Car Heads: 2011 Cadillac CTS-V Wagon

I came back from Germany with a new found respect for wagons. That Caddy is very nice with very attractive lines. I would think caddy is taking cues from the success of the magnum.

A few words on a few words....

The magnum was anything but a 'success'. Which was why Chrysler discontinued it. Its LX brothern (300 and the Charger) continue its legacy though.

The reason why Caddy is building a CTS wagon has everything to do with competing with BMW...only in Europe. Wagons are dead. Nobody buys them. They are a niche market that has even less appeal than minivans. In the US that is. In Europe they have far more appeal, but even over there the market is shrinking in favor of crossovers and other utility-based vehicles.

The reason why GM is building this is because they need to round out Cadillac's portfolio so it can compete better with its main rival...BMW. It is BMW (not Mercedes Benz or Audi) that GM wants to emulate the most. The CTS-V was designed to compete directly against the M5. The wagon allows them to offer a similar vehicle to the M5 estate car in Europe. Heck, the BMW 5 Series and the M5 was THE design benchmark for the CTS period.

Expect a smaller version of the CTS to come around January of next year as a pre-production model. I expect in 2012 or 2013 for that model to be hitting show room floors.

Oh...and speaking about the Magnum (and 300 and Charger), its really an old E-class Mercedes with an old S-class suspension. Niggaz buy them, put cheesy grills and big rims on them, and never know they are ridding on a 2-generation old E-class platform thats been stretched complete with S-class suspension components. LOL The Mangum was canceled because Chrysler doesn't sell many vehicles (if any) over in Europe which is where the Magnum would have done the best at. They have very little international sales (unlike Ford and GM). The magnum never generated enough sales for Chrysler to continue to build it and make a profit, so it was axed. And the export so few cars outside the US, there wasn't even a big enough international market to keep it. Not to mention the Magnum kind of sucked as a car with Euro handling even though it has euro underpinnings.

Enough yadda for now. Out!

The Magnum started out pretty strong, they were all over the place here in the A. Then they faded out after a couple of years. They may bring it back as a new SUV, but Chrysler is still debating whether name it the Mag or the Durango. Oh yeah that wagon is sharp.

Just because you see cars in your 'hood don't mean they are selling worth a fuck, the Magnum was a failure for Dodge as far as sales go, if you lived around Detroit you would have thought the Mercury Marauder outsold the Ford F-150.

Nothing could be farther from the truth.
