I know there are questions on which device to get. Hopefully I can add to some clarity.
The Fire Tv is another streaming device. I think most of you are overlooking the term "streaming". And confusing streaming apps and media servers.
Plex is a media server. If you have a lot of content it is a powerful program to have.
XBMC is not a streaming app but more like a hub for streaming apps as well as a media server.
Roku, Apple TV, WD Live, and Fire TV are streaming devices that can have XBMC (with the exception of WD Live) and Plex loaded on to them.
The G-Box is a Android streaming device that can have xbmc easily installed on it.
HTPC is a personal computer connected to your tv that is loaded with all of your media and XBMC, Plex, Playon, games, etc.
If you are a "streamer" either device is good but some may have limitations (ex: can't download movies directly to device, some apps like youtube don't run on certain devices, some devices only play up to 720p).
If you are a "downloader" any device that can have a hard drive attached coupled with Plex would be a good choice. Be advised that HD movies can take up a lot of HD space.
My personal opinion is that if you have a powerful enough computer give xbmc a try first. I hooked a good friend of mine up with xbmc on his brand new laptop and he had it hooked up to his living room tv 75% of the time. He is now about to buy the GBox. I think the Gbox mx2 is the way to go. Yes other devices may be more powerful but the Gbox has seamless integration of xbmc.
A few tips I will add:
If you can, have the device hardwired into your router instead of wirelessly.
Get rid of the cable company issued modem. Use your own modem.
Use a VPN.
OK cool thanks
