G1 Owners Unite! The Official G1/Android Thread..News/Apps/Features All In Here

Royal, I'm not sure the G1 has a proximity sensor. I had my G1 for about 2 weeks and I don't remember it having one. I did very little research and I couldn't find any evidence that states the G1 has a proximity sensor.

The proximity sensor is a feature on the N1 works when you're talking on the phone and as you're placing the phone to your ear the phone goes into sleep mode. When you pull it away from your ear you'll notice the screen light comes back on and exits sleep mode. The sensor is under the screen. That's why picking the right screen protector is important. Test your G1 and see if the feature is present.

DANG, i haven't read the manual or anything, i would've never known about the proximity sensor specially since I always use bluetooth. i tested it, and it's crazy accurate, I also heard the phone has some shyt built in it's hardware that will allow all kinds of stuff to be added by developers!!

thanks for the better keyboard, I wasn't thinking right, i had used it on the g1, I also had touchpal on my sd card,i like that better than better keyboard and the android because it has all the punctations and numbers available from the main screen just by long pressing or hitting it's version of shift or alt. I just need to find a better skin for touchpal.

DAMN!!

Glad to see the activity in the thread going back up. For a while i didnt think anyone but a G1 or MT3G user cared...lol.

@ Royal - *tommy from martin voice* Cole...you stupid...hollywood my ass...negro you up and dissapeared. But its all good man...no ocking here.

N1 users - I may not have the phone but I do have the firmware and will be happy to provide any assistance to any who might need some.

Im currently upload all of my personal apps that ive collected over the year I had the G1. 223 in total...least last it counted...lol. Its a mix between rooted and nonrooted and 1.6 - 2.1 apk files. Ill post when its done uploading

good ish homie, you have lots of paid apps in there? It could be me, but it seems as if the Market has slowed down a little on good new apps. If ya'll know of any good new apps, post it with description, if ya'll don't have the apk, post it and i'll look for it.

happy to help - im kinda nervous about buying the suction cup kits and I really like the cup holder one but it looks kinda weak - i dont know. I will check out their return policy and probably get it.

yo royal - thanks - bookmarked those sites and subscribed to your thread

anyone have a good solution for syncing your bookmarks to the android os?

What r u worried about far as the suction? Once you get it on your windshield, it wont fall  mine has been up on my windshield since the first day the g1 came out. I like it because naturally it adds to all my dash lights at night, girls love it and I know it looks tight from the view behind my car. Also I can operate my phone without looking down, I can guide through the phone while still looking at the road. Also if your car doesn't have gps and your gonna use your phones gps, it needs to be either on the windshield or dash, it sounds kind of dangerous to have it anywhere else, because you'd have your eyes off the road. But, its whatever suits individual needs and comfort. I'm still using my g1 mount, i'm gonna try it 2morrow to see if it can hold the Nexus is landscape mode. If so i wont have to buy a new car holder for the n1.

If any of ya'll have a car radio that has the headphone jack input or a standard input on the front, u can simply buy that $10 headphone adapter at tmobile to hook any Android phone up to your car stereo to play mp3s, works great with TV.COM, movies etc.....

hey Mak, don't know what city your in, but those prices look a little high for those car mounts. It's probably a good price since the n1 is new and a lot of places probably aren't carrying the accessories or a variety. But, I know holders like that for the g1 and iphone go for $10 to $20 in the middle of many malls and at flea markets booths. Maybe the ones on the site are of better quality. Good look on the links though, they definitely have more of a variety than we'll find in local stores. Gonna order those micro usb's though!

For all non N1 users on tmobile, a co-worker actually got the cliq, i have dissed it in the past, but it's actually not a bad phone, i played with it, if it had a larger screen the phone would be dope. It was pretty responsive also. She got it off clist for $115. With so many people trying to get N1's, Droids, iphones a lot of good phones are going for $100 and under on craigslist.

Looks like the new mytouch 1.2 is out today.

http://www.tmonews.com/2010/02/mytouch-1-2-pics-tmonews-edition/

"Thanks to one of our oh so trusty tipsters, we now have exclusive pics of the upcoming myTouch 1.2 aka “myTouch with a 3.5mm jack”, although it looks exactly the same as the original myTouch 3G, with the exception of the 3.5mm jack. The device (like we told you) will be launching tomorrow Wednesday, February 10th. As stated before, the myTouch 1.2 will include a 3.5mm headphone jack, Swype right out of the box, an extra memory
boost (256MB RAM) and the new myTouch will also come pre-installed with an 8GB microSD memory card. For $149.99 (with a 2 year contract)
you can take home a brand spankin’ new myTouch 1.2. I say it’s well worth the price. Hit the jump for more pics! Anyone picking up one of these?"

