Denzel to Daughter: ‘You’re Dark-Skinned’ So You’ll Have to Work Harder

What does the race of the director or how the movie was funded have to do with the Basett's skin complexion? Because that's what was asked: name some movies where Denzel's leading lady was as dark or darker than him.

You can't sugar coat shit. How many dark skin actresses you see on the big screen playing the part of the beautiful lead?

^this

My point Malcolm X was DAMN near an independent film.

With Spike at the helm he was going for the BEST actress.

regardless of skin tone.

Dont forget SOME people were tight that Denzel was too DARK for the role.

But MAJOR studios and even some smaller ones have to get that NATIONAL and GLOBAL play so they USUALLY dont do it.

MANY black actresses have spoke on it and I think they may be some threads on here about too.

This aint new.

Just to clarify, I was not disputing that colorism is a very real issue in hollyweird (and the rest of the world). One would have to be an idiot to do so.

I was simply answering a question that was asked earlier in the thread.

um i think you just proved the point fam
looked at all of those people you named? those people have CHOPS they aren't a pretty face and marginal skills every one of them is a triple threat quadruple threat and because they are so much more talented than majority they still have a career.

lets look at gabrielle union, nia long, and regina king. how many blockbuster movie offers have they gotten that weren't basically black movies?

think about how much more talented they are than someone like a blake lively or a anne hathaway but still aren't even considered a listers when they should have been a listers for YEARS

viola davis should be on meryl streep's level as far as recognition, legendary status, acclaim, and money and she's JUST NOW getting some sort of due, and STILL has to take marginal parts beneath her talents...

Anne Hathaway is pretty good. I certainly wouldn't take Nia Long or Gabrielle Union over her based solely on ability. As for Blake Lively, I don't think anybody considers her anything more than a pretty face/fashion icon. She's certainly not an A-list actress who gets to play great roles.

I do agree that it's sad that black actors rarely get to have great careers where they consistently get to take on interesting/quality roles.

Take Channing Tatum, for example. He's finally rounding into a decent leading man, but if he were back he would've never got as many chances as he has.

No you can't sugar coat shit but you can't smear shit on everything either....I'm not installing that light skin/dark skin nonsense in my children's head...end of story

Answering your question I have seen leads of all shades of black...next time I'll count them by shade I suppose to give you a better answer

Is there an app for that?

:hmm:

ive seen more range from gabrielle nia and regina, for them to not get the opportunities is lost. its not a slight on anne, but it does show the difference.

she's not an a list actress but she gets casts in big budget movies though for no real reason

and that's the point
how do you become a good actor, after you've had so many roles:confused: like we wouldn't be able to learn on the job like that

look first talent later?

Understandable, but you need to let her know how the system works that she is about to venture in too. The fact is Hollywood isn't color blind.

props to Denzel for keeping it 1000 with his seed

don't sugarcoat SHIT cuz they will find out one way or another

my point is where is his studio? production company? why are his children even having to deal with color based nonsense, when ultimately its greenbacks that matter

I can understand a middle manager telling his kids to grind, and to worry about race, demeanor, gender etc...but Denzel has made over 200 million easy in his career.....

I know that is not billionaire status, but damn shouldn't he own some shit by now, control some shit by now....pass on control...not a job training manual

shit at what level economically does it require for Black people to control our image, train our kids etc...if Denzel doesn't have the money who does?

Even if he doesn't have the studio, I think he should have implanted the idea in his daughter's mind to OWN one herself so she doesn't have to go through the nonsense. I'm tired of hearing the twice as hard speech. There's too many resources available to young creative minds now for that old garbage. The reason you would even have to work twice as hard is because in their system SOMEONE HAS TO. Why volunteer your children.

FUCK HOLLYWOOD. Denzel should tell her how things are done so SHE can do them HER WAY. With her friends. Which is the freedom other kids with opportunity are given ( especially on the mental level ) .

That's some real shit.

On the real, no matter your skin tone, YOU should work as if your life depends on it.

White people always get a pass though.

:confused:Anne is not A-list? I believe she's been nominated for an Oscar and name another white actress in her age range that's bigger than her. I love Gabby but what range has she shown in any of her movies other than being the cute black chick with attitude, same for Nia?

Blake Lively is the non A-lister were were discussing.

I think the "pretty girl" portion of his answer is separate from the dark skinned part. He is saying that if she depends on looks, she will have a shelf life. And As far as her skin tone, he is just saying she won't get a pass the way lighter skinned actresses may get because some white people can see some of themselves in Paula Patton types and may give them a pass or more opportunities.

yea i was talking about blake not being the a-list but having career opportunities simply cause of her color

and i was saying that the black women i named have the talent and should be a-list actresses

As for Denzel not owning a studio or production company, I used to feel the same way until I saw how much hell George Lucas went thru to get Red Tails out. Even though it was a bad movie, Lucas should not have had to use his own money to get it out. He's made billions for Hollywood. Denzel probably realized that its too much heartache involved in trying run anything like that. He and Spike could not even get funding for Inside Man 2. His name recognition alone will get his daughters some opportunities once she finish school. I'm sure she'll be able to get some roles on tv...

Nia Long and G. Union shouldn't even be in the same sentence with Ann Hathaway. Not that they can't act as well, but I have seen most of what all of them have done and they have not even done the type of shit Ann has and until they do, we have no way of telling. Sometimes we just throw around known black actresses and say they haven't gotten a fair shake. Regina however can blow all of them away and has the body of work to prove it. Fact is, most of these chicks, black or white are not really great actresses. That is rare air. That's why Meryl Steep is nominated damn near every year.

real shit

but sad shit nevertheless

Exactly. Being Black you cannot be average. Being a woman you cannot be average. Being dark-skinned you cannot be average.

Being all three you have to be super superior. Work harder, longer, be 100 times better than your competition.

This is what is needed.

Elevating the next generation to overcome the present obstacles.

He should have elevated the conversation to include how he thinks the obstacles can be overcome.

Plant that seed in her head instead of the old work twice as hard shit especially when it is to put money in their pocket.

Sounds like settling to me.

:hmm:

Fuck settling in 2012.

But if I was in here saying that about ya'll or if meatadow was, you ALL would be entertaining the fuck out of it lol

just sayin

who is "we"? how many times have i addressed you when you go on your rants? it's interesting you keep trying to find an ally in meatwad tho, when he/she has repeatedly expressed how inferior dark skinned people (not just males) are to everyone else.

no, other people read it too, so im not expecting anything from him but lurkers with this attitude might catch themselves thinking like dude

:dunno: suit yourself. in my experience tho, people like that (even the lurkers you speak of) their views aren't gonna be shaken by readin a convo on a messageboard tho...not knockin you or anything.
