Dispelling a Myth: Part 1 - Kobe Bryant is a clutch player

So, I had a little free time today and since so many people in this thread were calling my bluff, stating that Wobe Bryant was the top clutch player in the NBA, I started to think to myself, "Hey maybe these Wobe testicle worshippers were right and I was wrong after all :("

But being that I dont have long term memory problems like most Wobe crotch cowboys (Only remembering his performance against the Cavs) I looked it up, and the results were a lot different than projected...

The following data is taking from the game play-by-plays from NBA.com and is 100% accurate. This data will reflect the lakers' games from November of the 2005-2006 season:

Team Record: 5-8

Number of close games (For this thread's purposes -
lakers had a chance to win within the final 60 seconds of
the game) : 5

The play by play will start within the final seconds of the game or "crunch time" where the lakers were either in the lead, tied, or trailing by no more than 2 possessions.

Plays made by Wobe will be in Bold .

Plays made by those D-league allstars (lakers not named Wobe) in Purple.

November Plays:

(0:22) [PHL] Team Timeout: Short

CHI @ LAL - 11/20/05

Chicago plays in Red.

We join this game with 1:25 remaining in the 4th qt after Tyson Chandler fouls Lamar Odom.

So Chris Duhon makes 2 FTs to push the Bulls lead to 3. The lakers still have a chance to tie with 11 seconds left on the clock. Im almost sure they will since BGOL lemmings say the lakers have the most clutch player in the NBA on the team.

(0:11) [LAL] Team Timeout: Regular

Are you Wobe fan boys starting to see a trend here? Well I guess not since you are too busy hugging your Wobe Bryant action figure and plotting how to get his nuts in your mouth :puke:

The lakers are now 1-2 in winnable games in November and the 'most clutch player' in the NBA is now 1-5 FGA when a make puts the lakers in the lead or tie.

But wait, there's more...

:hmm: So you BGOL experts are saying... With the lakers down by a bucket with 12 seconds left and the best player in the NBA on the team, a bum like Lamar Odom is taking the last shot? Good thing that Big-10 Phony Brian Cook bailed him out or it wouldve been another loss at home by the lakers.

(0:02) [SAN] Team Rebound
(0:02) [SAN 90-84] Duncan Free Throw 2 of 2 (16 PTS)
(0:00) End Period

So, we will now recap what has happened here:

The lakers finish the month of November with a 1-4 record in games that were winnable for them ( 0-2 at home and 1-2 on the road ).

The 'most clutch player' in the NBA goes a whopping 1-6 FGA  down the stretch where a make would have given the lakers' the lead or would have tied the game with 3 TOs. And a mind boggling 2-12 FGA  total down the stretch.

Since both of those only equal out to a 16.7 % FGA :smh: Im guessing that since Wobe is the 'most clutch' player in the NBA...anyone shooting about 16.7% FGA or better down the stretch should go to the hall of fame (Using the local BGOL resident basketball scholar thinking  )

 @ you idiots that think Wobe is clutch.

The proof is right there yet Im sure you imbeciles will still be in denial. :smh:

Do that and show the same pattern and maybe someone will find you more believable.

it's a damn shame...

yes, i said it... it's a damn shame for SO many reasons...

1) cats can have their televisions on, but that doesn't mean they WATCH the games... even if their eyeballs were glued to the television, it doesn't mean they understand what they're seeing... they might as well be watching figure skating or gymnastics...

2) it's sad that so many fanboys have to be administered remedial basketball education just to get to a point where their nonsensical opinions barely become arguable positions...

3) because if they can't understand what they SEE unfold before their eyes on the court, THERE'S NO WAY IN HELL the fanboys can understand what written in unabridged text...

here's what charlie rosen had to say about tobe's D during the heat game:

Kobe was dominant on offense, and a patsy on defense.

At the same time, his defense is getting worse and worse. He reacted passively to every screen set in his vicinity — making no effort to get through, get over, or even get under. Whenever possible, Kobe leaned into the passing lanes. If he did intercept one pass, he also lost a pair of gambles that directly led to one basket scored by the bad guys as well as a foul being called on Kwame Brown.