shyt like this is the reason I wasn't waiting on the Roi, if anything tmo should've dropped a G1 follow up like G2 or something, but their spending all this money on the mytouch, maybe it's selling big in other parts of the country but most of the people I know on tmobile have G1's and blackberry's. Every week during basketball games I see a million mytouch commercials, lately i've been seeing some mytouch fender commercials, I don't know why tmobile didn't promote the G1 as much as they promoted the mytouch. I saw a post today about Sprint losing over 1 billion, because of sales, customers leaving, etc...If tmo keeps mytouch as its signature phone their gonna be in trouble. Mytouch is a good phone, but the G1 could've and should've made an impact like the Droid did...i know because the g1 wasn't on verizon it couldn't have made as much noise as the Droid but if the G1 was promoted right it could've made way more noise than the mytouch. And tmobile is gonna keep losing money as long as they keep dropping all these mytouch's, mytouch is their signature phone, their dropping 2nd and 3rd edition mytouch's like its made the impact of an iphone. I like the specs on the new mytouch, it's just the fact they haven't changed appearance.

FOR G1 USERS ONLY, hop on this beta right, here

http://www.tmonews.com/2010/02/t-mobile-launches-voice-plus-beta/#more-9694

"T-Mobile Voice Plus Beta offers the following features:

Call Divert: Carve out a little peace and quiet by sending selected numbers straight to voicemail without ringing your phone.
Call Defer: Let callers know you’re busy and schedule a convenient time for you to call them back. Send them a text message that acknowledges their call and that you will respond at a later time.
Visual Voicemail: Easily manage your voicemail! View a list of who left a voicemail, with the time of the message and its length. Choose which to listen to now and which to review later.
City ID: Get more information about the calls you receive. The city and state information of incoming calls is displayed."

pretty dope, i know their are some apps that do some of that stuff, but still good to see tmo trying to improve shyt, and giving more bang for the buck.

Though all of this isn't confirmed and definitely not accurate to the T, here's some what of a map for tmo's upcoming phones

tmo-roadmap-0210-ppcgeeks.jpg

The HD touch pro 2 looks like a good G1 follow up, unfortunately its on windows, although many are saying there's a way or about to be a way to run Android on windows phones! If it actually has the reported 4.3 screen that would intrigue many!

~I know I'ma catch hell from you guys for saying this but here I go......~

I owned both the G1 and MyTouch 3G and I liked the MT3G better. I sent the G1 back to TMO. I know a few others that sent it back for the same reasons I did, "The Hardware". The hardware was bulk and wasn't as strong as I would have liked it to be. When the MT3G dropped I though I had the next best thing to an iPhone without having an iPhone. We all know the MT3G is nothing but the G1 without the keyboard. It was slim like an iPhone, and was sexy like an iPhone. I think TMO recognize that as well. The G1 (though a great phone) was the beta. I understand why TMO put so much money behind the MT3G and so little behind the G1. I guess TMO was probably thinking it's the same phone under the hood so, you can do the same shit with both phones, let's put our money one the sexier one.

Just My Opinion.

Please ock gently.....

Im almost certain that if T-Mobile doesnt get the Motoroi, Im rolling on em. I have been a customer with them since the sidekick had a B/W monochrome screen :hmm:, but Im not cool with the way they are slowly loosing the grip on the Android hardware market. They got this shit jumping with the G1. I dont know wtf they are doing now.

even the phones with specs comparable to n1 look like shit
i was considering a mt3g le before I saw some sidebyside comparisons - it looked bloated and wack. I had wanted the Hero on sprint and considered not getting the Pre in order to get it but changed my mind.

Im with dro at this point. I may just work a shitload of overtime and break off a N1

the $279 or whatever aint that bad man.. I think the G1 was around the same price when I first got it. Im just tired of them letting all the hot phones slip away from em.

Google is gonna kill the cellphone or tablet market
Something called HTC Scorpion is coming with android 2.2. Apparently the live wallpaper n the new launcher on the N1 come from this. No pics or anything but its a 1.5ghz snap dragon and either a new phone or the android tablet...if its the tablet it will kill the ipad its a freaking 1.5ghz mobile device thats not a netbook or laptop!....if its a phone....its game over....will force giant mobile jumps by christmas(which 4 me means Droid 2 with at least 1.5ghz or more lol)

I saw this too. I can't wait to see the full specs. I hope it gives the N1 some comp.

I saw that last night at work. Thats a pretty big rumor right there. Id at least wanna see something confirmed with something as big as this and they JUST started selling the N1. I dont think they wanna upstage it just that fast. But if its a tablet then thats a whole nother monster

Yo clit. You are like me. I left the pre for this phone. Do you miss web OS? I missed it at first but android has grown on me.
Can't say yet. You're better asking Makk for now as my phone won't arrive til tomorrow. I'll be able to give you a better idea then. Hopefully my 16GB SD card will arrive tomorrow as well.

