G1 Owners Unite! The Official G1/Android Thread..News/Apps/Features All In Here

Pretty much. Google has no beef with Modders just don't use the closed apps...I'm pretty sure if modders create the blur theme b4 moto launches their phones they would get one from moto...hell they got one from palm for creating a web os theme.
Google likely doesn't give a fuck about google apps but its the info that comes from other sources that google has to cover.
Google isn't telling modders to stop just don't use google apps.
Hell they released the ANDROID OS code so if you wanted to u could make ur own android and port it to a phone u want only problem is u won;t have google apps. Thats y the market has maps and other stuff. U could create a google phone without any google products and google wouldnt care.
Hell if I was skilled at programming i'd do that
folks need to relax on the fuck google and fuck android shit, the modder in question even agrees based on stuff i read u can mod just dont use google apps b/c they are closed and were never included in the OS code release.

i feel ya, but how do u install another rom if u have to sign in to gmail and gmail wont be allowed by developers of private roms?

gmail i dont think is the issue i think including google maps caused the issue...if u look at maps.google.com their info comes from another source. gmail is google. and he added the new market which wasn't to be out until oct. he shoulda looked at who provided the content other than google. the maps thing i can see setting things off b/c google gets the data for maps from another company. and i think he included apps from other developers that may want payment.

I aint fucking with ROOTING this is the most UNconsistant hack i've ever seen.. some say it will make ya phone run smoother, some say it wont.. some say you will lose vital features if you ROOT..
all i wanna do it remove the pre-installed apps that came with the phone but thats not enough reason for me to root it. :smh:

o ok that's kewl, ya i like the new market, but they also said Cyanogen has features that's suppose to be released on an android phone next year, also his last version is suppose to be Donut, i don't think they were planning on releasing that update until early next year---which is a shame that they take so long releasing shyt. But, if he can keep gmail i would be happy. I know there's probably a loophole to get google maps. Not a huge deal, I haven't used google maps since I got CoPilot! I do like showing off streetview some times but I can live without, but gmail is a must. Well I hope we hear from Cyanogen this week about his plans.

"what u talkn bout willis"

which hack r u referring to? what's inconsistent? I have flashed 3 different Cyanogen roms, right now i'm running the test rom 4.1.11.1 his last non test, stable rom was 4.0.4, that ran good, but so far this 4.1.11.1 is running excellent, super fkn fast, no lags or anything yet. u and anybody who roots need to read and ask advice on xda or somewhere. some people have problems because they install different themes and programs that the developers said don't use with their roms. Some people encounter probs because they didn't do the full swipe before flashing. The first time I flashed I had a lot of force close, it was because i had ahome running with ted's theme and something else, i deleted ahome and the problem went away. Cyanogen doesn't like when u use certain themes with his roms, and stated don't ask any questions or make any complaints if u have certain themes and shyt installed. Also some improperly hacked apk's can cause force closes. I don't know any "vital" features I lost when I rooted. i mean u lose myfav but u can download the apk to put it right back on your phone. Who needs myfavs now with all the cooler apps like atakephone, contacts sidebar, etc.... I have unlimited talk so myfavs is irrelevant, even b4 i got unlimited talk, i set up myfavs online and simply had those contacts in my contacts widget just like myfavs. U can't download paid apps after u root.....by why would u????? All them shyts is online for free-----I've been taking request but I guess everybody has all the apps they need. I can name 30 benefits off top to justify rooting, but if your cool with the stock version, stick to it. Us rooters have features that wont be on the stock version to the next update in early 2010. Even with that update, you wont have a faster phone, better reception, a tone of apps for root users only, audiohacks, multi, a ton load of space on the phone, all these widgets, 10 fkn home screens, a bunch of new settings options, etc.............If the stock version is doing what u need it to do stick with it. My stock version was gettn low on space, it was moving sluggish, it was boring me and I was hearing about all these apps for rooted g1's so that's y i rooted.

