Police name officer who fatally shot 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant in Columbus

Paula Bryant told reporters at the scene of the incident that her daughter, 16-year-old Ma’Khia Bryant, was shot and killed by an officer in Columbus, Ohio, on Tuesday afternoon. Columbus Police released bodycam footage from the officer who fired his gun, identified on Wednesday as Nicholas Reardon. He has been “taken off the street” while the criminal investigation is ongoing. Columbus Mayor Andrew Ginther said based on the footage “the officer took action to protect another young girl in our community."

Let me get serious for a minute.

I remember being told, nearly 30 years ago, that if you see cops or hear sirens, you pretend it's the pause sound from Super Mario Bros and you stop what you're doing and stand still.

Because if you're arguing, fighting, or bracing like you're about to fight, the police are not about to play referee and break up the fight or argument they are likely to shoot into it, especially if the cops are white.

I've literally seen niggas who look like WWE superstars, throwing stiff ass punches, come to a complete stop and dap each other off and pretend to be friends when the police came just to not risk getting arrested or worse.

I’ve heard dudes get killed for pulling out wallets, driving while black, getting knee until they can’t breath.. even when you calm you’re not guaranteed to live when cops are involved

This one was clean. I'm not apt to side with law enforcement in cases like this, in this case, he did what had to be done. Girl was charging at the girl, knife raised. They're trained to put down the assailant in that scenario, and if he would have hit her once and she continued and managed to stab the other girl, that would be on him..

It's sad, but once in a while somebody has to be taken out and this appears to be one of those times. If she had been standing there with the knife, totally different story, but charging at somebody... :smh:

Shoot her 4 times though 4 fucking times!!! Nah im not buying that...

Why do people keep making up rules?

4 shots is not too much unless the person dropped to the floor before 4 rounds came out. You fire until the threat is neutralized that basically means until the person you are shooting at drops.

There is no such thing as a warning shot. Law enforcement isn't supposed to wildly fire their guns in the air. Where have you seen this practiced except in movies?

You fire at center mass not limbs. That way you're aiming at the largest part of a person's body and less likely to cause collateral damage by missing. It's also an effective place to shoot someone if you want to immobilize them.

As far as I know those rules don't change. Law enforcement or militarily feel free to speak up.

Well, they are trained over and over and over to kill.
It's hard wired. Center mass and multiple shots
that's what they are taught
A military/law enforcement person would tell you there’s no way u’ll be confused with a gun an taser and yet a 26 yr vet is using that line in order not face prison... hard wired to know where there weapon is located

Does she look like she’s capable of stopping multiple females from fucking up a child? Not everybody is thorough... this is why shorty had to up the ante with protection

Nah still not buying it; 1 shot is all thats needed; she wouldnt have kept charging; not it was excessive period!!!

Sad situation all around, but if she called the cops, why the hell would you run around outside charging people with a knife? When they show up AS YOU REQUESTED, you’re gonna be the one who gets shot. She basically called the executioner on herself. If kids are fighting, let them fight. If a kid is getting jumped, let the adults try to settle it. I saw one man kicking a girl, so clearly he’s capable of stepping in. All that being said, everybody around this girl failed her and they left it up to the officer to make a tough (but right) decision

And nowhere in my post did I state that standing still will guarantee that you survive an encounter with the cops, it was simply being taught to us that doing this was an attempt to survive an encounter with the cops. Keep in mind, my city's police department is currently under a consent decree and has been for 7 years due to repeated police misconduct, so I'm very familiar with police misconduct. Probably more than you, I was dealing with police brutality before I was a teenager.

I really don't understand you sometimes, it's like you don't take into account that other factors can come into play in some situations. Everything is straightforward and black and white with you.

In Ron Jeremy thread, you took it upon yourself attempt to teach me a lesson about consent when I was making the point that Ron's behavior was probably due to his years in porn and the fact that consent treated a bit differently in the porn industry and posted an article in which a female pornstar basically stated that there are "grey areas" in terms of consent in the business.

They use non lethal weapons various times when people were carrying knives.. there’s vids where they actually taze, mace people who had knives

Theres no consistency in their actions because they are individuals responding to
Individual situations in varied environments.

Add classism, racism, corruption, power tripping, apathetic attitudes and mental illness and that's cops in america.they are a reflection of the society we live in.

I'm just talking about when they discharged their weapon

Now they're saying the 16 year old stabbed a girl...

Ok. I watched that video ONCE. I hate seeing shit like that no matter who gets it. All I will say is from the stills it looks like a justified shooting. He prevented a death by shooting. He’s supposed to shoot—double tap at minimum. She was the aggressor at the time he arrived. 4 shots isn’t too many if it’s my loved one about to stabbed. If this poor girl is shown to be going for the kill or even close to that; this is a justifiable shooting. And because I won’t watch that video twice, did I see a man kick a woman in the face while she was down?

That's ok, you don't have to buy it. In that situation, 4 shots was not excessive. Excessive would have been standing over her and shooting her two more times after she was no longer a threat. A bad shoot would have been shooting her if she just had the knife in her hand and not going at anybody. Knife in hand, charging somebody though, multiple shots was not excessive.

Laquan in Chicago... that was a BAD shoot and excessive, because he had a knife, but was walking away and was not in an area where he was a threat to civilians. This was not that.

Dudes acting like cops really gonna jump in the ring and go hand to hand with somebody waving a weapon. Shit, they wanna go home to their family too. And I ain’t mad at it
The argument can't be it's tough to do the job so I didn't do it
If you can't do the job then don't be a police officer.
They are trained and held to a higher standard. It can never be how would we react to the situation
we weren't trained and paid to meet an expectation of calm and professionalism
They aren't deputies who were deputized by a random outlaw who came into the town

Cause if I didn't COMPLY or respect their INFINITE AUTHORITY over me I wouldn't make it home to my family
and then someone would say it was MY FAULT cause I didn't hold them to the higher standard they DESERVE and EARNED

just not when they're actually put in real situations

when they're fucking with you they are the LAW and serve a higher calling you listen to everything they say they know best comply

when its a situation for them to showcase this they're just regular dudes trying to make it home

Just my curiousity.

Does a one-shot kill or four-shot kill make a difference to you?
We should always question Lethal Force towards us period; I will always question excessive force towards us; it was excessive; 4 shots is shooting to kill period; not shooting to control, no shooting to stop, no shooting to deescalate; shooting to kill!! why is that ok?? and why is that ok towards us when countless of times, video after video, they never fire shots at whites!! so back to your question, I will feel a lot better with 1 shot to her body, not head; thats at least trying to stop her; maybe it kills her, maybe it doesnt; 4 shots though, come on!!!