Please ock gently.....

No the mytouch was a better phone than the G1 far as specs, i'm critical of the mytouch because before it came out, all these blogs and forums were showing pics of the supposedly g2/g1 follow up, it had like a 3.5 in screen, etc...so when the mytouch dropped it was a disappointing off top. It was a dull look, many of us hoped and expected something glossy and a larger screen. Well the mytouch came with a what 3.1 or 3.2 screen? and with no physical keyboard, if i'm still gettn use to the Nexus keyboard I know the mytouch keyboard would've been hectic. Spec wise the mytouch is great, but it reminds me too much of American cars of the 90s. Their telln us under the hood (specs) they can compete with foreign cars (iphones, droids) but the plain body style isn't as attractive as those foreign cars but they want u to pay iphone/Lexus prices for an Osmobile. Bad analogy but hopefully ya'll see what i'm saying, the Mytouch was/is a good phone spec wise, if it would've had a 3.5 inch screen or a glossier finish it would've been more attractive and I might have left g1 for it. MY BEEF WITH TMO IS OK, ENOUGH IS ENOUGH, THEY HAVE BEEN FKN AROUND WITH 3.1 AND 3.2 INCH SCREENS FOR TOO LONG NOW. (G1, MYTOUCH, CLIQ, ZEPPELIN, ETC....)I don't care how powerful the specs are, if all the phones keep looking like childs play they aren't gonna sell, aren't gonna attract new customers or existing, and tmo will eventually find themselves in a hole and they might not be able to get any good new Android phones. If the G1 would've had a glossy finish it would've been more attractive. As for the mytouch, just compared to iphone, droid, that blackberry touch screen, even the Hero it doesn't look as professional.

:smh:

the $279 or whatever aint that bad man.. I think the G1 was around the same price when I first got it. Im just tired of them letting all the hot phones slip away from em.

What I did, deduct $100 off of the price of the Nexus, because I knew I could sell my G1 for atleast $100. I switched from flex pay to post pay, which gave me a $100 credit because with flex pay you paid 1 month in advance, therefore when u switch to post pay, you should have a $80 to $100 credit, so there u have it, I bought my N1 off craigslist for $400, so I basically paid $200 no tax, no contract, no rate plan change. If I would've bought it from google I would've ended up paying around 100 with tax and shipping (could've bought it for $279-100 selling g1-100 credit going from flex pay to post pay). So at the end of the day I paid less for the Nexus than I did for the G1:lol: If they come out with a phone that I think i'll like better than N1, i'll sell the N1, the N1 will hold it's resale value for sometime, number 1 it's scarce, number 2, 96% of the phones coming out this year WILL NOT HAVE OVERALL BETTER SPECS. Much props to AgentC. but many of those links he's posting are coming from all these hopeful speculation blogs. It's like going to a car show and seeing all those "concept cars". Me being a smart phone brother for going on 3 years, I saw all these pics of the so called "google phone" b4 the G1 dropped and I was disappointed to see how the g1 actually looked. I saw a million pics over the past 2 years of phones that were never dropped in the US or if they were, its not by a carrier and u wont get many features like 3g. I'm not saying the Roi, sony xperia x10, etc... aren't coming, they are, but damn, i've been seeing pics of the xperia for very close to a year. Its coming soon, but if I had been waiting on this shyt, look at how long i would've been waiting. The motorolla Zeppelin was first rumored to have a 3.7 inch screen now most of the reports and pics are showing it with a 3.1 or 3.2. Engadget is a beautiful site! Really i love technology so when I go to Engadget my sinus get clear and I can smell pleasure, really, that shyt sparks euphoria in me, but the fact is when it comes to cell phones, rumors, speculations, actual release dates, their predictions are worse than Tony Dungy's.

between mobile crunch, boygenius, and even engadget there's too much speculating going on, getting peoples hopes too high. Sure all of this shyt will come out, but just like they had hopes up high for all of tmo's last phones then when we saw the actual phones we were disappointed (not including the Nexus One). The specs and appearance are probably wrong 80% of the time. I keep telling people don't expect this huge jump in the cell phone game this year. Regardless of all these innovative things posted here and other sites, shyt will get better but don't expect to see a cellphone that has a 5.1inch screen, 3.1ghz processor, can make calls in Jupiter, etc...this year. Expect 1 big named signature phone in the 1st or early 2nd quarter, then expect a bunch of phones that are just fill ins, attracted at different groups of people, then in the 4th quarter expect another signature phone. How much has the iphone improved since it came out, same with blackberry, other than speed, size, and space how much have Android improved since its start? The industry isn't gonna go over the consumers heads quick as many of these cellphone blog sites are reporting. They aren't jumping from 3.5 to to 5.1 inch screens, they aren't jumping from 5mp cams on phones to 12megapixel cams on phones. They will gradually get better and better but their not making these quantum leaps that many of these sites are posting. Let sites like crunchtime and boygenius tell it, each carrier would drop a new Android every month, let them tell it, Motorolla is dropping The Motorolla Phantom next week, it will have a 35inch screen, no touchscreen because it can read your mind, etc....