Looks like Cyanogen has work out his issue with Google:

Cyanogen's Facebook post: HERE

"The last few days have been difficult. What has become clear now is that the Android Open Source Project is a framework. It’s licensed in such a way so that anyone can take it, modify it to their needs, and redistribute it as they please. Android belongs to everyone. This also means that big companies likes Google, HTC, Motorola, and whomever else can add their own pieces to it and share these pieces under whatever license they choose.

I’ve made lots of changes myself to the AOSP code, and added in code from lots of others. Building a better Droid, right?

The issue that’s raised is the redistribution of Google’s proprietary applications like Maps, GTalk, Market, and YouTube. These are not part of the open source project and are only part of “Google Experience” devices. They are Google’s intellectual property and I intend to respect that. I will no longer be distributing these applications as part of CyanogenMod. But it’s OK. None of the go-fast stuff that I do involves any of this stuff anyway. We need these applications though, because we all rely so heavily on their functionality. I’d love for Google to hand over the keys to the kingdom and let us all have it for free, but that’s not going to happen. And who can blame them?

There are lots of things we can do as end-users and modders, though, without violating anyones rights. Most importantly, we are entitled to back up our software. Since I don’t work with any of these closed source applications directly, what I intend to do is simply ship the next version of CyanogenMod as a “bare bones” ROM. You’ll be able to make calls, MMS, take photos, etc. In order to get our beloved Google sync and applications back, you’ll need to make a backup first. I’m working on an application that will do this for you.

The idea is that you’ll be able to Google-ify your CyanogenMod installation, with the applications and files that shipped on YOUR device already. Or, you can just use the basic ROM if you want. It will be perfectly functional if you don’t use the Google parts. I will include an alternative app store (SlideMe, or AndAppStore, not decided yet) with the basic ROM so that you can get your applications in case you don’t have a Google Experience device.

I’ll have more updates soon as I get all the code hammered out.

Thanks for all the support thru all of this."

good info playa! So do I understand correctly that Cyanogen's next rom wont be able to have gtalk, market, google maps BUT, he's makn a program that will allow u to put it back on the phone once u flash his newest rom??? is that correct? If so that's cool, I can live without those programs but they are good to have and I think i'd feel a little weird not having them available. Well glad to see the party isn't over, Cyanogen's gonna keep droppn shyt and I know there will be loopholes to get around shyt.

Anybody know if the g1 has an app like blackberry's 2d bar code scanner?

the g1 has had the the 2d bar code scanner since it came out...
barcode scanner app is in the market for the g1...

where you been ???

--------------------

and on the this issue with Cyanogen getting the C&D from google, i say let them take further action.. Google doesnt want any negative press about android.. as soon as i get a letter saying i have to go to court, im calling every major news channel.. cause the C&D is bullshit, all its really about it leaking the new market, they just dont want to admit to it..

yeah i've had shopsavy and barcode scanner since the early days of the phone, I think i even mentioned shopsavy earlier in this post. I just didn't know u could scan a qr code and it can take u to websites and shyt. I thought it was merely for shopping and prices. I see the market has several 2d apps.

Well i'd go to tmobile's official forums they are much more laidback to newbies than xda. But on youtube they have videos on how to 1 click root. U can search google on 1 click rooting for the g1. It's simple, very simple, it did take me a couple of hours because i didn't do swipe and do things properly, but do the cyanogen recovery, and nandroid backup first. I know it sounds like a lot but I just left the bar watching some Sunday football, so i'm a little buzzed right now, but trust me, i knew nothing about smart phone rooting and shyt a month ago, but after watching tutorials, asking a few questions and shyt, i'm running a very smooth phone, that I think i'll put against any phone on the market right now. My only complaint is tmobile's 3g coverage. But, that's got better after my root but still not as fast as my friends who have verizon and xingular. But far as apps and price the g1 is the shyt. Rooting made me keep this phone and is the bomb, but at the end of the day if your happy with stock stick to it. But, if u want 2 root which I tell u, if u do it right, you wont be disappointed. The 1 click root is great because u avoid a lot of the the shyt that can make u brick the phone, it's quciker, easier, and safer.

