Game Of Thrones season 2: The night is dark and full of terror................

Gotcha! I sure will. Mainly I needed to understand where everyone was and what the characters had to do with each other. My main interests were:

1) How did Robert become King?
2) Who were Daenery's people?
2.1) How and why did they become exhiled?
2.2) how in the fuck were they in they in a hot dry area while it snowed in other places during the same time period? (this is why I needed a map:cool:)
3) What was the deal with the Night Walkers and where did they come from?
4) What was the Stark family story?
4.1) What's the story about the North (this is why I needed a map:cool:)
5) What are the family trees?

Wiki got me spun up on all of this to give me a concrete understanding and some more. Maybe a little too much

But I'm good now. I'm just gonna ride this out. There are some characters that I don't quite get yet but once the time comes, I'll ask.

1.Him and Ned rebel against the Mad King aka Daenerys Targaryen father. Her father was like Joffrey but alot worst..

2.Viserys Targaryen was the next person to take his father place but since Robert wanted to kill every single Targaryen,he had to flee to Essos...Dany was a baby(I think) when that happened....Keep in mind that the Targaryen had ruled for generations

4.?

4.1

Just a simple map but in the other Game of Thrones thread their is a better version of it the world.

5.The list is very long but you can check out this site

http://towerofthehand.com/books/houses.html

smoke knows alot more than I do since Im still in the second book but I hope this helps....

1, 2, 2.1 - Ned's sister, the love of Roberts life goes missing and is presumed to have been kidnapped by Prince Rhaegar Targaryen. Robert then goes to war and the Targaryens are all killed (Jamie Lannister kills "Mad" King Aerys Targaryen - we'll learn why later) except for young Prince Viserys, his infant sister Daenerys, and Maester Aemon (of the Nights Watch).

2.2 - Westeros is a huge kingdom, and seasons don't change in the same manner there that they do in the real world. Seasons may last a few months to years and years. The North is frozen while the South is not.

3. - All we know about the Walkers and the Others is that they come from the North, beyond the wall. But think about this, the other's have the power of ice, while the dragons have the power of fire. I can see a serious battle coming.

And killing all of Robert's "bastards" isn't to eliminate their claim to the throne, it is to solidify Joffrey's claim. With Ned's letter to Stannis (the older brother of RENLY) telling him that all of Cersei's children are by Jamie and not Robert, and offering Robert's outside children as proof of this, Joffrey would lose the throne and Stannis would be named the next king.

And some may consider the following a SPOILER, so read @ your own risk:

Author George R.R. Martin was asked if he had a resolution or ending to the seemingly endless conflict. He replied that the end would be a cloud of dust or snow being driven by the wind across a vast graveyard full of tombstones.

Damn! That's one hell of an ending!

:smh:

My understanding is that the European or Australian stream of the show comes out several days before the US one. So if you choose you can be ahead all season.

Nice! Thanks for the info

ok...so...for real....where y'all watch the 2nd episode?

I caught a good putlocker link earlier today but all the streaming hosts are being reported and taken down right away these days. Can't find a working link right now. I'm sure if you dig around you can find a download (maybe even right here on BGOL). Sorry.

I watched the 1st season and then read the 1st book in it's entirety. Outside of a few noticeable differences I thought the two went hand in hand perfectly. The book filled in questions I had from the show, and the show helped illustrate the book.

I even thought the show did a small number of things better than the book, most noticeably Ned's encounter with Jaime Lannister outside of Littlefinger's brothel. That being said, I got ahead of the show by reading the second book, and w/o revealing any spoilers I have to say; I was a bit disappointed with the first episode of season two.

The pacing seems a little off and it seems like they may rush through things a bit too quickly this season. By contrast I felt the pacing of the first season was perfect. Oh well, still an awesome show and I hope I'm wrong about the second season ...

Maybe someone can explain this to me. In the beginning of the show Dany is walking through the desert with just a small band of Dothraki. I think they only had like 4 horses and about 20-30 people. What happened to the rest of the Dothraki hoard? Did they splinter from the group after Drago died? Did they all die from exposure in the desert? Did they just refuse to follow a women and decided to go their own way? The Dothraki horde was a great, fearsome army...what the hell happened to them?

I think the brethren hit most of this on the head for you but I'd like to add one more aspect of insight gained from the book. Dothraki blood riders were soul bound to their Khal. When the Khal died, they were supposed to mourn and properly bury the Khal. After this they were supposed to off themselves so as to follow the Khal in death as they did in life.

