Denzel to Daughter: ‘You’re Dark-Skinned’ So You’ll Have to Work Harder

As I said to another poster above I was taught that as a mentality that ALL black ppl should have...if I have a dark skin child and a lighter skin one I'm not gonna tell one she has to triple/quadruple her efforts and the other she only has to double hers

its not about us though, at the same time i was taught we're the same from a how I should view us (black people) standpoint

but the differences are made real by them, which is the focus

no he couldn't have
he's living in the real world not the make believe shit

being dark is another strike against you after already being black and being a woman.

Tru shit

That's reality, and reality makes some people feel uneasy with themselves when it hits them.

There is nothing wrong with being darker or a woman but don't get it twisted it will be held against you whether you choose to accept it or not!

I think that's b.s. whoopi goldberg, cicely tyson, pam grier, angela bassett, gabrielle union, nia long, regina king, etc. aren't light skinned and except for whoopi were considered beauties in their day. they have had longer and more successful careers than , rae dawn chong, vanity, etc.

that's what black people seem to be obssessed with skin color.

if anything your weight is what they'll descriminate against in show business.

um i think you just proved the point fam
looked at all of those people you named? those people have CHOPS they aren't a pretty face and marginal skills every one of them is a triple threat quadruple threat and because they are so much more talented than majority they still have a career.

lets look at gabrielle union, nia long, and regina king. how many blockbuster movie offers have they gotten that weren't basically black movies?

think about how much more talented they are than someone like a blake lively or a anne hathaway but still aren't even considered a listers when they should have been a listers for YEARS

viola davis should be on meryl streep's level as far as recognition, legendary status, acclaim, and money and she's JUST NOW getting some sort of due, and STILL has to take marginal parts beneath her talents...

Hopefully she's old/smart enough to not use that as an excuse or a crutch...but looking @ the pic she needs a shitload of talent to be on screen cuz her looks are not gonna do it for her...and that has nothing to do w/ her complexion...her father is probably the only reason she has a shot...I don't recall seeing her in any movies tho...so I don't know if she has the talent or not

don't even think she's made it that far, she's in college studying to become an actor, so that audition process and stuff hasn't even started yet

sad that with all the accolades he has, money he has,

he tells his daughter to start from a position of inferiority, emotionally speaking

White people tell their children to just get that shit, its never about immigrant, jew, irish whatever

its sad that even our greatest aren't raising the next level champions of economic CONTROL..fuck training for a job..what studio do you control?

how the fuck in this day an age we have a biopic on Jackie Robinson and James Brown...and NEITHER is made is a Black studio, or a by a Black director

cmon Denzel, tell the struggle, but shit do it better than this

I used to think whoppi was attractive when I was in my early teens and caught hell for it. I never thought she was as ugly as other people made her out to be. I mean she's no Angela Bassett but if she were truly unattractive she wouldn't even be on camera.

So true.

I have a feeling Will Smith understands this, but you never know.

He could've made as good a point imo w/o telling his daughter something about her complexion...depending on how she handles/receives that advice...she could develop a complex about herself/beauty...

Coulda simply stressed that she needs to be more than just a pretty face is she wants to make it in H'wood period...fuck it tho...it's his family and he knows the profession

Leroy she lives in the USA she's already got a complex.

i understand...

but how many major studios paired him with dark skinned lead actresses?

It's no secret that most movies are cast based on the white/euro perspective, if she is choosing ACTING as her profession then he has given her the BEST advice in the world.

Best reply thus far. You are entertaining white people not just blacks when you become an actor.

she wants to be an actress and he is telling her she needs to work harder than everyone else to inspire her
its not inferiority emotionally, its realism they really do act like that lying to the kids about the shit only hurts them when it hits them, and it will.

how many studios do they control? i don't understand that. why do people always say that, what makes you think he wants to own a studio?

and i can't begin to even tell you how to raise your child because everyone parents different and there is no right or wrong so i respect what you say.

but when my mom and dad told me about it, i took it as an issue with them, not me. my complexion me being black me being a black man were all POSITIVE things, and it was so positive that people were threatened by it and thus trying to turn it into a negative so in order to overcome this i had to work thrice as hard to overcome their own insecurities, and its worked for me so far.

ive never felt like being dark or brown was bad, i was made to understand however that being this shade, would cause people who were not this (white) to treat me a certain way, to act a certain way to deny me opportunities based on this gift i was born with. and it was an issue with them, not me

just my thoughts
and how i will explain it

There is right and wrong. And i could definitely tell you how to raise a child.