Throughout the game, Wade obliterated Bryant's faux defense on fourteen separate occasions. (Kobe only played forceful defense against Wade on a single possession.) His lapses didn't all result in scores by Wade (11-24, 7 assists, 34 points). Some led to assist-passes, some to passes to wide-open teammates who proceeded to miss open shots or were fouled. Bryant also turned his head on numerous occasions — thereby allowing Wade a backdoor cut that turned into a dunk. Another neck-twister permitted Gary Payton to run out, corral a lead pass, and score a layup.

ho hum... more of same...

Makk,

If I had (or were to go back and look) at data from previous seasons, it would be more of the same. Now mind you, I didnt even look at December so it could have been even worse.

A clutch player is clutch because of his ability to elevate his game towards the end and play better than he usually is. Wobe is not that player and fans get confused because he will make the occasional big shot (Cleveland) but they are quick to forget when he misses the big shot (4 games alone in November '05).

I give Wobe credit for wanting to take the big shot, too bad he misses it more times than not.

But Im glad it finally showed you and your fellow groupies how inept you are when it comes to basketball.

"Free time" my ass. You know you had this posted in notepad ever since the season began and updated it after each game!

You based all of this on this season alone- why? Over the course of his career, Kobe has been a clutch player. There's a reason why he's double/tripled teamed at the end of most of his close games.

Not really... I simply went to NBA.com a few days ago when I had time off, looked up laker games that were close (whether W or L) and cut and pasted the play by plays from it and added commentary... Only took about 30 minutes.

This is the only season I had the data... Like I told Makk, I didnt even look up December (Which could have been better or worse...Im guessing the latter)

Sorry that the thread hurt your feelings but the truth hurts sometimes. I hope you arent implying that he was clutch and now he isnt...Or then that would bring up the argument that because of Shaq, he was better than he is now (Which is true). So just take it as a loss like the rest of your groupie friends and realize that Wobe is a good scorer, nothing more and nothing less.

MYTH 1: tobe guards the opponent's best scorer

so who did tobe guard this evening? mike bibby? predrag stoyakovic? shareef abdur rahim?

no, tobe defended kevin martin and rookie francisco garcia. tobe must've shut them down, huh? no, not really. kevin martin went 3-4 FGAs and francisco garcia went 4-7 FGAs...

ORIGINALLY POSTED ON 12/8

"the fakers can manage/tolerate < 10 of tobe's FGATOs, but if he has > 25 FGAs, the team is going to suffer and lose... PERIOD..."

so how did tobe sabotage the fakers this evening?

17-35 FGAs with 2 PFs and 4 TOs.

that's 20+ additional possessions for the sacramento kings thanks to tobe.

As a known Kobe hater, I've got to give the man his props for the last week and a half. Kobe has been consistant in point production, WHILE maintaining a high FG% and FTA. He has also been distributing the ball more IN THE FIRST HALF of games before he goes into ball hawk mode, which is why the Lakers are on a little run.

But, why does Kobe overplay the pass so much and go for the steal instead of playing straight up hard-nosed D? I've seen him overplay the pass and get beat to the hoop then the help D has to come over then that leaves someone wide open under the basket. I dont understand why he does that.

cranrab- cmon luke walton and lamar tanked that game with some help from phil's 'let em play it out' bullshit

smh

that game fuckin disintegrated because the whole laker squad lacks maturity and discipline
stupid shit too cuz they could have fed kwame down low most of the night and beat the shit outta the queens
toby is stupid though he thinks its 1 on 5 for real cuz he doesnt trust anyone on that team- triple teamed and still jackin it up :smh: shit had me mad as hell - someone has to be open besides luke to pass it to- fuckin puke walton puttin up airballs from 3

the lakers need a legit point guard that is a vet who can run shit cuz toby acts like a 5yr old girl

defensive rebounding was outstanding though and devean george should be more involved in the O as youve said before

Makkonnen said:

tobe went 2-7 FGAs in OT. tobe's impatience with the O (or with the other fakers) is no excuse for those brutal bricks he was chucking.

an AP writer observed this:

Bryant played the entire first quarter and demanded the ball on almost every possession. He finished the first half with 26 points, but grew visibly frustrated with his teammates -- particularly Odom -- when they didn't pass to him every time down the court.

