This is the only thing I'm afraid of in this fukkin ass country...we need to make young cats realize the severity of ending up in jail/prison...I don't care if it's for 24 hours or life...

I hear brothas talking about crime and going well I will only get a few years for what I am doing. What they don't realize is that just by having that record can fuck you up. Hard to find a really good job, have someone rent to you( good places do criminal checks as well as credit now), and if you get pulled over when the cop runs your license and see that you have a record more than likely you will get harrassed and your car tossed.

this is from skip gates' documentary about black america, its available at just about any public library for free...but yall cats heard how he said when he got out of prison he was treated like a celebrity? about how folks reject education? we need 2 make some serious changes in our community man...whether or not that will happen is another topic though...

- yeah. and that is the side that BET and these major recording plantations don't like to talk about or show...

Man the part that hit me was when he talked about who it is young Black boys look up to in their neighborhoods due to "availability"...not fireman and policeman and doctors and lawyers and shit not even pops but drug dealers and 9 times outta 10 a mom that can't play both roles...

I don't get it, I didn't look up to drug dealers and my dad wasn't around, and I didnt' sell drugs, but then again, it's all in the individual and what they choose to be when they grow up, I chose school, while some of my friends, or former friends, chose to deal with drugs, that's their life, I can't do anything about their choice, it's like he said, they want to act like men so they're going to make their choice in life

Dem boy dummin in dat Charleo too now. Leeds Ave got over double the capacity the jail is supposed to hold and they buildin a new next door to that one jail right now. Charleston had 77 murders last year and already got 7 for the month of January.

That jail interviewee reminds me of my brother...

All dude wants to do is style and profile but will run like hell from education and mental stimulation, and will get real angry and upset with you if you broach the subject to him. He's been in and out of prison for most of his life and is virtually unemployable. When he got released from prison back in June [this was his 8th time being incarcerated at various state facilities for petty drug offenses] he played the role of a mental case and now recieves a "crazy check" each month. For those who don't know, a crazy check is a monthly SSI payment for those who are judged to be retarded, profoundly slow, or learning disabled.

Dude is 41 years-old and always talk about buying the latest fashion in coats, boots, jeans, and gym shoes. Five months had passed by when he was released and this DBM would still come over to my house to shave and get his haircut...this nigga hasn't even bothered to buy a damn shaver, hair clippers, and any other grooming products but walks around in the latest gear and clothing attire!

On the website he's listed as "Paroled," but he's actually back at Cook County Jail awaiting sentencing for another drug violation. I got kinda tired waking his dumb ass up off of my living room couch damn near every morning so that he wouldn't be late for his appointments so maybe this was my blessings in disquise. I now know that those so-called "appointments" were really drug selling opportunities this dam ass fool was still doing daily...he lied to me and said they were temporary "day jobs" for the holiday season! :smh:

His son eldest son [21], is currently serving 8 years penetentiary time for armed carjackin, so maybe they'll meet up in that environment since he wasn't much of a father on the outside and rarely saw his boy during his numerous re-entrys to jail and the Pen?

I guess I should give him a liitle credit this time for staying out of jail so long [5 months is record time for being on the streets that long!] the last time, but I still harbor a little bitterness though, because he ripped me off a few times in past...

I got a case on me now for some dumb shit, I pleaded guilty w/o an attorney present and got fucked(battery charges).

Yes, there is a definite unequal application of the law where black males, especially young black males, are concerned. However, niggas also do a lot of dumb shit. Three little teen aged idiots, here in Detroit, just decided to rob a nigga who'd just cashed his tax refund check. Of course, being the stupid niggas they are, they didn't just rob him, they killed him, despite his having begged for his life, and shot his cousin. An interesting wrinkle to this story is that the guy who was killed had just come back from Iraq. Now, being that these criminal masterminds were arrested within days of the shooting, how much leniency do you think they can expect from judge and jury considering the military record of the victim? Here in Michigan, they will be tried as adults and receive natural life. The shooter, who is 15, might do 60 years behind bars before he dies.

These dumb niggas made stupid choices and fucked their lives away, end of story. I grew up in a fucked up neighborhood too, and I never considered doing anything like this. I had plenty of opportunities to do so. Niggas were always trying to talk other niggas into "hitting licks," robbing Wendy's and stupid shit like that. I would just ask these idiots straight up, how much could we possibly get from robbing a Wendy's (especially when it's an inside job and you know the manger has cleaned the place out in advance) split between the four of us and divided by the 20 - 30 years of hard ass time we'll almost certainly get when one of you stupid motherfuckers takes your cut and goes immediately to the mall to blow it all on some conspicuously tacky shit you saw some rapper wearing?

I don't care what kind of upbringing you've had, unless a mother fucker is retarded, one would think they'd do some kind of informal cost-benefit analysis and realize that stupid shit like that just isn't worth the risk involved. And yet, the prisons are full of niggas who will tell you of the most nickle and dime harebrained schemes that landed them behind bars for a decades long stretch. I'm almost inclined to believe that these niggas want to be behind bars.

You'd be surprised at the high number of learning-disabled niggas in there with intelligence levels befitting a 3rd and 4th grader. And yes, some have become institutionalized and actually DO want to be in prison for one reason or another. These are facts that I am very aware of...

