DRAKE CONFIRMS ‘CERTIFIED LOVER BOY’ SEPTEMBER 3RD RELEASE

Ok there we go, thank you. To me, Drake can’t fuck with none of these dudes on his best day.

None.
It's fucked up, because when he came out doing the "mixtape" tours, dude was spitting, but then he found his niche' with the soft pop shit. I ain't mad at him, I'm just not a fan. I give him props for finding a sustainable lane in this business. That's hard to do.

Okay, somewhat of a reach, at least, but yeah. Fresh Wes was never that big.

Edit: you brought dude already.

And for the record, young blood, singing been worked its way in hip hop, but it's not integral to the art form.

Here's Whistle

Here's the Force MDs

How about UTFO? Kangol 1st Haitian, not 'clef

Not singing? You broke Nate Dogg's heart. Or TJ Swan, dude that sung on Biz Markies tracks? But you knew that.

If I really wanted to take it there, we could brought up hip hop orphan, freestyle. Most of that is singing over Planet Rock, the original tunes.

I can’t take this post seriously.

How many popular Canadian rappers do we have that crossed over in the United States? In the history of rap?

How many Jewish rappers have been successful in rap? Not lawyers or those working the background, rappers?

Drake took out a 30k loan to make his first video with Trey Songz, there were no backers or those to push him.

This guy wasn’t marketable and seen as having the potential to be one of the biggest rappers ever.

Like you said, we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

Took the words right outta my mouth

I first heard this kid on local mixtapes and radio back in 2006 and immediately thought he can spit, and he had a certain breakout star quality and crispness in delivery that a lot of other local Toronto rappers lacked at that time. he mentioned that phonte was his favorite rapper, and you could hear the influence in his delivery back then. he even did some tracks with him and elzhi.

somebody told me that this rapper was the kid from degrassi and I thought "damn it's a shame that this talented kids not gonna be taken seriously as an emcee because of his history of a child actor"

whooooops!! I was completely wrong on that shit...

not only that but he achieved this level of success with all those aforementioned strikes going against him:...not the best rapping voice, not a tough guy, former child actor, canadian, sings, not the best singing voice but still puts out hit after hit for over an 11 year run. it's pretty remarkable...he ain't my favorite artist but I been supporting since 2007 and normally check for his albums. and revisit most of his songs of just straight spittin ( Am/PM/city series, the album intros (Tuscan leather etc), lemon pepper freestyle etc)

What you said is all I’m saying!

Everything about him were strikes against him and not “Marketable” like everyone always says.

And you’re right, Phonte was his favorite rapper and many could see the influence.

Unlike you I didn’t hear his music, but I did see an article about him in the city paper. I read “Canadian” and “Teen Actor” and thought Welp, he’ll never make it! :roflmao:

And luckily we were both wrong.

I can’t take this post seriously.
How can you? You can't Google everything. For instance, you brought Canadian rappers. Let's step back for a second. The 2nd & 3rd biggest market for hip hop for in France and Japan. The watch keepers let in who let in. You may argue they have to speak English.

Why isn't the same requirement cast in foreign countries? Michael Jackson has great songs but why should it make Romanian radio? Because our corporations encroach on local cultures overseas. Now talent doesn't matter anymore.

You insist talent is what put Drake on yet you use his 30K music video he financed as an example?

Sure talent pays a role but someone has to nudge those Gate keepers at times. The internet hasn't leveled everything yet.

The gate keepers were in a bidding war for Drake’s talent, he made that happen.

Honestly, he did good. The platform isn't receptive to "spitting" like the 90s and that's fine. That backpack rap drifted over to battle rap. Drake is a fan of KOTD and SMACK URL. Besides, all being "lyrical" meant a collage of internal rhyme schemes. These kids plant jokes, allusions, puns, etc in a verse on a new plateau but our generation as a whole still ain't feeling them because they're not freestying.

But what we enjoyed isn't popping. Why be lyrical if lyrical ain't selling? Hip hop with DJ scratches is hella dead too. Sometimes heads don't appreciate a live band. Social media is selling longevity too. Sing R&B, but perpetuate rap beef. (any means of cooking rap beef is currency I digress)

I enjoy your opinion as you're a genuine statesman on the topic, beyond fandom, an actual participant in the glory years but it's over.

I'm dreaming of a Nas album with basic rhyme schemes. He was tight before BUT now his shit is tepid uninspired lukewater. We need a new yardstick to measure mic skills.

Lyrical rap never really sold, it was never really commercially successful.

Yes there have been “Some” lyrical rappers that have been successful but as a whole, dude’s spitting historically doesn’t make the registers ring.

It wasn't about the money like it is. People were shamed for trying to go mainstream. Even 3rd Bass dissed it. Before that, doing hip hop for pay was shunned. It was about props and skills. Being a career rapper wasn't even a thing. Corporate America slowed hip hop by cutting out its versatility. Gangster rap was also halted by gatekeepers. Jerry Heller was the plug though. In the 80s, hip hop was hot because it was trend eat trend before the net. You had to keep pace. The style changed in months. If you listened to the radio shows, you would notice it quickly.

yup

Well, Drake still isn’t “Way 2 Sexy” for the charts. After boasting the largest album debut in over a year, and one of the biggest streaming weeks in music history, the rapper’s latest album, Certified Lover Boy, has now broken a slew of records over on the Hot 100, too. For starters, Drake has a record-shattering nine songs in the top ten, besting his own record of seven Scorpion songs in 2018. He becomes the second artist ever to occupy the entire top five, alongside the Beatles, and the first artist to do it solely off debuts, breaking his previous record for debuting all three Scary Hours 2 songs in the top-three earlier this year. What’s more, all 21 songs off Certified Lover Boy debuted in the top 40, meaning Drake occupies a majority of the spots in that section of the chart.

At No. 1 is “Way 2 Sexy,” thanks to an absurd music video that was released alongside the album. The song features Young Thug and Future, becoming Thugger’s third and Future’s surprising first-ever No. 1, after a record 126 Hot 100 appearances. As for Drake, it’s his seventh chart topper, not to mention his fifth No. 1 debut, tying Ariana Grande for that record. Now just give him a few more years to shoot for the entire top 10.

I downloaded this guys discography the other day just to see what the big deal was. I think I listened to one album so far this is the worst shit I've ever listened to. I'm flabbergasted. How the fuck is this dude a millionaire? And then I did research and apparently some people think he's one of the greatest of all time. How in the fuck we go from Rakim, LL COOL J, Cube Big Daddy Kane to this silly muthafucka?

Go talk to a young woman aged 18-to-35 and you may find your answer.
