Combat Jack Eric B. interview: Scars still cut deep with Rakim

but it just wasn't the same and I felt it wasn't an evolution of the sound either.

Yeah, now I try to look at it as the space they were in.

Back when I was younger, I couldn't even really view him impartially. I viewed him as the dude who messed up the Tribe sound.

Always wondered why Will sounded like Ra on Summertime.

Turns out this song was originally for Eric B & Rakim and they turned it down. Will's flow was actually a tribute to Ra.

Yep, sped up it even sounds more like something they would have done.

Shan did also.

That's why I was never that big on Dilla, because they were so much better without him

man Tribe was better pre Dilla, but Dilla was just figuring things out. Tribe also still liked each other pre dilla. All that ego shit and infighting fucked the game up. Dilla came too late and jumped the tribe sound too far, too quick.

When they did break up, Dilla took production into another stratosphere as far as chopping, sample choice and arraignment. Dilla had very few HITS (tons of absolutely wasted beats with slum village), but man the shit he did do, was masterful from a technical standpoint. His work with Badu, Common and De La are fucking masterpieces.

----------------------
and if Qtip made all those beats, wtf was Ali doing for three albums?? and if Tip was so fucking nice (I LOVE tribe shit pre Dilla and fucking consequence), how come Tip has not kept that level of perfection up with other artists? is it a sampling thing or what? Id take some Qtip 90's production with some of these emcees right now!!!

do all these artists not realize that 70's, 80's and 90's kids who are no adults now have money and want music to ride to still? attach to the new emcee, but bring back the only music.

Tip lost a lot of hos records in a house fire which effected his production tremendously. That's why Tribe became so Dilla heavy.... But... Please do not front on Q Tip... Tip helped mix and produce Mobb Deep's best album The Infamous... Tip did Gangsta Bitch by Apache. Tip is no joke.

I'd love to hear that album he lost in the fire. He had just finished it too.

thanks for clearing that upon Marl.

Good Lawd...so Tip REALLY made all those beats...

I just couldn't believe it that may be the greatest feat in music not just hip hop I mean music...

Because honestly... who can MATCH that catalog in hip hop?

I mean that would be only Dre, Preemo and I think not even Pete Rock makes the list?

but that was a CREW...

they telling me Kamal did ALL the beats BY HIMSELF!!!!!!!!1

If it is one thing I have learned in this music game is nobody does anything by himself. Q-TIP is a monster, there is no doubting that, but I have had the honor of being around some great producers, and everyone has somebody doing shit for them that ain't getting credit. With Dre, I always heard about Cold 187, Daz and others who did not get credit, With Diddy it was always D-dot and Stevie J, with JD it was Manuel Seal, Bryan Cox and this other cat, I think his name was L-Rock, With Timbaland I heard it was Devonte, and Missy, Pharrell gets all the credit, but I have seen them work and Chad is that dude. Like in Organized, Ray Murray does most of the beats and drum programming, and Rico and Sleepy bring other elements. Is Ali Shaheed Muhammed just a dj? I thought he helped produce a lot of that tribe stuff.

AGREED

but they claiming Ali was JUST the DJ it was ALL Q-tip.

IF that is true I swear on everything he is the greatest producer in hip hop

but IF it is true how he gonna explain

Kamal The Abstract album?

This is now old news and Eric's little big secret is known,he's not musically inclined at all when it came to the music his name happens to be all over on but rather maybe he's good at managing and getting the ball to rolling behind the scene's.

He stated is an interview he did with Jack before that while Rakim was doing what he was supposed to be doing he was handling the business for them and in doing so we can assume he might of made himself appear to be more involved than he actually was which makes him earn a bigger piece of the pie after the dust had settled;Fair, maybe I don't know but him and Rakim's relationship didn't end because of something petty but like most relationships end because of the almighty DOLLAR.

With this interview I look at Eric like I do a Suge Knight,he stayed down, learned the game and found a space where he could exist and capitalized off of it and still is today:Nothing personal just Business.

Aside from engineers mixing and input from Bob Powers, I believe Tip produced and arranged the first 2 albums by himself. Maybe even Midnight Marauders too. Brother @vandamation might have more concrete insight on this then me. Ali is dope producer though. He has placements outside of Tribe.

There's is truth in this. Toomp did a lot of stuff for Ye'. If Q Tip didn't do everything, he did over 95% of it. As for Ali Shaheed, he's also a musician.

It's not like Ali is a slouch...and Ali is a dope producer...but...the sound was Tip... Hands down.

In 86 or 87 I helped bring Eric B. and Rakim to Compton to perform at skateland. We picked up Eric and his boys first. That ninja didn't even know how to work the damn tables. He asked me to bring a set of 12's to his hotel room before the show to "practice" Seeing that dude "live" on the wheels of steel was a fucking travesty. Right then I realized he was a fucking fraud. Some dudes suck at scratching/Dj'ing but you can tell they have done it before. With Eric you could tell he had no skills or idea at all. He could barely get the record going man.

Props on this man! I was just listening to Summertime yesterday and dl some old Fresh Prince and DJ Jazzy Jeff. Jeff always seemed to wreck and enhance what Will was doing but I NEVER knew that about Eric B! That's foul man! So how did he blow so big if he was a fraud?

that was the original reason why he left the group, because he didn't have anything to add. whats strange, is that in 2015 he's suddenly trying to rap

Dres !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yo that beat aint bad at all

Jarobi look a little umm slow and stiff but salute to the vet!

Jarobi if it makes it happy go for it...but ummm I'd rather go to his restaurant...:D
