Board and Server update coming - details inside - ongoing

Yes I will, I'm looking forward to seeing what the new board will do.
They also have add-ons that are available, so we will keep working it to we get it right

HNIC

Can you share the features the new board will have once you figure it out?

I've already told you what to do. The upgrade is going to fall flat on it's face as:

1) you still have single points of failure.
2) you running a PHP based forum and are most likely going to be CPU bound as your are trying to scale vertically instead of horizontally.

vertically = more powerful machine
horizontally = multiple cheaper and less powerful virtual machines that can be more powerful the more expensive single one

The guys at MojoHost can get this setup for you if you ask. I'm pretty sure someone there has read Scaling PHP.

without looking over the entire thread, if this board doesnt go with something with some redundancies on the backend, its going to be much harder to get it right. In my small mind, the site should be running on at least 2 servers, and the database doing the same. Load balance them @#$@#$ and call it good. I dont see why cloud isnt a option other than the long term cost being a problem. just my .02.

I might vote for multiple medium sized VPS than any single server setup.

I would've thought the way the board has been running news of the board and server being updated would've attracted more interest. :dunno:

**Update**

I spoke with my host today, told him what I'm trying to accomplish, and the problems I need solved.
He already has and idea what he thinks will work best, but wants to confer with a few people then
get back with me next week.

I'm still going to make the move in the 30 day time frame, I along with the Mods need time to learn
the Admin section, features etc.

Thanks :shades:

Hi HNIC,

I'm an IT Support Engineer for a .com out here in San Francisco.

You guys might want to look into https://www.amazon.com/?tag=vp314-20 "AWS"

As we speak we are going to spin up about three servers and relieve our network of

bandwidth issues. My boss suggested I quickly get on board because this is what the

world is doing now. Also as you may notice it is very cost effective.

AL-T thanks for the suggestion. :)

The only problem BGOL has with services like Amazon is the content of this board. All it takes is for one of
the BGOL trolls to call Amazon and we are fucked. The current host I'm using now would give less than a damn
about a BGOL snitch, so I always know the board will be up and running at my current spot.

Mid next week we are going to move the current board (Vbulletin to the new server), during that same time
frame I'm going to set up a demo Xenforo board so the Mods and I can get familiar with the new Admin
function and features. Around October 18th we will make the full transfer to the new board setup. At that
time we will see if there is any improvement in the boards performance. I trust the knowledge of my host. We
will know by the end of the month if he is right or wrong.

Thanks Brother :shades:

thats easy to fake tho. i think rep points will be better. that way we see if members are trolls or great posters. if you see someone with negative rep points u know not to take him seriously.

that will be more effective than the star ratings. a lot of good threads get one star and a lot of bad threads get 5 stars. so if its a troll or negative poster u know to not even enter their threads.

The problem with that is that you might have a great poster start trolling. And this denies troll posters to turn over a new leaf and become great posters, as I am in the process of doing. As HNIC said, trolls are a necessary evil. :hmm:

Rep points are a better idea than any "confirmed black" thread or whatever considering trolls come in various colors. Plus you know the rep points are effective when known trolls start to worry

The rep scale works out pretty well on other similar forums

This message is to inform members that I'm about to upgrade the board software platform and upgrade the BGOL servers.

I'm giving myself 30 days to get this mission complete. We have over 10 years of content that needs to be moved and I
want to make sure I don't screw it up.

It is just the right time to do so. I'm actually piggy backing off TEN's How YOU would make BGOL perfect thread. Most of the
complaints such as search, notification of post being replied to and a like feature can be solved with a board upgrade.

I'm going to change the board platform to xenforo.com, Xenforo was started by the original coders of Vbulletin.

This will be an ongoing thread that I will update as I work towards getting the update complete.

I'll answer all reasonable questions.

Thanks - HNIC

Let me know if you need assistance. I have resources that may be of use to you.

10/18 can't wait...I might have to take the following monday off...this is huge

Co-fucking-sign!

You could if you have the know how. Keep Xenforo on a server frontend with the host he has now and PHP-FPM pools and RDS backends at Amazon. No one would know a thing as the "storefront" would remain with his original host. I've done if for a site that has just as much questionable content as BGOL.

nah those cloud services get too costly QUICK, this place isnt constantly making $$$ to justify a cloud type move IMO. I do think it would be well served with some redundant backend servers though, chit same on the front end lol but thats just me :D

hnic's current servers have a "pull to start" cord on them. :hmm:

once started, they run on old grease from dem chicken wing fryers. :smh:

once upgraded, dat debo fee gon be like $40 per year.

Just for your info I'm changing BGOL.US to BGOL.NET

This will not be a big problem I will have a re-direct to BGOL.NET
