Fire TV+XBMC = Win

I know there are questions on which device to get. Hopefully I can add to some clarity.

The Fire Tv is another streaming device. I think most of you are overlooking the term "streaming". And confusing streaming apps and media servers.

Plex is a media server. If you have a lot of content it is a powerful program to have.
XBMC is not a streaming app but more like a hub for streaming apps as well as a media server.
Roku, Apple TV, WD Live, and Fire TV are streaming devices that can have XBMC (with the exception of WD Live) and Plex loaded on to them.
The G-Box is a Android streaming device that can have xbmc easily installed on it.
HTPC is a personal computer connected to your tv that is loaded with all of your media and XBMC, Plex, Playon, games, etc.

If you are a "streamer" either device is good but some may have limitations (ex: can't download movies directly to device, some apps like youtube don't run on certain devices, some devices only play up to 720p).

If you are a "downloader" any device that can have a hard drive attached coupled with Plex would be a good choice. Be advised that HD movies can take up a lot of HD space.

My personal opinion is that if you have a powerful enough computer give xbmc a try first. I hooked a good friend of mine up with xbmc on his brand new laptop and he had it hooked up to his living room tv 75% of the time. He is now about to buy the GBox. I think the Gbox mx2 is the way to go. Yes other devices may be more powerful but the Gbox has seamless integration of xbmc.

A few tips I will add:
If you can, have the device hardwired into your router instead of wirelessly.
Get rid of the cable company issued modem. Use your own modem.
Use a VPN.

OK cool thanks

which GBOX do you need? Amazon has many different version of GBOX on sale

speakup..brah sounds interesting
I will post a something later this week, I have family in town but it depends on what you want to do with your setup.
So which would be better??
G box or fire tv??
One is dual core the other is quad..
Does that matter at all with streaming?
I haven't used Firetv but any small pc, nettop, droid device, atv will run xbmc with no problems. However, I will pickup one in the very near future now that I know you can sideload shit on to it.
Dude if you were a sales man I would buy whatever you're selling.

Would you be so kind to show us to get a setup going the way you have it?? Much appreciated. You can use YOUTUBE videos or any method you can best tell people like myself how to setup it up. You using FireTv or GBox?
I use to be a diehard mce guy before I discovered openelec and how to configure an "xml" file. I will drop some knowledge later this week. I need to dip into some of my notes. It will only be specific to my hardware and software selections but it should be easy to extrapolate my results to try different things.

I have playon on my Roku.. Why should I care about this?
Live tv for starters and playon is not free, xbmc and most of the software is free. There are hardware cost for antennas, usb and/or network tuners like hdhomerun but it will pay for itself if you decided to ditch cable.

Plus XBMC addon platform is off da chain for streaming content they have repositories for porn, live sports, new and old movies, and tv shows.

Fair enough, I hate responding to shit from my phone.

It has been awhile since I have tried plex, is there a way to watch live tv? Does plex have pvr capabilities? commercial skipping of pvr content? repositories for porn, live sporting events like NFL, NBA, boxing, etc...? Movies? TV shows?

thats what im looking for

Get the G-box Midnight MX2. If you can, get the special XBMC edition. You will still have to load the proper addons (icefilms, 1channel, mashup) to watch what you want but at least it will have xbmc ready for you.

You can stream "live" tv with certain addons to xbmc. But be warned, it's not like you will be watching ESPN uninterrupted in full HD. Sometimes links drop out, buffering occurs, heavy pixelation, etc. If you are truly a sports fan then get an HD antenna and find a buddy to split a sports package from DirecTV.

For shows... every episode is available for streaming. You just have to pick and choose. I try to explain to people the difference between cable and streaming. It is like eating at a restaurant. With cable, you are fed (the show) when they are ready to serve it to you (the show's time slot). With streaming, it is like an all you can eat self serve buffet. I personally don't see a need to watch live tv unless it's sports. Every episode of every show I wanted to see has been available. Usually within an hour of the show airing.

Porn? No need to even mention. It's there.

PVR? If you have a good link the stream can pause, ff, and rwd.

If you need those extra capabilities you can use XBMC as the Media Player and connect it to a Plex Media Server to manage your media.

Plex Media Server replaces the MySQL database, and adds a ton more features that using a MySQL database cant do...
-Trans code media to support whatever format the device requires.
-Web interface to manage media
-Web Media Player, play your media from any web browser
-Stream media to remote locations, my entire family can access my movie, tv show, and music collection
-Provides DLNA server so Wii, PS3, and XBox can all play media on server. Even my Dish Hopper can play media from the Plex DLNA Server.
-Multi-user support, can make media sections hidden or visible for different users. That way you can hide stuff from the kids.
-Manage media Queue, play almost any video on the web on your TV
-Sync media to any device with Plex app or to the cloud (Dropbox, Google docs, etc), also converts it to needed format and you can set quality/size.

The Plex Media Server work with both the Plex Media Player and XBMC. Plex Media Player is also available for many more devices than XBMC is available for. You can even connect MediaPortal to Plex Media Server with a plugin.

This thread is even opening my eyes. Speak more on the Direct TV sports package? Is it reasonable per month?

I just got a G-Box MX2 yesterday and I've already watched Ride Along, Kick Ass 2, Luv, Fruitvale Station, Delivery Man, and the first few episodes of Breaking Bad Season 1. It's really not that complicated although navigating the menus can be cumbersome because you're basically navigating a computer with a remote control (but even that it isn't that bad).

It's pretty simple to set up. Plug in the AC adapter, connect an HDMI cable (or the included RCA audio/video cable), and connect a Cat 5 cable (or you can use wifi). That's it!