So, how do you get free apps?

where u been?

droidappz, ipmart and a couple of other sites, I and others have posted in this thread. I've said several times for those who don't want to search, I'm taking request.

I really don't know what appz to look for. I'm the type if I see an App I think could be useful I'd download it. That's why I asked you to suggest a few you like.

my fault playa, i thought u were the guy who asked me where I been? that's y i replied with where u been....ummm I just search different sites, lookn for apps. I read the description to see what the apps actually do and I may read a couple of replies to see if it really works. Go on droidappz forums, they have several pages on paid apps. Most of the apps have the link to cryket which will give u a description of what the app actually does. I don't know where to start far as posting because I don't know what your looking for from your phone. Some like games, I don't. I like enhancements, dope apps that improve the phones performance, appearance, features, settings, that makes task more convenient, I also like security shyt---just incase i lose my phone or if a girl wants to snoop through my messages, contacts or anything. I like technology type stuff that many would have never thought a phone would be capable of doing, but I don't know what to post for you guys that's y i just take request. I'm also disappointed with the little updates going on in this post.

here

http://droidappz.org/forumdisplay.php?f=9

on that first page they have some of my favorite apps, mybackup pro the latest edition, Copilot Live 8 (the best gps for the g1, it is precise, voice turn by turn, gives traffic reports, nearest gas stations, restaurants, etc......)text widget, I mean right now I stopped at page 17, i just go through all the threads and see what apps interest me. Don't know when i'll finish going through all those post. I also find apps on ipmart and a couple of other spots i've found. I know how to search google for apps also that's y i said if ya'll need anything let me know. I rarely get apps because other say its hot, i get what I will use, that's y i rather take request than just post paid apps the many may have know desire for.

I'll start posting some of my favorite apps this week.

Update on Cyanogen 4.1.11.1 after 1.5 days of use, this btch is smooth and fast! My only complaint which I had already read about before the flash was some battery issues. It's 9:14pm i took it off the charger around 3pm and it's already down to 64%. Right now, I have everything on (bluetooth, gps, wifi, 3g, sync, etc.....) So I guess i'll use power management to tweak a few things, also use toggle settings to turn a few things off and see if that helps.

is your phone rooted? care to offer assistance to get me running cyan or whatever its called?

This is everything you'll need made easy!!!

I hope this helps.

theunlockr: is a site that has step by step You Tube video instruction on how to root, unroot, and add ROM's to your phone. It also has the download for the Amon RA recovery image (which I like a lot better than Cyanogen recovery image 1.4.)

T-Mobile Android Forum: Just as Royal stated, this is a great site for newbs. It also has step by step instructions. I suggest you read through this site a few times and become familiar with all the terms. There's a lot of good info to read through. I can honestly say you'll get a better understanding on what's going on after reading through this forum.

I have a MyTouch 3G and I linked up the ROMz, Appz, and Recovery Images, I've tried so far. If you watch the Videos on theunlockr.com and read through the T-Mobile, it's virtually impossible to brick your phone.

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4EDEBHCL

Recovery Image: Cyanogen 1.4
Amon RA Ver.1.2.1G (MyTouch 3G 32B ONLY!!!!)

Flash Recovery Image: flashrec-20090815.apk

ROMz:
Cyanogen 4.0.4 (Most Stable)
Cyanogen 4.1.11.1
Drizzy Drake Rogers Ver.1.4r1 (Hero ROM)
JACHeroSki Ver.1.7r2 (Hero ROM)

Appz:
Audio Hack
Close Everything 2
A Take Phone
TasKiller Full
Slide Unlocker 2 1.8

Unroot Image: sappimg.nbh (MyTouch 3G 32B Only)

Warning: As I've already stated, I have a MyTouch. All the Appz, ROMz, and the Cyanogen Recovery file will work on the G1 as well. The "recovery-RAv1.2.1G" Recovery file and "sappimg.nbh" file are made for the MyTouch 3G 32B. If you don't have a MyTouch 32B "DO NOT USE THESE 2 IMAGES!!!!" If you flash your phone with these images, you could possibly brick your phone and I will laugh at you!!! Do yourself a huge favor, and read through the sites I suggested.

