G1 Owners Unite! The Official G1/Android Thread..News/Apps/Features All In Here

i should clarify.
tmobile which pushes out the OTA's won't push them for G1 users unless they decide to follow the apple approach but that falls on google.
now i'm sure google will make it so users can get it on the G1 but Tmo will only ota it to new models.
perhaps they will provide a manual link for G1 users.
If u look up the tmo walmart roadmap the G1 has an EOL next to it.
Edit here it is
tmo-android-20091.jpg

Its like how some linus distros support an OS fully til the new OS comes out then it becomes a community thing.
Yo i had to call tmobile the other day, and I was asking about them killin the G1 support while i was asking about the mytouch3g, and the rep was like they have no plans on not supporting the G1.. ( but i smell the bullshit a mile a way, after reading a few sources about the DOG1.. google will still support it or we can always hack the G1 )..

My MAN Disavowed.

Since your attentive at right now, let me ask you some other questions. Questions mind you that I posted to xda but have not gotten an answer as of yet.

If I ROM my phone its going to downgrade me to the RC29 firm where. Does that Mean that I will have to or can upgrade to the 1.5 cupcake update to use the virtual keyboard or should that be addressed in the most recent ROM??

Also, I'm concerned with speed. Will saving apps to my sd card and increasing the processing speed on my phone be standard features that I can find in settings or will it be something that I will have to work for to get to??

Thanks in advance my dude.

what are you trying to do to your g1 ??
the downgrading process is the beginning of rooting your phone which gives you more control over your g1 than google wants you to have..
you can downgrade the g1, then flash the newest modified rom of your choice depending on whats available..
at any point you can always flash back to an official rom at almost anytime, just make sure you follow the correct steps..
please read the forums before flashing cause you can damage your g1

Is there somewhere that I can get clear, CLEAR step by step instructions to flash and add roms? There is a way of speaking on that xda site that is not good newbies that are not familiar with this type of thing wat so ever.

New Sony Android Phone

rachael2.jpg

Sony Ericsson "Rachael" is the code name for the Swedes first Android mobile, which is expected to be officially announced during the year. Den vil blive en del af Sony Ericssons XPERIA-serie. It will be a part of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA series. We've got documents on mobile, there seems to be a sales success.
Mobile is based on Qualcomm Snap Dragon QSD8250 platform, enabling processor speeds up to 1 GHz and HSPA speeds up to 7.2 Mbit per second. This platform should also have good opportunities for advanced 3D graphics.
My phone camera is 8 mega pixels with autofocus. There is also a 3.5mm jack connector and mini-USB at the top of the phone. The pressure-sensitive screen seems to be very high and according to our sources, there is a screen on the entire 4 inches. The solution is not yet known but is probably 800 x 480 pixels (WVGA), or the like.

Meizu( The company that makes M8's aka iphone clones) has merged the iphone UI with the Pre UI for a new Android based phone
newm81.jpg

newm82.jpg

Granted this company is known for clone phone they are trying to become legit and this UI is eye catching. Depending on the hardware I may get one as my backup phone in case something happens to my main android since M8's are usually inexpensive and unlocked.

Another phone is the Geek1
geek-phone-one-550x295.jpg

proto_geeks_00.jpg

Specs
* Android 1.5 (will upgrade to 2.0 Donut when released)
* 625 Mhz Marvell PXA310 Processor
* 3.2 inch resistive touchscreen
* Mini-USB port
* MicroSD slot
* Quadband EDGE and HSDPA
* WiFi
* Bluetooth
* AGPS
* 3.2 MP Camera
* Front facing camera for video calling
I'd consider this one as a backup phone also since its specs are pretty good.

LG announces android phones
Smartphones are a particular area of interest for the company moving forward and it will focus on Windows Mobile and Android as far as OSes are concerned.

They are coming by end of the year least the sony is and the m8's the geek1 supposed to be out in next few months but who knows...android is still to have 18 to 20 phones out by end of the year...Hero is rumored to be going to Sprint or Att...Verizon is slipping or showing a lack of interest.

I downloaded Advanced Task from the market and it kills apps u don't need to be running which speeds up your phone...when i started my phone so many unneeded apps were running I killed all except for my weather, phone and sms and widget and rss apps. I left the gmail running too. phone moves fast as fuck now.

We've been on pins and needles waiting for more info about the Snapdragon-powered Sony Ericsson Rachael ever since we spotted those early images over the weekend, and while the latest pics are still just potentially fan-made renders, it's the accompanying UI video that we're freaking out over today. Just like HTC's layered the Sense UI over Android on the Hero, the Rachael looks to have a polished custom Sony Ericsson interface over its Android build, and we're definitely digging the vibe -- especially the unified messaging interface that displays Facebook, Twitter, email, SMS, and calls all from one screen. It's pretty slick stuff -- let's just hope it's real, and shipping soon.

Add Flash to this and Donut 2.0...
simply amazing!

Android is coming!

^^^ This question is for clarification. Android is the OS, the base of how the phone operates but the UI is being created by Sony or by HTC?

