It ain't when you think about it. Trinidad radius didn't extend past casual boxing fans and sports nuts, Roy at best had a 'cup of coffee' as a celebrity.

Mike was...no...IS an icon.

To give you a gauge of how famous Mike Tyson is, how many LIVING athletes not named Muhammad Ali and Michael Jordan have had as many critically acclaimed biographies and documentaries about them?

Exactly. Jamie Foxx is about to play him in the SECOND movie done about him.

People are OBSESSED with Mike and people will pay top dollar to see a great athlete and a great train wreck. Mike has been both. Not to mention he has personality which goes a loooooooong way.

Do you know about boxing at all?

Besides the dumb skill bullshit you agreed with. You become pound for pound best with no skill? The guy is damn near 50 and has taken 30 years worth of punches.

On to the next dumb comment, Tito Trinidad was on the level of Tyson in HIS country. By coincidence I'd say just like Julio Chavez and Manny, who also have had financial problems, so it seems like the nature of the sport.

Damn I wish RJJ wouldn't fight anymore.:smh:
As a fan, growing up watching him dominant
in his prime and now seeing him getting knocked around
is just plain sad.

You seem more upset by my comments than warranted. I'll explain...

1. Roy Jones Jr was one of the most PHYSICALLY gifted fighters ever. Gifted, NOT SKILLED. During his prime he was simply faster and quicker than the skill of his opponents. It was like watching a grown man play basketball with 3rd graders; he don't need a lick of skill to dominate. As Roy got older his physical gifts waned- exposing holes in his actually boxing skills which opponents capitalized on. Granted father time is undefeated but alot of the ass whipping Roy has been taking was from relying on his physical gifts for too long. Counterpoints to Roy would be Bernard Hopkins and James Toney, skilled fighters who were able to extended their careers long after their physical gifts were no longer what they could lean on.

2a. Im embarrassed for you in your silly attempt in trying to compare Trinidad to Tyson. Tyson is a GLOBAL icon- as well as Trinidad is known in this country, Tyson is known....on this planet.

giphy.gif

2b. ...and due to THE WORLD'S obsession with with Mike Tyson, he has access to numerous revenue streams that no other boxer - with the exception of Ali- has access to. I don't recall buying Manny Pacquiao's Punch Out as a kid or seeing John Leguizamo play Julio Chavez in an HBO movie. Nor do I recall Trinidad having a satirical cartoon on Adult Swim were he solves cases ala Scooby-Doo style. Tyson has money problems, if any, the way Michael Jackson had money problems: it was the spending not the making that was fucking him up.

Fall back, you suck at trolling.:smh:

man he has a good job with hbo

i just dont get it

That was my first thought too. He should be doing OK with HBO. Who knows..... Maybe he had some good sessions in the gym and thought he could make a run.

Dude is going to end up with brain damage.

There's a lot of truth to this.

How many more KOs must he suffer before he quits....this is depressing as fuck.

It has to come to a point where he's not medically cleared to fight ANYWHERE. Looks like the athletic commissions overseas don't give a fuck about safety.

I swear you're on of the boards dumbest members.

Tito was a legend and idol in HIS country. Mike Tyson wasn't in this country. He was revered by some and hated by many. He was as much a villain, a la Evander Holyfield being the good guy.

Because he did a cartoon? Is the cartoon shown globally? That's how you decide adoration?

Besides all of this being in Tyson's second act.

Manny is a fuckin elected official. Someone who has absolutely no political experience. Manny dropped out of school and was awarded a high school diploma so he could run and was given a fuckin honorary doctorate. Do you know any Filipinos? Because on fight night, they are 20 and 30 deep with people who don't give a fuck about boxing rooting for their country men. That was the same way with Tito, he had the entire country of Puerto Rico his back. I remember being in New York when Tito fought the weekend of the Puerto Rican Day Parade.

No fuckin comparison

World Wide Icon but, you know what, I'll play along.

1. Concerning Felix Trinidad, Puerto Rico, the commonwealth of the United States, has roughly 3.6 million people. That's little under HALF of New York City. I don't know the census on how many people worshipped Tyson at the height of his powers, or still do for that matter, but I bet more than 3.6 million of his fellow country men did. We can also include the commonwealth of Puerto Rico in the census as well. So fall back.