You have been warned.

i'm lookn for this Ultimate Sms its kind of new I think, seems dope though. U can customize sms tones, have different alerts for different contacts, password protect your sms, unread reminder, etc....

The thing I really want for SMS is something to let me know when the text has been read (a read report). I know if u click view report it'll let u know the message is pending or has been received, but just because it's been received doesn't mean it's been read. I know with mms it'll send me a report that my message has been read, wonder why they don't have it for sms.

what's some new tight apps ya'll fkn with right now?

Im using Bluetooth File Transfer: Very useful for sending files to ya PC, other ppl's celly or vice versa. Phone doesnt have to be rooted

MountUSB - its pretty much like a widget for connecting to USB. Just hook up ya USB then touch the button and BAM!!!

Quick Uninstaller: self explainitory

Walkie Talkie: Pretty much uses your gmail acct. to send messages to other ppl with the same app. reminds me of boost mobile in a way but pretty dope

Move Cache for Root: Moves the cache of Browser, Market, Streetview, Gmail, Steel to your SD card freeing up mor internal memory. ONLY USE IF ROOTED OR U WILL FUCK UP YO PHONE.

Pandora Radio: Pretty much self explainitory..and works good with Edge so u can save battery life

AdFree Android for Root users: All those annoying ass admob ads and shit are pretty much GONE with this app.

Univailable: Busy at work, hooping, Fuckin...whatever...set this auto SMS sender up for when u dont wanna be bothered. Custom messages for all or individuals

iMusic: Basically a Ares/Bearshare/napster or whatever you wanna call it for G1. Preview the song and then download it on the spot

Thas all i got so far

Anyone get the "Official" OTA 1.6 update yet? They started sending it out yesterday.

I'm running Cyanogen 4.1.11.1 (without a theme) which, I believe is basically 1.6 but better. If you've gotten what do you think? What new features does it have?

Since Cyan is gonna be doing "Bare Bones" MODs i prolly wont be fucking with it no more. True enough he's gonna make a way u can use your google features but iono. I may go back to 1.6 and see what its about

Cyanogen 4.1.11.1 is the last mod Cyanogen created before the C&D order from Google.

After reading the reviews on the 1.6 update Cyanogen's 4.1.11.1 has the same features plus more. For instance, the 1.6 update does not have multi-touch, Cyanogen 4.1.11.1 does.

What phone y'all upgrading to? I'm goin with the Cliq I think I may wait til the end of oct n see whats coming for TMO...the Sholes aka Tao aka Droid is coming to Verizon like Dec with a 3.7 touchscreen and keyboard running Eclair...I wanna get an idea of what HTC is doing maybe android G1 v2...the Geekphone One has undergone a serious revamp and has a stronger processor and will be unlocked for Tmo 3g and higher speeds n its got a keyboard now...

I'm waiting to see what the G1 v.2 looks like. either that or an android phone with some serious processing power and memory to match. ...............................

yeah i was interested in the droid/tao/sholes but the thing is big and boxy...its processor blows anything else pretty much out the water besides the new nokia but a 3.7 screen and the phone has a few more inches on it...i cant see that fitting comfy in my pocket...i liked how the archos android phone is looking but its also kinda big but its powerful also...i may go import unlocked and save my tmo upgrade if something catches my eye in 2010...i figure if eclair is out in dec with the verizon model i might as well wait til nov and see whats coming out in dec even tho i really like the cliq.
hopefully we hear something soon.

good ish homie! i'm definitely gonna get that move cache, sounds good, Univailable also sounds good, i think i'll give that walkie talkie a try also, good lookn!

I haven't really checked for any new apps this week, but i'll be gettn back on my grind with a little spare time coming up tomorrow.

Ya'll make sure to let us know about this 1.6 update. Regardless i wont be fkn with it, I don't see myself unrooting for shyt. Nothing tmobile drops is gonna have more options and features than a rooted phone.

