of gangland drama, funny thing is i used to visit family in chicago every summer back in the day and used to diss them for having gangs like around my way we rep for our blocks or projects but all in the name of getting money i guess the joke was on me cuz you come out to newark and you bound to end up in the wrong hood wearing the wrong colors.

If memory serves, Truth is originally from a nice quiet part of Jersey so he really doesnt give a shit about you pullin his Bay card. He aint from there either. So you aint likely hurtin his feelings none.
This movie here is about that entire time period in the late 70s when the transition went down. BEAUTIFUL film about beautiful black folks in LA just trying to make it in the face of poverty and racism. Right up there with Wattstax.
As I hear it, the NY/NJ 5%ers used to fuck with the Latino dudes in jail, who got down with the Latin Kings out of Chicago--when the LKs got strong over time, the next wave of black prisoners had to form under a new flag which ended up being the Blood concept, imported out of LA.
I have no idea how Crips got started in NY but I suppose it was an answer to the Bloods, who were an answer to the LKs, who were an answer to...etc.

White men started the Hell's Angels and them cats be banging on the Monguls and other white gangs, killing each other in the street but you never hear about that on tv. When a hispanic or black person does it, its blown up everywhere.
Right down the road from me in Fayetteville, NC a Aryan Gang Member killed two black people for no reason in the late nineties, how many documentaries was made on them crackas? The original gang was the Ku Klux Klan and other local racists groups and that forced blacks and mexicans to protect their families and form gangs.
I grew up with bloods and crips in lil ol Raleigh NC and it wasnt that serious, but now its all you hear on the news Bloods killing people in their own driveways, shooting people in the mall, etc.
Human beings were made to worship God and when they dont, they'll find other things to worship, cars, women, money, gangs, the list goes on. Thats why gang members are so willing to die for their gang because its their god...