While true that the Blood riders and the vast majority of Drogo's army refused to follow a Khal that could not ride, His rider's also saw their own deaths on the horizon with Drogo's worsening health. This is why they reacted so violently to Danaerys, the Maegi, and Ser Jorah Mormont.

Ultimately what they did was get the heck outta dodge before Drogo officially died so that they wouldn't be forced to kill themselves. Aside from that, they couldn't agree on who should be Khal so at least three of them proclaimed themselves Khal and split Drogo's Khalasar among them.

Dany was left with the slaves, her servants, personal guard, and Ser Jorah. Dany gave them all the choice of leaving but they pledged fealty to her after they witnessed the birth of her dragons.

I think the reason why it looks rushed is because the story they are jumping ahead in the book while going in order at the same time....I saw the episode 2 a few hours ago and they are at the part where Im at in the book...And plus they have to tell the story in 10 episodes...

Its going to be interesting and see how they are going to do next season because "A Storm of Swords" is a large book and having just one season of that book will not due it justice...

Yeah I read the spoilers to that book also :(

Do yall think having all these character's going to kill the show :dunno:

How are they going to deal with the Stark children for later seasons?

Looks like their will be a season 3...

Hundreds of years ago, King Mern IX Gardener formed an alliance with King Loren Lannister of the Westerlands to stave off the imminent threat of Aegon The Conquerer of House Targaryen. Aegon The Conquerer had already successfully defeated or gained the fealty of King Hoare of the Riverlands, Edmyn Tully of Riverrun, and Lord Vickon Greyjoy of Pyke. King Mern IX and Loren Lannister brought some 55,000 troops, including 5,000 mounted knights, to the battlefield, against Aegon's 10,000 or so soldiers

The overwhelming superiority of numbers initially succeeded and the Targaryen army began to retreat. In desperation Aegon unleashed all three dragons at once to attack the opposition. More than four thousand men were burned alive, including King Mern, the last of his line, before they surrendered. King Loren bent the knee and was allowed to remain Lord of Casterly Rock. With Mern dead, Aegon accepted the surrender of Harlen Tyrell, Mern's steward, and appointed him overlord of the Reach.

Past History:

Hundreds of years ago, Aegon Targaryen and his sister-wives Visenya (far right) and Rhaenys (far left), riding the great dragons Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes respectively, led a small contingent of retainers and troops to land at the mouth of the Blackwater Rush. They built a modest wooden redoubt atop the tallest hill overlooking the river, and made their plans. Seven kingdoms existed in Westeros, and Aegon wanted to conquer them all.

After successfully conquering virtually all of Westeros with the aide of his dragons he gained the fealty of nearly all of the major houses, Aegon announced the founding of a new castle. The new capital city would be known as King's Landing. This was the same site where he and his sisters initially landed on the shores of Westeros. Aegon The Conquerer retired to a relatively peaceful rule shortly after. He melted the swords of those who had opposed him into a throne, the Iron Throne, as a reminder of their submission to the Targaryens.

2e5qh5c.jpg

Hundreds of years ago, In the east, Orys Baratheon, Aegon The Conqueror's alleged bastard half-brother, led an army against Storm's End. Argilac the Arrogant, the Storm King, soon proved the truth of his name. Rather than take shelter behind the walls of his fortress, he took the field, confident of victory. Orys destroyed his army, slew Argilac and captured Storm's End. He also took Argilac's daughter, his house motto and his lands as his own. For Orys' remarkable achievement, Aegon named him the founder of House Baratheon and legitimised him.

Fast-forward hundreds of years later, In the Year of False Spring, Lord Whent of Harrenhal hosted a great tourney. Prince Rhaegar became the champion of the tournament, but rather name his own wife the Queen of Love and Beauty as was traditional, he named Lyanna Stark of Winterfell. A few months later Rhaegar snatched Lyanna from Winterfell and took her south. Her father and brother, Rickard and Brandon, went to King's Landing to demand justice. Instead, Aerys had them burned alive for questioning the authority of the Iron Throne.

