Marc Stein broke the story about the Nets' planned offer for Dwight Howard. Later Wednesday, he told ESPN Radio that he thinks the Magic will soon trade Dwight Howard. And if the Nets offer Brook Lopez, two first round picks and other assets for Howard and Hedo Turkoglu, Stein says the Magic should take it. It's likely the best deal they'll get.

"I think they’re going to trade him now," Stein told Doug Gottlieb, citing Magic GM Otis Smith's comments to the Orlando Sentinel earlier in the day.

Stein dismissed the idea that the Knicks, Clippers or Lakers will offer a better deal than the Nets. This leaves little room to work with, and 6 players have become free agents that need to be resigned: J.J Barea, Caron Butler, Tyson Chandler, Brian Cardinal, Peja Stojakovic, and DeShawn Stevenson. There is only about $13 million to work with before hitting the luxury tax. With that money, these 6 players may be signed. The Mavs can not afford to target other, higher priced free agents without having to dip into their limited exceptions.

The Mavericks have 13 million to work with and Tyson Chandler's agent Jeff Schwartz has said the starting price for Ty will be 12 million.

there are plenty of teams who can trade multiple players to orlando for hedo and those players could be on 2 yr or 1 yr deals but their combined salary equals hedo's they they just amnesty him...then orlando amnesty's gil and lets those players expire.

OTIS SMITH: ``It’s hard for it to not be a distraction. You have to first figure out the road that he’s travelled in the past and figure out a way to keep the distractions to a minimum. It was a (distraction) a couple of years ago with LeBron (James), and I’m sure it is going to be the same way with Dwight and Chris Paul. If you are going to have one of the best players in the league, this is part of the program and at some point his contract is going to be up and you will have to deal with the matter of what’s next for him.’’

QUESTION: Do you go to Dwight at some point in the next couple of weeks or months and press him for an answer as to his future? Is it an absolute must to know what his intentions are before he becomes a free agent next summer?

OTIS SMITH: ``You have to do what’s in the best interest of your franchise because the future of this franchise is the most important thing at stake here. Dwight has been such a big part of our team and we’ve built around him for seven years. I really hope to get an indication of where he’s going so that our franchise can move forward. It’s tough to do that if we don’t have an inkling of what his plans will be.’’

QUESTION: You were a part of the management team that drafted Dwight, you’ve always had a good relationship with him and you have been around him for seven years now. Do you have a sense at all which way he is leaning as it relates to his future in Orlando?

OTIS SMITH: ``I can’t even venture to guess because it’s still up in the air. Because of the lockout, I haven’t spoken to him since July and there’s been no contact at all. I can’t really guess what he’s thinking right now, but I know he loves Orlando.’’

Chris Paul demanding a trade to the Knicks today was a major blow to Magic. The Magic had a Paul on their wish list of players to acquire to convince Dwight to stay. The Nets Deron Williams said he would opt out of his contract but sources say this is a financial move. Williams can earn 30 million more by re-signing with the Nets. Williams is also on Otis wish list but the Magic lack the pieces to make a trade. Sources before the lockout said Williams prefers a big market and wants to see what Nets can do in free agency.