Luke Walton got an earful from Bryant after the third quarter ended, but Garcia's defense was the real reason for Bryant's relative ineffectiveness.

Makkonnen said:

that WAS most definitely a herb smoker play. my boy b shaw was the 1st one off the bench to tell him so too. at the same time, lamar odom was also the person who gave the fakers a 5 pt lead by hitting the big 3 with 35 seconds to play.

Makkonnen said:
luke "no d" walton gettin schooled by shitty kenny thomas

luke walton had NO chance against kenny thomas in the post. a soft SF against a TRUE PF? NO chance. and kenny thomas isn't shitty.

Makkonnen said:
put brian cook on that faggot

brian cook must've fucked jeannie buss or coach jackson's daughter last week, 'cause he only saw 5 minutes. FIVE minutes of tick for a player that used to START. have you noticed that cookie has only been averaging 5 minutes per GAME since last week?

and kenny thomas is no faggot.

Makkonnen said:

as you know, i disagree. tobe lacks maturity, discipline, focus, and MOST OF ALL, a FEEL FOR THE GAME.

as noted in my post above, the fakers played well enough +4 w/o tobe on the floor. but even IF we were to assume the fakers are immature and undisciplined, THE ONLY WAY TO CORRECT THAT WOULD BE TO ALLOW THE PLAYERS TO PLAY.

and as i've pointed out (perhaps ad nauseum), tobe won't/can't allow that to happen.

Makkonnen said:
they could have fed kwame down low most of the night

i'm glad you mentioned kwame 'hands of stone' brown. did you see william parker and tobe literally GIVE UP on him? kwame got a few good feeds for potential lay ups, but couldn't handle the delivery. i don't know if kwame just has bad hands, isn't prepared (hands low, poor mechanics), or if it's a cognitive problem (poor anticipation), but WHATEVER the problem is, it negatively impacts his time on the floor.

Makkonnen said:

tobe needs to watch the ORIGINAL 'bad news bears' from 1976. it MIGHT be simple for him enough to absorb the lessons of what it means to be a TEAM player.

The Lakers are 0-7 when Odom shoots over 15 times. So what does that mean

it means stop reaching with stupid ass bullshit...

how many games the fakers won w/o tobe (post shaquille o'neal)?

how many games the fakers won w/o lamar odom?

damn, that must be a hard pill to swallow...

FYI, lamar odom attempted 15 FGAs last night. do you know that tobe MISSED more FGAs than lamar odom ATTEMPTED? you must think that's how HEALTHY teams operate. still scratching your head over why they lost?

leave the villification of lamar odom at the door. the TRUTH is that the fakers lost last night's game in Q1. the reason? tobe's STUPID play.

MYTH 1: tobe shoots more FGAs when his teammates are ineffectual.

take a look at when tobe is jacking up shots and you'll see the FGAs are NOT hot-potatoe'd, frustration shots with the shot clock winding down... tobe simply abandons the O and leaves teammates hanging.

TRUTH: tobe renders his teammates ineffectual when he shoots more FGAs.

WOW. deja vu. the fakers went 15 seconds into the O and got an assisted goal. GOOD basketball.

so while the IGNORANT fanboys were cheering on tobe's 6-9 FGAs (and handful of FTs) in Q1, what they were REALLY applauding was tobe insterting a dagger into the backs of his fakers teammates...

what the fanboys don't understand is that players need to stay warm and develop rhythm WITH THE BALL IN THEIR HANDS. can't be done if tobe's jacking up FGAs 5 or 6 seconds into each possession.

it's pitiful to hear baseless comments like "the O bogs down when the fakers just stand around and watch tobe". HOW RIDICULOUS. after 5 or 6 seconds, tobe's already launched his next brick. NO chance to stand around and watch. :puke:

I think Luke Walton is supposed to be really knowledgeable of the triangle offense (or something like that). It's becoming obvious to me that these Lakers needed someone else. Another superstar must be obtained in 07 because this crap just isn't going to cut it. KG doesn't sound bad :D

so how did tobe sabotage the fakers this evening?

