Kaya jumped the gun with his statement about cops, teachers and firemen imo...I mean by "his" definition cops, firemen and DEFINITELY TEACHERS () can be included as part of the middle class...although they have to put some years in...

Add invest in foreign markets

Play long term investment strategies instead of short term.

Get away from high risk portfolios. Diverse yuor bond and CD holdings.

Roth Account for the win.

Not directed at you but I am assuming all these people talking about investing in this and that have a nice little nest egg to do so with cause as "poor" as everyone is supposed to be in this "crisis" I don't see what good investing a pittance in gold/euros/etc will do...

It all depends. It is definatly geographical. In some areas those careers are extremely low paid.In some others they are upper middle class.I think this is the same point that beatdown was trying to make but his numbers to support that point were off.

So, let me see if I have this right, Amos & Andy are in here trying to say the economy is not that bad and we are just making this up? And they are arguing salaries as a way to prove their point? Is that what I'm hearing? They remind me of this dude on TV the other day, when asked by reporters about the economy and mentioned gas prices may reach $4/gal, this clown said he didn't hear about it and it was *news* to him.. :smh: talk about out of touch with reality...

Dude you are totally out of the conversation...you can't even follow the point being made or argued... ...all you are doing is coming in the thread when you think it suits you and taking cheap little jabs...

So, let me see if I have this right...

No...you clearly don't...the salaries where brought up to discuss whether those professions fall into middle class salaries...not to "prove" whether or not the middle class is sliding toward poverty...

That is a huge gap.

30K middle class means you are living in a poor city, lack city resources, subject to mass layoffs etc.
If not you are lower class.

70K middle class means you are living in a city with a high cost of living, most likely rent because real estate is high, work more hrs than the average.

I would say middle is more 50K-70K.

I wouldn't even count teachers, cops, firemen as middle class anymore (they used to be).

This is my quote.

If a suffolk county cop makes 90K, its because he HAS TO live in suffolk county. Suffolk county is at the very eastern tip of Long Island.

Thus the second statement holds true........
"means you are living in a city with a high cost of living, most likely rent because real estate is high, work more hrs than the average."

Excerpt:

"Our cost of living indices are based on a US average of 100. An amount below 100 means Suffolk County, NY is cheaper than the US average. A cost of living index above 100 means Suffolk County, NY is more expensive.
Overall, Suffolk County, NY cost of living is 138.19."

So my point holds, it doesn't matter how much you make if you don't take into consideration the cost of living there.

ok, there's Amos

NY tri state area is expensive period, especially with the LI and Jersey having some of the highest property taxes in the nation with westchester county right up there.

Leroy, understand that you CANNOT look at salary without looking at the cost of living.

I could pay you 150K in the Hamptons but based on the cost of living there, you may be living in a garage or basement of somebody's house.

Understand.

"Your" point...? You took Divine's numbers and gave the instances where you think they might apply then you went on to flatly state that your idea of middle class "is more" along the lines of 50-70K with no mention of cost of living...

Duh...!!! The fact still remains that cops, firemen and teachers in NYC are generally capable of earning a middle class salary...the Hamptons is an extreme scenario...I could give you 150K to live in Vandeveer projects does that make you rich?????
