People are using a great deal of argumentation to rationalize their true objection to Sticks and Stones, which is simply that they don’t feel comfortable with a straight man poking fun at gay people. Because that’s what all this shit boils down to.

For some reason, there’s a refusal to recognize nuance when it comes to this discussion. White comedians can get away with poking fun at black people if
a) the jokes aren’t meant to diminish the subjects’ humanity and
b) the jokes are funny
For example, Bill Burr and Louis C.K. poke fun at black people and it’s not offensive because the jokes meet both criteria.
Dave’s gay jokes clearly met both criteria.
Again, people are bent out of shape because they don’t like to see a straight (and black, of course) male refuse to bow to the pressure to not make fun of gay folks. Everything else they say is bullshit.
What people really aren't realizing is that in life, sometimes there's double standards. And this is one of them.
Black people can talk shit about anyone because of what we've been through as a people.
But you can't talk shit about us.

I watched Brennan's Netflix special and it was all right. He definitely pales in comparison to Chappelle, no pun intended. I'd have probably called the special "pretty good" at the time but it gets downgraded to all right when putting him in Dave's shadow.
Generally, I think "making fun of" groups of people for immutable characteristics is wrong.
Sometimes comedians do it and it's funny. Bernie Mac's Kings of Comedy routine making fun of his sister's kids for mental disability and sexuality would be an example. It was hilarious but I'm not gonna say that shit was a good idea or honorable. I grew up on it and I can appreciate it but just because comedians like Seinfeld preach that funny outweighs everything, I don't have to take that perspective as a viewer or a grown man.
It's weird to dismiss any other aspect of the argument as bullshit but, at the core, I think making fun of gay people is weak (like I'd say of making fun of the mentally disabled). I still haven't gotten around to watching Bill Burr but I'm a big Louis C.K. fan. Can you post examples of him making fun of black people to demonstrate if your hypocrisy charge has any merit?
The whole debate on comedy topics is retarded. Only dumbasses are really trying have a dialogue on whether some shit can be funny. The whole premise of comedy is that whether you think something is funny or not it’s still a joke. Not to be taken seriously at the end of the day. Applying this rule about punching down is nonsense is horseshit. Gay bashing, child molesters, rapists aren’t created by watching a fucking comedy special. They were gonna do that shit regardless.

The backlash seems out of proportion to me at times. The people complaining about "outrage" are often just as outraged about dialogue and criticism as the critics they ironically critique.
To the outrage police, any criticism becomes an attempt to cancel. Nothing Jemele wrote that has been posted here is a hot take or even remotely linked to "cancel culture."
He basically said Hampton lied, and she tried to put Dave on blast. Guess she was mad because Dave called her a bitch. Shit was funny.
The chinese face was cringe worthy, BUT he did say that shit was offensive and made the point about how choosing ones counter identity, can seem ridiculous when faced with a comparative example. He could have made the joke without face-maybe. But damn Dave called folks N..s left and right, called people the alphabet crew and bisexuals gross..... No other comic could have been paid that much money, for this commentary, that is for sure. Jemele is picking and chosing on her outrage. I wonder if she uses the word N..a in her daily life? Man she is missing a step lately, something happened as part of her ESPN settlement, her former biting critiques are not as sharp and deep.

Why are gay people treated as hands off? Immutable characteristics--so sexual gender pronouns are immutable, what about having sex with BOTH genders? A society should adults to do them, but how does that mean you can't make jokes about it?
Why are their complex realities any less comedic than your average run of the mill, Black person? White comedians talks shit about Black people, or poor people, steal jokes, hide the commentary as a discussion of culture, all the time. It that is not a persons cup of tea, find another channel, or comedian.

I don't think that's a good comparison. When I say "making fun of" groups of people for immutable characteristics is wrong or making fun of gay people is weak, that doesn't mean I don't think anybody should ever be able to make a joke about Pete Buttigieg. But making fun of him for being gay is different from that. I don't think you hear white comedians making fun of black people for being black in that way.
LOL, fewer and further between as I get older. I never had an issue with any of Bernie Mac's stuff until I re-thought it. I agree the routines are classic but you don't see any fault there and you're really surprised anyone could find fault? If you re-watch, I think its pretty obvious. I'm not offended personally but I feel sorry for the kids and he's not setting a great example of how to treat people like that.
Dave isn't Pro-Life, he's Pro-Choice, there's a difference.