From that point you select different 'add-ons' from their version of an app store. The most popular add-ons seem to be 1Channel, MashUp, Icefilms, & SportsDevil (VideoDevil if you want to watch porn).

I haven't explored the live TV capabilities because I don't plan on dropping cable (yet).

There are a number of tutorials on YouTube if you are still on the fence, but I think that you'll be more than satisfied with one.

I don't know Mashup's live streams on Xbmc hasn't given me any problems watching Espn or Nfl network. When you combine that with Tv guide dixie then you have everything you need.

I suggest you get a wireless usb keyboard with touchscreen mouse like the Logitech Wireless Touch Keyboard K400.... It will make it easier for you move around and search for movies.... And I suggest that you don't click Navi-x for a couple of weeks... It's been down for awhile and it will lock up you gbox if you try to use it.

I think it may be time to have a Cable Cutters subforum on the board.

Using a VPN is not dire but for what we are doing it helps keep your ISP from snooping. If you cut your TV package and they log your activity and see you are streaming they may try to throttle your speeds. Look what Comcast just did with Netflix. Just do some research on VPNs. There are free ones but most good ones require a fee. Again, it is not essential. But it is good to have.

Yeah, I have watched full games without a problem. I've also had streams drop out and all of the mirror links stop working. I just want everyone to know that streaming live tv is still a work in progress. It's not perfect.

^^^This. Or you can use a tablet. This is what I posted in another thread...
Another tip for those that are getting into XBMC.

If you have a tablet, use YATSE Remote app instead XBMC's tablet app. XBMC's app just turns your tablet into a touch screen remote. Maybe its me but I was unimpressed. YATSE lets you browse content and queue it while the current movie is still playing. For instance, if I am in the middle of a Family Guy episode and I want to watch an episode of Boardwalk Empire next. I can use my table with Yatse and browse icefilms and select the episode to play next. All without interrupting the stream of Family Guy. You can use it to view trailers to see if a movie is worth the time and bandwidth before steaming. It also has a virtual keyboard feature for those pesky captcha inputs.

Yatse is free in Google Play Store. But in order to get ALL the features I mentioned above and more you need the unlocker which cost $4.49. Of course, this is bgol so... here you go: Yatse Unlocker

If that link stop working you can just get the Unlocker from Blackmart.

I just received my Fire TV and currently reading up on how to 'make it do what it do'. I plan on getting the g-box once I'm familiar with some things and test both out. Whichever one I like the least, I will put it at my girl's house.

So, thanx for all of the info, fellas.

xbmc gotham v3 + xbmchub , addons , 1 channel , movie 25 , sports devil , NTV . :D:D:D

cut dstv:angry: (local satelite in africa) 6 months ago .

my life is good .

I checked out the XBMC website and read that you can use it on ya laptop and tabs too. Nobody has in on their devices only G-BOX's and Fire TV's?

Wouldn't I be able to get all the same shit on my tab and just Chrome Cast it to my TV??

mine is running on my laptop , use it when i m travelling (which is every week , so i dnt have to watch hotel tv ) . at home have a hp microserver running fedora 20 with xbmc on top of it , connected to my av receiver , have synology 8 tera byte nas , with download station grabbing my movies and tv show torrents via rss feeds .

Have a script (The renamer ) which automactical renames all my movies and tv shows and arranges them in their respective folders .

Xbmc then automactical scraps my tv and movie folders and grabs cover art .

A few tips I will add:
If you can, have the device hardwired into your router instead of wirelessly.
Get rid of the cable company issued modem. Use your own modem.
Use a VPN.

What is the purpose of using your own modem and a vpn?

HI team

will be upgrading my setup in the next three months .

Basical redoing my tv room .

XBMC will be the main focal point .

Things to do .

Storage . 8 terabytes .
HTPC
Operating system Linux
Av receiver Pioneer
Speaker setup 5.1 do not have space for 7.1 or 9.2 can install bookshelf speakers JBL control 1 which are small and ceiling mount them to get a smaller footprint .

Control XBMC app on iphone , tablets and google nexus .

Will update with pictures .

What is the purpose of using your own modem and a vpn?

Privacy! So your broadband provider can't see what you are up to. Sometimes they get salty and throttle your speeds. Plus, most people are leasing the modem that is provided to you by their broadband company. One less charge to have to worry about.

I dont like the little android boxes , i run a full blown OS , fedora 20 , and i can customise it the way that i want .

For XBMC the R9 290X is way over kill unless you are a gamer . All i want is 1080p decoding , plus my amplifier upscales any content to 1080 anyway , and all my dts master audio and dolby digital audio decoding is done on my amplifier , so even a dual atom processor will suffice .

Which router would you recommend? I am in NYC and we have Cablevision here, I think I am paying 7 bucks a month to rent their router :smh:

I have a smart TV already!!! all i need is espn and NFL !! and i m good. my cable bill is about 188..:angry:

Can I get XBMC/LIVE TV on my WDTV LIVE HUB? CHROMECAST? MICROSOFT SURFACE? Thoses are the the devices I have.

If you have a chromecast you might want to look into showbox. To cast the showbox content which is very extensive you will need one of these apps, bubble upnp, allcast, avia, or local cast. Each of them work good . With bubble upnp you can also cast xbmc. To do so you'll need to download xbmc Gotham 13 media center on your PC and use bubble upnp as a remote and cast. But trust me if you haven't already heard of showbox you will be thanking me later. For movies and TV shows it's ridiculous