I can think of only 1 movie where Denzels leading lady was his complexion or darker - John Q & what else. And in recent years its been more non black leads opposite him.

It is sad indeed.

Malcolm X - Angela Bassett

The Mighty Quinn - Sheryl Lee Ralph

Courage Under Fire, Ricochet - Can't remember the female leads' names right now...

Yeah as real as that was something about it still rubbed me the wrong way

"you're darkskinned, you have to work harder, dont worry about being one of the pretty girls" ... it just sounded weird

But at least she is prepared for the real world now ... I mean hearing that from your own father, means hearing it from anyone else wont make you feel as bad for sure

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol: I love it!!!!

i understand...

my point is where is his studio? production company? why are his children even having to deal with color based nonsense, when ultimately its greenbacks that matter

I can understand a middle manager telling his kids to grind, and to worry about race, demeanor, gender etc...but Denzel has made over 200 million easy in his career.....

I know that is not billionaire status, but damn shouldn't he own some shit by now, control some shit by now....pass on control...not a job training manual

shit at what level economically does it require for Black people to control our image, train our kids etc...if Denzel doesn't have the money who does?

All four of Denzel Washington’s children have gone in to the entertainment industry. He says he has extra advice for his daughter Olivia who is currently studying acting at New York Universary.

In ‘The Actors’ roundtable interview with The Hollywood Reporter Washington shared the advice he gives to his daughter. “I say, ‘You’re black, you’re a woman, and you’re dark-skinned at that, so you have to be a triple/quadruple threat.’

Below is Washington’s full answer to the Hollywood Reporter:

I tell my daughter — she’s at NYU — I say: “You’re black, you’re a woman, and you’re dark-skinned at that. So you have to be a triple/quadruple threat.” I said: “You gotta learn how to act. You gotta learn how to dance, sing, move onstage.” That’s the only place, in my humble opinion, you really learn how to act. I said: “Look at Viola Davis. That’s who you want to be. Forget about the little pretty girls; if you’re relying on that, when you hit 40, you’re out the door. You better have some chops.”

Excellent drop. An hour well spent.

Tom Cruise just bought a studio in the last 10 years. Do you think it's easy to build a studio?

Malcolm X - Angela Bassett

BLACK DIRECTOR...shit Spike had to ask Oprah and dem for funding.

The Mighty Quinn - Sheryl Lee Ralph

:hmm:

Courage Under Fire,

Regina Taylor. she wasnt a LEAD.

Ricochet - Can't remember the female leads' names right now...

still not a major film..and she was at that go to black wife stage of her career

we talking MAJOR films.

that is a totally valid point..

but for a DIFFERENT argument.

He told her the TRUTH, period.

Based on his personal experience and the current climate of TV and film.

We can write a SERIES of books about black empowerment, ownership the black identity in film and modern media etc...

it IS our responsibility but as a father her chose to tel her the truth first and we are not given the ENTIRETY of the convo...

some of what he said might have and probably was said for effect!

And it worked.

And I think discussions like this are healthy (although tired) because WE need to take more responsibility about preserving our heritage and image.

ESPECIALLY when it comes to black women.

remember that Chris Rock joke:

He moved next to Jay Z Mary J. Blige...on one block was the best in R&B, Rap and Comedy and right down the block was a white dentist..

not the BEST dentist even in the damn neighborhood...

A dentist

nuff said.

Boom.

*two cents*

BLACK DIRECTOR...shit Spike had to ask Oprah and dem for funding.

What does the race of the director or how the movie was funded have to do with the Basett's skin complexion? Because that's what was asked: name some movies where Denzel's leading lady was as dark or darker than him.

Again, she fits the criteria of what was asked.

Regina Taylor. she wasnt a LEAD.

Okay, but she was the wife of his character. She played the part of the women he has a relationship with in the film and she is his skintone or darker...which is what was asked. :dunno:

still not a major film..and she was at that go to black wife stage of her career

How "major" the films are was not brought up at the time the "skintone" question was asked. Nor was the status of the actress' career.

Do whites have that same criteria?

Ive been told that a white criminal has a better chance of getting hired than a black non criminal.

Absolutely .... Go Check Out CNN's "Black In AmeriKKKa"!!!

A "White" Non Educated Criminal Would Be Hired Before A "Black" Non Criminal Highly Educated Person Would!!!!

1st Fired Last Hired!!!!!!!

I totally co-sign both of these.

There is no excuse for Denzil not raising the bar.

Ownership should be the goal, not employment.