About_arnold_img-2.jpg

2. Manny Being an elected official has more to do with his popularity in the Philippines- and how politics is the ultimate popularity contest- not his popularity world wide. You realky think Mike Tyson couldn't muster up enough votes to get a House of Rep. seat? Donald Trump might become our next president? Arnold Schwarzenegger being the Govt of Cailfornia would have been a better example for of a figure with true global popularity; a man from a foriegn country who was able to obtain the highest ranking state office in our largest state soley off the strengh of his popularity. Which would be like if Manny was elect mayor of Tokyo because the Japanese like watching him box. Tyson also has an honorary doctorate too...BTW.

3. But you're right. No fucking comparison. Mike Tyson is dare I say more famous NOW than any of them were in their respective primes- in his SECOND ACT. Mike in his prime? Are you serious?

You must have nothing to do. Your strawman tactics reek of boredom.:smh:

i have never heard of a black boxing fan who didnt like RJJ

Naw, I just really dislike overly cocky ass mufuccas. I never liked him, and currently don't like Bronner for the same reasons. I guess I dislike arrogance on all levels. Make your point with your actions/skill, be humble, show great sportmanship and be great at what you do. Above all, KNOW WHEN TO FUCCIN RETIRE!

Yeah. There was a time when Tyson was THE most famous athlete in the entire world. I know younger non-americans who don't follow sports who know who Mike Tyson is now (and weren't alive during his prime) who don't know who Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquioa are. I think it's easy to forget just how big Tyson was during his prime. He transcended sports.

Roy Jones was one of the best middleweights in history. He clearly beat b hop and james toney easily. Both are seen as two of the most skilled boxers ever.

Some people say he was not 'skilled'. That's bullshit. You don't get to where he was without a high level of skill. Every fighter is a combination of athleticism and skill. The problem was that his greatest strength was his speed and his natural athleticism, not his skill like Mayweather or b hop. When he aged, he dropped from an a+ fighter to a b fighter. The same thing happened to Muhammad Ali who was the same type athletic fighter.

In his prime, he was on par with hagler or any of the other middleweight greats. Think about it, if toney couldn't put a glove on him, how would hagler have fared? I'm not saying Roy would definitely have won, but he damn well could have beat him, or any Middleweight ever. Outside of Ray Robinson, I don't think there was ever a Middleweight that you can say would definitely beat him. And btw, Ray Robinson was the best boxer pound for pound ever in my book, so that's saying a lot for Roy.

He should go down as one of the best boxers pound for pound of all time. But there was so much cac hate, especially from the racists at HBO, that he'll never get his due. Larry Merchant was the worst.

I read a list of the best middleweights ever somewhere, and they had Toney and Hopkins on it, but not Roy (even though he beat them both handily). Roy held the middleweight and super middleweight titles for 15 years and beat everyone without losing more than a handful of rounds. That is unheard of.

Roy is still a good commentator, and an icon. I really hope he stops, before it ends in tragedy.

Only time I can remember Roy being overly cocky and bragadocio was post-fight of the second Montel Griffin fight (KO1) when the sportswriters and Merchant, specifically, were predicting his downfall. I could be wrong.

Roy spent the majority of his reign at 175, not 168 and 160. Both reigns at middle and super-middle (less than 2 years) were short. The reason why is because Roy didn't have a long reign @ 160 due to only defending the title once against the Punching Postman Thomas Tate before moving up to beat Toney for the 168 strap. Both Toney and Hopkins had longer reigns @160 is why they are ranked higher. It's not like Roy outclassed Hopkins, he only outlanded him by 50+ punches over the course of 12 rounds.

I mean Roy was know for admonishing referees for not halting his fights when his opponents were in trouble due to McClellan getting hurt in the Benn fight. Ron Lipton, the referee in the Jones-Brannon fight, was never a referee for a major men's world title fight after '98.

'You can have the most powerful gun and best tactical mind in the world and STILL be no match for a man that bullets cannot harm' - Batman in a satire on Superman.

That's how PHYSICALLY gifted of a fighter Roy in his prime was. He made champion caliber fighters look like children. They simply couldn't touch him or dodge his punches. I mean MY GOD!!!:eek2:

But, the day Superman stopped being Superman...:smh:

Only explanation for him or any boxer in this condition fighting at this point is they need the money

Point blank

Not true. Roy is just unbelievably driven. He doesn't know how to turn it off. It's the same reason Kobe keeps gunnin. Doesn't matter he's missing doesn't matter he's getting knocked out he can't stop.

Sometimes when your so focused on the goal of being great or reaching your full potential you become addicted somebody has to stop him Roy won't stop himself.

Dude use to clown. I remember he played a basketball game before one of his fights.
I remember watching a special about him. In it, he said basketball has always been his favorite sport and wanted to play professionally but just wasn't good enough. Needless to say, boxing worked out for him instead.