After Google announced it was working on an operating system based on its Chrome Web browser this week, many wondered: Didn’t Google already build an operating system? And isn’t it called Android?

Not so fast. At a joint T-Mobile and Google media event Friday morning, Andy Rubin, a vice president of engineering at Google, said Chrome OS isn’t a substitute for mobile operating systems like Android, which have to solve many problems unique to mobile phones, such as managing battery life and ensuring calls don’t drop as a user is moving between cell towers.

“Chrome has a very Web-centric view of the world,” he said. “There are different problems to be solved in different categories of consumer products,” he went on. “You need different technology for different solutions.”

Rubin crystallized the differences during a wide-ranging discussion in San Francisco with T-Mobile’s chief technology officer Cole Brodman about T-Mobile’s new Android phone, the myTouch, and where Android — the thick stack of software Google developed to power higher-end cellphones — is headed.

The new phone, which will hit stores later this summer, is T-Mobile’s second Android device. It illustrates how the software, and the way companies are customizing it, is evolving, the executives said. One of the new features is a search button built into the hardware of the device. When pressed, it brings up a Google search box that will search within the content the user is looking at at the time.

There’s more to come. Rubin said that future versions will support more social-networking features. (He added that Google has been naming each new Android release a dessert, alphabetically. This spring, Google shipped “Cupcake.” “Donut,” “Eclair” and “Flan” are next.)

“Social is a big push for now,” he said, saying eventually an inbound phone call could show the caller’s photo, name and the last update he or she posted to Facebook, for example. Another focus is expanding the ways software developers who build applications for Android phones can charge for them through the Android market, its storefront.

Currently, the store only supports Google’s payment service Google Checkout, but eventually, Rubin said, it will support multiple billing systems. Brodman said that T-Mobile will soon allow customers to charge application purchases directly to their T-Mobile bill.

Despite the fancy software features, many handset makers have been slow to release Android phones. In the U.S., T-Mobile is the only major carrier that has launched one. Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo launched its first Android device — made by HTC — this week.

Rubin said momentum will pick up and that he is aware of roughly 15 to 20 Android devices likely to be in the market this year. He recently met with a hardware company that showed him 18 different devices running Android, he said.

Google notes that Android was designed for non-computer devices other than cellphones; Mr. Rubin said he’s seen robots, GPS terminals and even refrigerators running the software. “We are agnostic to the physical infrastructure that we are running on,” he said. “Fundamentally, we are trying to connect them all.”

thats weird...I know for me if I go to Fresh Meadows(in ny) I get incredible 3g but if I hit mineola(also ny) i get edge...some of jericho turnpike the ave and queens village are the same way. Hell even parts of my house switch between edge and 3g....maybe your internal antenna is bad or just where u r at is a blindspot. Keep in mind tmo is still building its 3g network so it has kinks...i would go around and see where and how you get 3g in other areas if u don't get it at all your phone needs to be replaced.
but do u have the 3g enabled? not being a smart ass but your mobile network selection might be set on just edge.

Gadget, maybe you can explain it to me because I seriously don't get what GV does.

What does it do and what's the big point??

It offers a lot but all I care about is the hack where people call you and your not charged when they use the Google Voice number.

THIS ONLY WORKS IF U HAVE MYFAVS or whatever your carrier calls it (need two slots open)

If you have t-mobile or Alltel/Verizon then you should add the following numbers to your myfaves/my circle…347-234-5001 (this is the number that your call is routed through) and 650-265-1193 (that is the number that google uses to call you when you change your voicemail message).

U can also make free outgoing calls using your computer or a VOIP on the G1 phone.

Not really sure how to do this yet because I use another service for outgoing VOIP calls but when I find out I will update u.

new tip for G1 users
if u call tmo and ask for Faxmail u can get a separate fax number 4 free to get faxes on ur phone that u can forward to a fax machine in cases of emergency.

I'm gonna try it with my GV and see if I can get free faxes to that n my email.

DId anyone else get the G1 update?? I got it this morning. Checked on it and it doesn't seem as though there is a "descriptive" update as to what it is for. From what I"ve read Google says that its a security update.

Anyone else more informed??

The X3 is a mean ass handset!! I doubt that this will ever see the light of US shores.

There has been some debate on whether or not G1 phones will be getting donut. Will we be getting donut??

Also, I don't know if any of you are excited but Hero has finally been released in the UK on Orange. TMo Germany will be the next to get it. I know I shouldn't be getting my hopes up but I'm excited to see if Hero comes to the US. I know that it doesn't work on our TMo US 3G connection but rumor has it that it might go the way of the Magic (myTouch 3G) and be redone specifically for US networks.

Where did u get that from??
Everything I've read said contrary.

on one of the android phones a group put together to buy Hero's for I think 500 or 600....bc apparently Hero wont be coming over but sprint is trying to get a non-sim card version 4 their network...Android may not come to ATT bc att tried to lock it down like Verizon does their phones n tmo usa said no hero on their network.
