It's like the analogy of the cave.
Imagine all of humanity consisted of 10 people, living in a cave, never venturing more than a mile away.
One adventurous soul takes a 4 mile walk, and returns weeks later telling of a fabulous oasis, clean fresh water, mango and avocado trees in abundance, and pertetual 75 degree weather, just 4 miles beyond the ridge over which nobody dares to venture .
The other nine refuse to believe him, preferring to shun and ridicule him because claims to have discovered something the others are too afraid to experience themselves.
Frankly, it does not bother me any more. I don't even bother talking about where I have been to people who cannot see because they have there eyes closed. Just like Curly.
I actually got into a full blown argument with one of my ass backward, Mississippi raised relatives, who INSISTS she knows INFINITELY more about Thai women, Thai culture, and Asia in general. After all, she has traveled as far as Tennessee, even venturing more than 100 miles into the State of Michigan!!
What else is there to discover that she does not already know...