Someone said they don't think they'll be messn with Cyanogen no more since he'll be droppn "bare roms" (without the google experience). Give him sometime, remember it's not just the apps that made Cyanogen. If rooted, swiped, and flashed properly his roms are much faster than the factory shyt. His roms give more options, more settings, more programs, more control over your phone, etc..... I have been running Cyanogen 4.1.11.1 for about a week now, and trust me, this thing is the best rom i've flashed on this phone! Very fast, my 3g coverage has improved a lot, task handling, etc.... The only flaw i'm having is decreased battery life, but I'm gonna make some settings adjustments to try and solve that problem. My hopes is that when Cyanogen does release his bare rom they will have a quick simple way to put Market, Youtube, Gtalk, Google Maps back on the phone. I hope it'll be as easy as installing an apk. If u have to flash from a zip, then that might detour me to not fk with it, but if it's a quick install then i'll keep dealn with Cyanogen. He has dropped tooooooooo many tweaks to improve these phones for me to leave his roms alone. A friend has hero and I showed her my shyt (Cyanogen) there's no comparison.

The Games ... App. "Cestos" is Hot ....

I also like "Where" ..."Bank of America" .... "ChompsSms" ... "FaceBook" app. ... "My Account" ... " Shazam" and "GO" ...

what's some new tight apps ya'll fkn with right now?

Sheriff Android: Sets off an alarm on your phone if someone moves it. Can even alarm if any movement or sound is detected. Helps me sleep peacefully at night knowing the lady can't just go dig through the phone

Pocket DJ: Load up two songs and you can mix them on a turntable. Nice way to burn some time

Yea i knew that its just that i gotta little discouraged when all the ahit went down about it

good ish homie! i'm definitely gonna get that move cache, sounds good, Univailable also sounds good, i think i'll give that walkie talkie a try also, good lookn!

PM me if u get that walkie talkie joint bro and also here's what he said in response to his "Bare Bones" giving u the google experience

The current state..

The last few days have been difficult.

Thanks for all the support thru all of this.

Anyone know a good GPS software for the G1? Like for driving. I got the shit modded with 14GB Partition space (512mb swap space) and that cryno whatever the hell mod (need to update) but that shit is zooming like a mofo. NES and SNES up in the joint .. but I need GPS... Love the Android, but an update on "PHONE" would be nice. The hardware doesn't compare to the Iphone 3GS.

kewl! yeah Shazam is the shyt, I like all kinds of music, sometimes I may in a store and they might be playn some shyt from the 80s, i'll put shazam on and boom! Shazam is incredible, never thought something like that would be available. It's a must have, chicks love it, i be flexn with that shyt----especially with these chicks who got metro pcs phones and shyt, haha

I'm gonna have to Cop that sheriff android, no pun intended. On da real all u cats worried about security need to get Vault. It password protects your shyt, i don't know if sheriff android does that. An app of this type, i've been waiting for since the g1 came out. I have spent atleast $350 for my last four smart phones and none had an app that could lock certain apps. Vault can password protect contacts, sms, etc.....It's a must have PERIOD. I dealt with a girl a couple of years ago--we sat talkn she kept telln me how guys were full of shyt, etc....anyways i told her i wasn't like that---keep n mind this is our very first night chilln, we just talkn, this broad gets up like she's going to the kitchen, snatches my phone off the sofa, runs to the bathroom and locks the fkn door. This btch said she got numbers out of my phone just in case i ever acted up, pscyho bitch, i never really spoke to her again, and definitely didn't have sex with her. Another case was a new girlfriend going through my phone while I was sleep, she called herself going through my call log and finding female names that were called numerous times...........broad ended up calling my Aunt and supervisor:angry::angry: I've dealt with a few girls who like to go through a ngz phone, i know several cats who let text messages ruin their relationships, SO TAKE MY ADVICE GET THIS VAULT APP. Even if your not a playa this app is a must have, u don't need anybody with access to all your contacts, messages, pics, etc....

It gives traffic updates, nearest restaurants, gas stations, etc...... Copilot is the shyt, trust me. The only problem is if i get a call, i have to start copilot over, i need to see if there's a fix for that.