Aerys' act in executing Rickard and Brandon Stark and holding Lyanna prisoner triggered a bloody uprising against Targaryen rule. As a result Jon Arryn of the Vale, House Tully, along with the now new Lord of Winterfell Eddard Stark, and his close friend Robert Baratheon and future husband of Lyanna Stark raised their banners and went to war. The Greyjoys and Lannisters refused to send aide to Kings Landing in order to assist the Targaryens. As rebel armies marched on Kings Landing Rhaegar Targaryen along with an army at his back met Roberts Baratheons forces head on at the battle of the Trident. There, Robert caved in Rhaegar's chest plate with his battle axe killing him instantly. When Lannister forces finally arrived to help the Targaryens they began to sack Kings Landing. Ser Jaime Lannister took the opportunity to slay The Mad King and thus ending the rebellion. When Eddard Starks forces finally arrived he found Jaime sitting on the iron throne. Eddard would later find his sister Lyanna dying from unknown causes in the foothills of Dorne. With Lyanna dead, Robert married Cersei Lannister.

Prior to the arrival of the Andals, the Vale was ruled by the First Men under the Mountain Kings. Ser Artys Arryn slew the last of the Mountain Kings and the Arryns became Kings of Mountain and Vale, according to semi-canon sources some six thousand years ago. They renamed the land the Vale of Arryn, and their kings wore the Falcon Crown. They submitted to Aegon the Conqueror and House Targaryen, and became lords paramount of the Vale and Wardens of the East, a title that they have always held. During Robert's Rebellion, they supported Robert Baratheon.

Past History

Several years after Robert took the throne, Lord Balon Greyjoy of Pyke declared himself King of the Iron Islands, raising the standard of rebellion. His brothers Euron and Victarion Greyjoy attacked and burned the Lannister fleet at rest in Lannisport, as well as raiding Seagard and along the coast. Robert and Eddard moved swiftly to put down the rebellion. Stannis Baratheon and Paxter Redwyne's fleets joined forces and crushed the Greyjoy fleet at the Battle of Fair Isle, allowing Robert to land substantial forces on the Iron Islands unimpeded.

Great siege ships battered a hole in the walls of Pyke, and the sellsword-priest Thoros of Myr led the way through the breach with a burning sword, Ser Jorah Mormont close behind him. The fighting was bitter and hard, but eventually Balon was forced to capitulate. He was badly outnumbered, and his two older sons were killed during the war. Balon Greyjoy re-swore fealty and his only surviving son Theon was given to Eddard Stark to raise as a ward and hostage against his father's good behavior.

Past History

Riverrun.jpg

Several years ago, Maelys Blackfyre, commander of the Golden Company, had made common cause and alliance with eight other exiled or outcast rulers of the Free Cities. They agreed to pool their armies and help one another achieve what they could not alone. In the Free Cities they became known as the Band of Nine, but in Westeros were called the Ninepenny Kings. The Ninepenny Kings helped Alequo Adarys conquer Tyrosh and become its new Archon, then they invaded the Stepstone islands and began massing their forces for an invasion of Westeros. Before they could mount the assault, they were hit with a pre-emptive strike. A strong army of Westerosi troops landed on the Stepstones and defeated the Ninepenny Kings. Hoster and Brynden Tully won great acclaim, as did Lord Baelish of the Fingers, but the greatest honour fell to Ser Barristan Selmy, who faced Maelys in single combat. Maelys was known as 'The Monstrous', for it was said that he had consumed his own twin in the womb and had since sprouted a vestigial second head growing out of his shoulder. Using his skill at arms, Barristan killed Maelys, last of the Blackfyre Pretenders.

For his leal service, Barristan was named to the Kingsguard of King Jaehaerys. Elsewhere, the Golden Company, bereft of a cause, returned to the Free Cities and continued fighting for hire. And Hoster Tully made a friend for life of Lord Baelish, later agreeing to raise his son Petyr at Riverrun for a time.

Past History:

125izh3.jpg

Approximately eight thousand years before Aegon The Conqueror, in the midst of a great winter that lasted for years, a terrible darkness fell across Westeros and the east. The Long Night lasted a generation and laid waste to much of the world through famine and terror. In the midst of this darkness a race of apparent demons emerged from the uttermost north, wielding razor-thin swords of ice and raising the dead to fight the living. The children of the forest and their allies, the First Men, fought valiantly against them, but were driven southwards by their advance.

The 'Others', as these demons were called, were eventually checked when it was discovered that weapons made of dragonglass could kill them. A great hero, who in the eastern tradition is known as Azor Ahai, led the war against the Others wielding his sword of fire, Lightbringer. Eventually the Others were driven back into the Lands of Always Winter. Brandon Stark, known as Bran the Builder, raised a great Wall of ice, gravel and magic, stretching one hundred leagues from the Gorge to the Shivering Sea to prevent the Others coming again. Brandon Stark was declared the First King in the North.