17-35 FGAs with 2 PFs and 4 TOs.

that's 20+ additional possessions for the sacramento kings thanks to tobe.

You must not have seen the FG percentage before half time. Because the Lakers don't have a real second scorer, someone has to put up the shots to get the points that otherwise wouldn't get on the board. Unfortunately for him, that person is Kobe.

I think Artest couldn't possibly be any worse than what the Lakers have now. They have two losses, one of which should have never happened. The first one was a result of poor playing on Lamar Odom's behalf late in the fourth quarter. If I was Phil, I'd see that he didn't get paid for that game.

H, you should know better. i watched. as explained above, tobe's Q1 6-9 FGAs was the doom of the fakers...

Havoc said:

FALSE. this is a fundamentally flawed assumption. the fakers would be better off as a team if tobe shot less. just because tobe wouldn't score as much does NOT mean that the team would score less. NOR does it mean the fakers would lose more games.

tobe NOT hijacking the O would allow fakers teammates to grow within the O, understand the O better in game time situations, increase their on court comfort levels, and result in more Ws.

but wait a minute. when tobe came back, i bet the fakers REALLY must've pounded the suns, right? after all, tobe is allegedly the best player in the league, right? let's take a look at what tobe accomplished against this suns lineup:

the suns scored what? THIRTEEN (that's 13) points off tobe's FGATOs alone. that doesn't account for the points surrendered from tobe's piss poor D...

when you consider that the fakers as a TEAM only scored 19 points in Q3, it makes giving up 13 points a pretty big deal...

when you further consider that the suns as a TEAM scored 28 points in Q3, it makes giving up 13 points a pretty big deal...

Hey X,

THIS IS JANUARY (ALMOST FEBRUARY) WHY DID YOU GO ALL THE WAY BACK TO NOVEMBER TO GET YOUR STATS??? TRY AND KEEP IT CURRENT, OR IS IT WHEN YOU LOOKED AT RECENT GAMES YOU DIDN'T FIND ANY DATA TO PROVE YOUR POINT SO YOU WENT BACK AND BACK UNTIL YOU DID? get a life

:smh:

Bumbling idiots like you normally dont deserve a reply but I didnt post December because I didnt look it up. And after just looking it up, I decided against posting it, because I wouldnt want to see another grown man crying over the fact that his hero is a phony that was hyped beyond comparison by the media. :puke:

FYI... Wobe proved to miss more shots down the stretch in close games than he made.

lakers' wins in close games in December:

2 - Charlotte, @ Dallas - Which I wont even really count because IMO players should make FTs (the easiest shot in basketball) down the stretch anyway.

lakers' loses in close games in December:

5 - Minnesota, Houston, @ Miami, @Washington, Memphis

Look up the play by play...More of the same piss poor play by Wobe at the end trying to take over, resulting in the forthcoming L for the lakers. :smh:

You'd think that the league MVP (according to Steve Kerr) would...

never get out played on both ends of the court by a veteran on the downside of his career  but it clearly happened tonight.

Let's watch the final two possessions of the game and see how the MDP impossed his will on the outcome.

maybe they just don't know the difference?

example of clutch: dwyane wade's shot with 2+ seconds left in today's game v. the pistons... heat won...

example of NOT clutch: tayshaun prince's WIDE OPEN, UNCHALLENGED miss to end the game... pistons lose... :smh:

example of NOT clutch: tobe DRIBBLING OUT THE CLOCK and NOT even getting a shot off to end last night's game v. the grizzlies... fakers lost...