I was on tmobile forums and howard forums b4 the G1 came out, they had so many beautiful pics and specs of the G1, same with the mytouch, cliq, now the Roi, etc.... I think the Roi will come out this year, but all those waiting on a March release, don't think so, I think if it even comes out 1st or 2nd quarter it'll probably be sold through Google like the Nexus one. How did America's number 1 network Verizon go from about to drop the X10 and Nexus One (in November sites reported Verizon would get the phone, it would have flash and a 4.3 inch screen) before Christmas go to dropping the Motorola Devour in March??? It's a big downgrade from the Droid. That should let u know where things are going, carriers will drop signature phones that they believe in, let them marinate on consumers for several months before dropping something better. The Droid's sells would never reach it's possible maximum if Verizon kept dropping better phones, right now the Droid is Verizon's top dog and everything else is a downgrade, their gonna get their investment worth out of the Droid, their gonna get as many people locked in contracts with the Droid before the drop something better. Last I heard the Droid was near a million sales! Why would u keep dropping better shyt, if the shyt you currently have has the potential to sell 2 million over the next few months. So don't expect an iphone, droid, or Nexus killer in the next few months.

between mobile crunch, boygenius, and even engadget there's too much speculating going on, getting peoples hopes too high.

Damn Royal!!!! You a typing ass muhafuka!!!

Just got my N1 today. I haven't installed anything as of yet since I'm still waiting for my 16GB card to arrive but this phone is the truth still. Shit is fast & responsive as hell. Even typing on the virtual keyboard is easy. I'm loving this phone already.

man im having no regrets at all
just got my dock too

sellin my ipod touch - im gonna use my nano for working out/in the yard still

this bluetooth dock shit is tight
fyi- Dock Bluetooth Issues

Some people have complained about losing the pairing of the phone to the dock when the phone is removed from the dock. This will happen every time you set the phone directly in the dock when bluetooth was previously off or even on an unpaired to the dock. I created a shortcut to the bluetooth settings on a page I've dedicated to system stuff- the right most page. Before I dock my phone I pair it to the dock - that way if I want to take it out of the dock to do something music will still be playing.

There is no choppy reception whatsoever with this dock. The audio quality from decent but non-audiophile speakers and high quality lossy audio files is superb. I've had other bluetooth headsets that would get choppy playback with the device and headset being only 2ft away from each other. Not the case here. I can be 20 feet away and still get the same quality sound. I max out at 35ft and 2 walls before distortion sets in. I will post some pics later. Very clean and conservatively designed device.

Man I really have to say that Google has beat Apple at its own game. The design of the N1 and the dock are simple and beautiful. The phone itself design wise is something like what you'd expect from Apple. The tech is beyond iphone/ipod touch levels. Its as easy to configure and use but offers more for powerusers(nerds).

Maybe I should just start blogging about this shit instead of turnin this thread into a blog

Im using the case it comes with and a screen protector until I can get a case that does this phone justice. I aint spendin 20-30 bucks for a case from seidio that covers the bottom ports on the phone. I need something dock compatible that doesnt make it look like shit. Google has to have more accessories in the pipeline.

lol, i typed it this morning fell a sleep and finally hit submit reply when I woke up, I know most on here wont read it, it's just for my personal reference, and the real smart phone tech heads who follow all this shyt. just me ranting-- all these fkn blogs keep posting all these damn phones and dates for the release date, how many phones was I lookn at a year ago and the phones still haven't came out....Many of the phones get posted in this post, gettn people's hopes up, i'm just saying until we get good evidence, coming from official carrier sites or with quotes from high ranked staff members at major carriers or makers of the phone we shouldn't be raving about shyt I call concept phones. I just remembered the G1 (google phone) was suppose to have a 3.5 inch screen but the thing that I wanted was it was suppose to have some fingerprint id, where u would have to press your fingerprint on the phone to use it, lol. Verizon was suppose to drop the Nexus 1 and Sony X10 in December and January. Tmo's next phone would be the Roi, all those rumors that get posted, talked about for pages and never happen. Infact my google search brings up little on the Roi coming to tmo, i even found this link that says they told us the roi was coming to tmo 9 months ago.......http://www.tmotoday.com/blogs/armo/01/24/2010/motorola-motoroi-coming-t-mobile

So I guess some of ya'll belive the Nexus 2 is coming March 10th