The fortress of Winterfell as well as Storm's End were built by Bran the Builder at this time, and the Night's Watch was founded to maintain a watch on the Wall. A later prophecy claimed that the Others would return and Azor Ahai, the Prince that was Promised, would be reborn to lead the fight against them.

House Lannister

Past History:

LordTywinsCunning.jpg

Shortly after the War of the Ninepenny Kings, Jaehaerys died and his son Aerys II took the throne. Aerys' reign began with great promise. He made the young, dynamic Tywin Lannister of Casterly Rock his Hand, and the realm prospered. The people were happy, the last rival claimants to the throne were dead and there was no prospect of war on the horizon.

As it happened, this very period of peace unsettled Aerys. He began hearing that it was Tywin who was responsible for peace, not him, and even tore out the tongue of one of Tywin's knights, Ser Ilyn Payne, for saying this in his hearing. When Lord Darklyn of Duskendale refused to pay his taxes, King Aerys disdained asking Tywin to handle it, instead leading his own troops to punish Darklyn. Instead, Aerys was captured and left imprisoned in the castle for several months. Tywin besieged the castle and Ser Barristan Selmy managed to rescue Aerys, but the experience left Aerys maddened with rage, fear and paranoia. He had the Darklyns burned alive.

Back in King's Landing, Aerys began seeing threats in every corner. He disdained marrying his son Rhaegar to Tywin's daughter, Cersei, saying that a king did not marry his heir to a servant. Instead, he married Rhaegar to Princess Elia Martell of Dorne. He also sent a force of knights into the Kingswood to put down an insurrection by the Kingswood Brotherhood. After Jaime Lannister showed great promise during this incident, Aerys named him to the Kingsguard. This meant that Jaime gave his claims to Tywin's castle and title in favour of his little brother, the ugly, stunted and deformed Tyrion. This insult was one too many for Tywin and he resigned the Handship and returned to Casterly Rock.

dorne-sunspear.jpg

Hundreds of years ago, Aegon The Conqueror successfully gained the fealty of every kingdom within Westeros except one, the kingdom of Dorne. Aegon took his army through the Red Mountains, but the Dornish, having learned of the Field of Fire, refused to give battle. Instead, they made hit-and-run attacks on Aegon's army, burning their supplies and melting away before the dragons could be brought to bear. A thousand pinpricks did what a single pitched battle could not, and Aegon withdrew from Dorne, agreeing to respect their independence.

However, several years later upon Aegon III's death, his son Daeron I inherited the throne. Daeron was a great knight, skilled in battle and a noted strategist and tactician. Daeron had long felt that the continued independence of Dorne represented unfinished business for the Targaryens, and upon his ascension he vowed to rectify his ancestor's mistake. He assembled a large army and led it through the Red Mountains. The Dornish armies assembled to contest the passage, both through field battles (now viable that the Targaryen dragons were gone) and their traditional guerrilla attacks, but Daeron was prepared for these tactics. Dorne fell and Aegon accepted the Submission of Sunspear. Flushed from victory, he placed Lord Tyrell of the Reach in command of Dorne and returned to King's Landing.

This proved to be an unwise choice, as the Reach and Dorne had been mortal enemies for a thousand years. Tyrell was assassinated less than a fortnight into the job and the Dornish threw off the Targaryen yoke. Daeron I rushed back to re-conquer Dorne, but was killed in the fighting. His cousin Aemon the Dragonknight, one of the Kingsguard, was captured and thrown into a pit as well. With Daeron dead with no issue, his brother Baelor became king. Pious and holy, Baelor walked the Boneway barefoot to make peace with Dorne. Aemon was released and Baelor made a marriage pact, marrying his second cousin Daeron (the later Daeron II) to Princess Myriah Martell of Dorne to symbolise the new peace.

We’ve previously announced the news that Bantam will be publishing a poster map collection titled The Lands of Ice and Fire (Pre-order: Amazon US, Amazon UK) that will provide the most extensive look at the setting yet, all of it based on George R.R: Martin’s own map designs. It’s presently scheduled to be published in October of this year.

