Eddie Murphy Is Bringing Eddie Murphy Back: Why He’s Returning To Stand-Up & The Big Screen

Also, if I wanted to focus on that, I could have posted the first article I read on this, from Vanity Fair, rather than the source material: Eddie Murphy Still Cringes at His Old Stand-Up Material.

That would have had at least 40 replies by now, a whole bunch of people talking about him trying to please the gays, being politically correct, etc.

Yet I didn't frame it that way. I posted the New York Times article, Eddie Murphy is bringing Eddie Murphy back.

But that's what you want to focus on. That's your only takeaway.

The trending articles cast Eddie's statements as an apology in a way I don't feel is accurate. I think his statements were recognition, not an apology.

Other than that, I agree with Jemele.

But i think we want the OLD eddie like that.

We just want funny

I feel like everyone is acting like hos entire act is jusy gay jokes

It was never ever that.

Yes we want funny period.

It’s just you want to lean toward something your certain about versus a mystery box since he hasn’t done stand up in years.

Not that he can’t be funny but it’s the “Michael Jordan coming back to play for the wizard effect.” You hate to see a great go out like that trying to make a comeback.

The gay jokes stood out the most to people, that’s what resonated with them.

That was cool, I hadn't seen it since it happened.
This, to me, is a point relevant to the "old Eddie" talk-- while I enjoyed the Bill Cosby bit, I wonder if he has any impersonations from this century. After his appearance on Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, I observed "As he and Seinfeld talked about the old glory days of comedy, almost all of his impressions were 80s/90s era figures like Mike Tyson, Michael Jackson or Prince. (He did have a nice Chappelle imitation.) He talked about how much he loved to stay home and do nothing-- literally nothing-- and totally disconnect from society."

EXACTLY ^^^^^^

and as someone who was THERE at the MOMENT?

That was not even a thing like that

The BIG moments? the ICONIC moments?

were the impressions

the singing

the childhood flashbacks

finding a little boy in the audience and giving him a joke to tell friends in school

THAT was what made that performance TIMELESS...

Real Talk?

you could EDIT OUT the "gay" jokes?

And try to tell me if its STILL NOT the FUNNIEST performance of his generation?

and also I have heard more GAY people actually do the police siren joke TILL THIS day then ANY other "gay" joke told

sidebar...

lets get this one over with... the AIDS on the lips.

If ANYONE tries to use this as some referendum on Eddie PERSONALLY they full of sh*t

WE as a PEOPLE were so damn ignorant of AIDS THEN?

that in fact?

I would argue that SPECIFIC JOKE?

Actually made people MORE aware of how ABSURD it was to be FEARFUL of gay people or anyone who had HIV

(cause he ALSO talked about OTHER "stright" STDs)

remember at THAT time?

The public didn't know the DIFFERENCE between HIV and AIDS

and ALL these so called WOKE people FORGET

how players did NOT want to play with Magic Johnson after he revealed he was HIV positive?

YEARS AFTER THIS ROUTINE

when we supposedly KNEW BETTER

And the SAME people attacking Eddie for a 20+ year old routine?

They the same ones complaining about LGBTQ being TOO SENSITIVE and don't want them in the same restroom

The hypocrisy is migraine inducing.

Sorry for the rant Mello... not sdirected at you AT ALL family

I just had to let that out.

If he ain’t apologizing for wearing red leather jacket with no shirt on underneath, then he doesn’t need to apologize about jokes!

He has to act like Beverly Hills Cop 3 never happened.

IMO for Eddie to be successful with his comedy return he has to be more personal and even self-deprecating.

Its the one thing he's missing that people would respond to especially since he's so private.

For example he's never addressed the tranny shit head on, it would be brilliant for him to turn it inkt into a bit clowning himself.

People bet not be expecting Raw Eddie Murphy. He still funny though, when you watch some of his interviews they always make me laugh.

I remember just recently people were torn on tambourine

I thought it was outstanding.

It was grown and personal and hit me hard.

But i think it was a SPECIFIC more mature older experienced audience much like RAW was.

But many did not find it to be Chris Rock better work.

If he goes "G" rated stand up/movies …… it will be a short one ….

:crymeariver:

.

This is unexpected...

"I think what happened was, there was a period when Hollywood was on some PG-13… that’s how you reached most audiences. And there was, maybe, a 15-year period where that’s all everybody was doing. So I got caught up in that shit. But no, doing this movie, we went, ‘This movie has to be rated R because of the way Rudy Ray Moore was.’ But I’m doing Coming to America next, and that’s PG-13."

First of all, fuck all these folks wanna go back in time and hold any artist to performances years ago. As social norms change art changes with it. Jewish folks, lgbtqlmnop, white, black, ... nobody's so special you can't joke about them. Just don't support if you don't like it. What they should really be asking is how, his performance is Dolemite is My Name was so fucking wack. Nigga built his career on imitating celebrities, and drop the ball like that. I hope this nigga still funny.

A Family Affair: Eddie Murphy and His Kids Through the Years
A PHOTOGRAPHIC LOOK BACK AT THE FATHER OF 10 SPENDING TIME WITH HIS CHILDREN OVER THE YEARS

As far as Black Hollywood royalty goes, it’s no secret that Eddie Murphy is king of the box office and his receipts reign supreme. To celebrate his upcoming Coming 2 America sequel, Murphy graces two of the three new special covers of ESSENCE’s March/April 2021 issue—and for one of them, he’s posing alongside his daughter, fellow actress and co-star Bella Murphy.

Sharing the spotlight with his family is nothing new for Murphy, 59, who has been regularly photographed over the years at movie premieres and on red carpets with his very large brood.

Murphy is a father of 10 and his children’s ages range from 2 to 31. His oldest are sons Eric Murphy, 31, whom he had with Paulette McNeely, and Christian, 30, whom he shares with Tamara Hood. Murphy shares five children with ex-wife Nicole Mitchell (formerly Murphy)—daughters Bria Murphy, 31, Shayne Murphy 26, Zola Murphy, 21, and Bella Murphy, 19, and son Miles Murphy, 28.

Murphy also shares a 13-year-old daughter named Angel Iris Murphy with former Spice Girls bandmember and TV personality Melanie “Mel B.” Brown. His youngest children, welcomed with fiancé Paige Butcher, are son Max Charles Murphy (named after his late uncle, Murphy’s brother Charlie Murphy), 2, and daughter Izzy Murphy, 4.

Take a look back at Murphy and his children over the years.
