After watching season 1, i went and downloaded/listened to the audiobooks. As far as the books, you should still start at the first one.
As far as book 4 & 5 goes, they were originally one book that was split. Book4 wasn't considered as "exciting" as the previous book, since alot of POV characters and their, cliffhangers did not make an appearance (until the next book that came out a few years later), also a number of new POV characters and backgrounds were introduced. It still was an interesting addition to the series tho.
