The folks that are coming in here and saying that you are working for someone, are missing something. My best friend has not had a job in two years. Ironically he also got married last year. Every night he complains about not having a job, yet continues to say that school is not for him. I tell him all the time, one way or another your going to have to learns something in order to get hired. Whether it's some type of certification, typing speed class or water delivering. You need to have skills.
Every time I hear his bitching, I cuss him out in frustration because I know how hard I work to stay above water in this phd program. Not having time to sleep, sleeping in the lab, working on something all night only to realize that I fucked up somewhere and now gotta start all over and run it again.
There are different kind of grinders. Folks that hustle, folks that super ambitious and know how to sale stuff, and folks that simply out work others. If you are not one of these, you need to make some changes in your life cuz folks like me will simply out work yall in the dust. I hope you guys aren't having this same argument 5 yrs from now.

If you inspire to be an entrepreneur then college is not needed. You can save the 50,000 that would be spent in college on getting your company off the ground. If choose to work in corporate America then it is wise to play the game. A degree in the corp world allows you to maneuverer freely in it.

I was actually surprised to read the title. I'm like there are college haters on the board. I know a slew of Negros that don't go to college but I don't run into to many black people who are college haters. Just heard the straight up talk that it wasn't for them or they fucked up and couldn't make it there. Even when they argue hard that it’s not for them they would knock it for the next person. Simply because they are not idiots. Just cause something doesn't work for you doesn't mean its not applicable.
College is a tool builder. A person needs to improve his skills to make him/her self with skills to apply to life. College is about improving the workforce when suitable. Some people go for other studies they want to pursue whether it’s the arts or somehow wanting to push humanity forward in some fashion but it’s a place that fosters growth towards these goals. It is a training solution. For anyone on here knocking college whether you have been or not you are thinking small and unable to see the bigger picture. Obviously have very little knowledge of economic systems. Populations with higher rates of education simply do better in life. If all you can see is your community alone. In this day and age let’s look at a black community with all highschool educated individuals of lets say 10,000 vs. one with college grads of the same number population. Which place do you think is better off?
Yes capitalism is about entrepreneurship but more so about competition with in its system. In the aggregate better trained people perform better. The innovation aspect can circumvent the use of people but where people are required in the aggregate the more skills available to them they will do better then those with out. Most skills are obtained through training and that is what you can get in college. For the haters talks of I didn’t need it. You are one person don’t push bullshit on your kids. For you saying look what I did with out, look how much I make. You are playing the odds. Yes Bill Gates dropped out and did an amazing thing with his company. Let’s compare him to most other successful CEO’s. Almost all of them are well educated. The majority of people who are not don’t make it to become and CEO of a public company. YES THERE EXIST A WHORE OUT THERE WHO COULD BE MADE INTO A HOUSEWIFE(as unbelievable as it sounds statistically it has to be true). ARE GONNA PLAY THE ODDS AND BE THE DUMMY TO TRY IT OUT. I would hope not.

I'm a personal trainer, a cable tech and hopefully next year, I'm going to open my business. I'm still looking at locations and cost, but that's the only thing stopping me (10,000 more of my own money, I don't believe in loans).

I dont hate college...i did 2yrs, but didnt graduate. Life got in the way. But I make around 50k, over 70+ with the monthly incentives. I do plan to continue with school...i told ma i would. It's to honor her.
thread is bullshit. People should do what is best for them, according to their talents and aspirations. For future entrepreneurs, college can be a great breeding ground of ideas and networking. There are countless stories of people who met in college and then create a successful start-up as a result of bouncing ideas off each other and building relationships in college.
The same can be done without going to college as well. Lastly, the average person is not built to be a successful business owner nor does everyone want to be. Also, being your own boss does not guarantee six figure or these million dollar salaries as wells. People perpetuate the image that self employed equates you are balling out of control and its just not realistic. Again, do what works for you.

Your question does not apply to me, because I have a degree, but...I personally know this Middle Eastern dude that builds businesses up and flips them. He has no degree. He owns some property also. The first business I helped him build back up was when I was 22, so he had to be 23 or 24. I haven't seen him since, 2008, but he had built up a liquor store and flipped it in Carolina, and the last business I saw him running was a hotel with a restaurant attached to it. I can't lie, he busts his ass.