Now we’ve some more information we can share, courtesy of Random House :

The centerpiece of this gorgeous collection is guaranteed to be a must-have for any fan: the complete map of the known world, joining the lands of the Seven Kingdoms and the lands across the Narrow Sea for the first time in series history. But this is just one of many unique maps that aren’t available anywhere else. There is an alternate version that tracks the movements of the series’ protagonists throughout their vast world, along with more detailed versions of the western, middle, and eastern thirds of the world; a full map of Westeros, combining North and South; one of the Dothraki Sea and the Red Wastes; and the Braavos city map. And here, too, are fan favorites detailing everything from urban sprawl to untamed wilds: maps of King’s Landing; The Wall and Beyond the Wall; the Free Cities; and Slaver’s Bay, Valyria, and Sothyros.

The maps will be drawn by the experienced, freelance cartographer Jonathan Roberts. Having seen his preliminary layout of Braavos based on a map from GRRM that was done quite early in writing A Feast for Crows and was consequently not entirely consistent with what he described in the novels, Roberts definitely knows what he’s about. Fans will have nothing to worry about as far as the quality of the presentation and illustration goes.

A later prophecy claimed that the Others would return and Azor Ahai, the Prince that was Promised, would be reborn to lead the fight against them.

this part from the Starks past history has me wondering which stark child is the reincarnation of Azor Ahai. It also mentions the sword Lightbringer and Stannis supposedly wields it. It goes into this later in the books so I will just stop there.

Yeah I read the spoilers to that book also :(

Do yall think having all these character's going to kill the show :dunno:

How are they going to deal with the Stark children for later seasons?

Looks like their will be a season 3...

Interesting questions. As long as they keep the writing on point and continue to follow the books as closely as possible (with their necessary constraints) I think the show will remain strong.

And to your other point, Yes Storm of Swords AKA Season 3 is a tough pill to swallow. :(:smh::(

I was about to stop reading after what went down in Storm of swords but I do not know how far you read books 4 and 5 so I will not spoil it for you.

they're definitely related...but he's the great great uncle or something like that...

Maester Aemon

133479Maester_Aemon.jpg

Third son of King Maekar I Targaryen, Aemon was sent to the Citadel according to the wishes of his grandfather King Daeron II Targaryen. At this time, King Daeron II had four grown sons, three with sons of their own, and so felt that having too many potential Targaryen heirs was as dangerous as having too few. He earned the academic title of Maester. Aemon was summoned to court in the year of the Great Council. He was offered the crown, quietly, but refused, ceding rule to his younger brother, Aegon. He then decided to serve as a black brother of the Night's Watch for fear that he may be used in a plot to usurp his brother.

Maester Aemon is portrayed by Peter Vaughan in the HBO adaptation of the books.

Good look. I remember when he broke this news to Jon Snow at the Wall...I thought what he described would've put him that far up the family tree, but was like..."nahh, I must've misheard that"....what, is he like 120 years old?

dope ass recap smokedacane dope.

It took a long ass time to compile all that back story information too.:yawn2:. And that is just the major houses. I might do some of the smaller houses that play a role as well sometime later.

I did as best as I could to be thorough enough just so people who were interested behind some of the history would be aware of it.

House Baelish rules over one of the smallest areas in the region. House Baelish meager beginnings started when Petyr Baelish great-grandfater was knighted as a result of his great ability in combat defending the House Corbray of the Vale.

Petyr Baelish father along with Hoster Tully and Barristan the Bold were responsible for launching a preemptive strike against the Ninepenny Kings before they could invade Westeros and defeated them. Petyr Baelish father and Hoster Tully became lifelong friends. At the behest of Petyr father he encouraged that Petyr Baelish be allowed to live in Riverrun for a time. While in Riverun Petyr Baelish became close friends with Catelyn Tully and at one point was madly in love with her.

He attempted to fight Catelyn Tully husband to be Brandon Stark in combat in order to gain her hand but lost. After the defeat Petyr Baelish returned to the Vale. If that's the highlight for you you're watching the wrong show man.

Basically...Spartacus has dumbed niggas down into expecting a sword fight every 2 minutes I guess...anyways this show is grand...the excitement of what's to come had me anxious watching the 1st ep to the point that I could hardly stay seated...Littlefinger got owned something terrible...power is power  great 2 eps so far...lemme read the comments now and jump in the convo

I'm diggin' that new redhead bitch. Her character is hardbody. To me she obviously has connections to other dimensions or realms that the men can comprehend. You can't fuck with her because she's protected by the spirits as shown by the dude who tried to poison her but ended up dying and she STILL drank that shit in front of him as he died.

Ya I had to rewire my brain watching this show and remind myself basically anything can happen and anyone can get it...but ya it was funny how she watched that old fool poison himself then saw him bleed and let him know she saw and still sipped it in his face like what
