Combat Jack Eric B. interview: Scars still cut deep with Rakim

Nobody gets it right all the time bro. His memory of musical phrases and vision of how to put them together was exceptional. Perhaps not always and definitely not infinitely but he had it. Maybe the word 'samples" has you confused, perhaps I should have used "music phrases" instead.
Brah... I spent many nights in the studio around this man. Eric was NOT musically incline at all. Eric has business savy... Eric is an intelligent man... But he has NO MUSICALLY SKILL WHATSOEVER. The man did not know how to use any equipment. The man does not play any instruments. He didn't suck as a DJ. HE DID NOT KNOW TO DJ. Rakim is an infintely better DJ. Rakim and his brother, Stevie are the musically incline dudes of that circle.

man eric couldnt scratch a scratch off ticket let alone put a beat together..he was just the money and the face..rakim was the voice..
hell it was supposed to be eric and freddy foxx..but foxx wasnt with the bullshit..:lol:

Yeah, it was, but I never really found out why Bumpy Knucks didn't do it. Another thing I found funny, is that Freddie threatened to knock anybody out that said Ra was the GOAT, so I always thought his beef was with him, and not Eric.

Foxx was Eric's son

Okay. I'll take your word for it. I've never been in the studio with him but I am a musician and the couple times I talked to him his memory of phrases stood out.

That might explain how they sort of skipped over an entire part of his life. With most DJ's like with Prince Paul they go over who they grew up wanting to be, when andhow they started. With Eric B it went right from he was working at WBLS to Rakim.

Dre did the first album (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livin'_Like_Hustlers), but Hutch had a lot of the samples and ideas. And even so, Dre had cats working doing drum programming for him cause I did some. Dre is however one of the best at putting all the pieces together. Like I'd do some drums and hats, another cat would drob some bass, then we'd add a sample on top etc. Dre also has the luxury of spending as much time as he wants fine tuning his shit. So his mixes are always extra clean and tight.

Remove Dre from 187 and you get that verbaly simping, excuse me, verbaly pimping garbage that got ATL dropped from Sony.

Dave Glew was in charge of Epic then and was bragging on how the deal with Ruthless will bring them gold/platinum yadda yadda yada. The shit didn't sell and 187's dumb ass told Glew that Dre didn't produce it, he did. So behind the scenes Epic was like "That's why the shit didn't sell". So they told them, make an EP ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vocally_Pimpin'), they did, they shit was garbage and they got dropped. LOL

I can't lie, listening to the podcast and how Combat just let him run his mouth, I really thought I had gotten bad info all these years about Eric B not doing any music. Luckily I'm on BGOL LOL

I had no reason not to believe Eric before I came in this thread. Why can't brothers tell the truth any more? Perception is a mutha.

So WHO made all those beats?

Cause all of sudden I'm hearing Marley Marl aint make those beats...

that Q-Tip made ALL of the ATCQ beats...

I have no idea who to believe anymore.

Marley used to buy beats from dudes but he would rework them... For instance, Illegal Search by LL COOL J was originally a track that Large Pro did for Tragedy but Marley bought it and reworked it for LL... As far as Q-Tip goes... Tip did all of their beats.

thanks for clearing that upon Marl.

Good Lawd...so Tip REALLY made all those beats...

I just couldn't believe it that may be the greatest feat in music not just hip hop I mean music...

Because honestly... who can MATCH that catalog in hip hop?

I mean that would be only Dre, Preemo and I think not even Pete Rock makes the list?

That's why I was never that big on Dilla, because they were so much better without him

Marley is the FATHER OF ALL HIP HOP PRODUCTION... HANDS DOWN...NO DEBATE... Marley pretty much invented the drum kit.

Damn i feel the same way about Dilla ,Qtip 's production was much better

damn i understand

but this is in no way a thread dissing Dilla

all respect due God Bless the Dead.

He was an OUTSTANDING producer...OUTSTANDING

but it was hard for long time Tribe fans

I love J. Dilla music but it just wasn't the same and I felt it wasn't an evolution of the sound either.