Like Tom on the Boondocks, that prison rape shit was enough for my ass not to be know where near that shit, and I lived in a fucked up project as well, and some of these fools choose this life, because they lack the courage, the intellegence and the will to work hard for something more, they just want shit handed to them, and prison hands out three squares a day and a place to stay :smh:

The Drug War's Unequal Justice By Arianna Huffington

June 08, 2000

Throughout the 20th century, which saw more than its share of inhumanity, the most common excuse about why such things were allowed to happen was "We didn't know." Well, after the report that Human Rights Watch released Thursday (June 8), we will no longer be able to use ignorance to shield us from the reality of the racial injustice being perpetrated every day in America in the name of the drug war -- completely ignored by national political leaders and barely acknowledged by the media.

The report, "Punishment and Prejudice: Racial Disparities in the War on Drugs," features a groundbreaking state-by-state analysis of the role race and drugs play in prison admissions. When 10 states -- including Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio and West Virginia -- send black men to prison on drug charges at a rate 27 to 57 times higher than white men, how can we continue to boast about our "equal protection under the law" when it's so obviously not true for so many people? The cookie-cutter excuse is that the unequal sentencing reflects an unequal use of drugs. Well, that excuse has also expired -- in fact, five times as many whites use drugs as blacks, yet 62 percent of drug offenders sent to state prisons nationwide are black. In certain states, that number climbs to an almost unbelievable 90 percent. So much for equal protection.

But the depth of this tragedy cannot be adequately communicated through statistics -- no matter how outrageous. It can only be conveyed through the personal stories of what this injustice has wrought not only on the nonviolent offenders but on their families and especially their children. Groups like Families Against Mandatory Minimums, Family Watch and the November Coalition perform a great public service by putting flesh and blood on the statistics.

"Dear judge, I need my mom. Would you help my mom," reads a note written in the 9-year-old scrawl of Phillip Gaines, just before his mother was sentenced to nearly 20 years after associates of her crack-dealing former boyfriend testified against her in exchange for lighter sentences. "My birthday's comeing up in October the 25 and I need my mom to be here on the 25 and for the rest of my life. I will cut your grass and wash your car everyday just don't send my mom off. Please please please don't!" Phillip is only one of an estimated 1.5 million children who currently have a parent in jail.

Sharvone McKinnon is another African-American mother whose boyfriend -- in her case, an abusive crack dealer who threatened to kill her if she left him -- helped land her in jail. She's also a particularly chilling case study of the madness our drug laws have led to: a nonviolent, first-time offender sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for conspiracy to distribute cocaine -- even though the government concedes she played only a tangential role and never actually used or sold drugs. But such are our draconian drug laws that even the least-culpable member of a "conspiracy" can be saddled with the most egregious acts of all the other conspirators. So based on the testimony of three of her 31 co-defendants that she was present at a single "organizational meeting" of her boyfriend's drug ring -- testimony that earned the trio serious sentence reductions -- this 34-year-old mother, a gainfully employed school-bus driver at the time of her arrest, will now spend the rest of her life in prison (at a cost to taxpayers of approximately $21,000 per year). I don't know about you, but I feel a whole lot safer.

"One of the problems of our justice system," a U.S. District Court judge told me, "is that the government is settling for very small fish that are easy to catch and easy to punish. The big ones aren't being pursued." Indeed, the inequality of the legal representation available to most poor defendants makes further mockery of the promise of equal justice for all.

The silence of both major parties and their nominees on this widespread injustice is the starkest example of the bankruptcy of the two-party system. Even the Rev. Jesse Jackson, who has endorsed Al Gore and will be campaigning for him, is not pulling his punches. "On this matter," he told me, "we have one party with two names, or two parties with one assumption. The assumption is that these lives can be thrown away. The change we seek can only come outside the two parties. In the same way that it took a movement to bring about the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act, it's going to take a movement to put an end to this tragic undermining of hard-fought civil rights victories."

The Human Rights Watch report makes it impossible for our leaders to claim they didn't know. Now it's up to us to demand some answers and an end to the inhumanity.

I think it's much more deeper than that...what you said applies to the criminals that are mostly homeless...what you'll find that most of these criminals lack is guidance and a positive male figure in their life...no father...no uncles...no grandfathers...no men in the community able/willing to step up just mostly looking down on them...I bet if we could get into the psychology of it...we'd see that those who rotate in/out of jail are just looking to fill that void of male companionship...and that void is so huge it sometimes borders on or crosses the line of homosexuality and we know that shit runs rampant in jail/prison...the shit is disgusting when you have young Black men wanting to be in a place like this...and it's nothing to get tossed in jail now...dude said 75% of the inmates in the jail in this vid are there for drug related crimes... :smh: ...that doesn't just display a lack of courage or intelligence it mostly displays to me a lack of guidance and resources needed to show these cats better since they may not have been exposed to this...now I'm not saying all these cats are innocent or whatever but if we had proper measures in place the jails would not be such a popular place for niggas...

Don't be confused about what the goal is..........

Blacks:
14% drug use
62% (some states 90%) incarceration
0% VOTING RIGHTS

What do you think would happen over time??????

Don't All U.S. Citizens Have the Right to Vote?

No. Most states restrict the voting rights of citizens who have been convicted of felonies. Each of the fifty states has different rules about who can vote. There is no federal law governing the voting rights of people who have been convicted of crimes.

In fact, 5.3 million Americans are disfranchised and cannot vote. Depending on the state, ex-felons may be barred from voting until they have finished their prison sentence, probation, or parole; paid fines; or completed a complicated and often difficult pardon or clemency process. Only Maine and Vermont allow all imprisoned citizens to vote.

Thirteen states disenfranchise ex-felons, sometimes for life. In these states, even citizens who have served their prison terms, completed probation and parole, paid any fines, and been reincorporated into their communities may be barred from voting, for life. Restoration of voting rights is a well-kept secret. State corrections authorities and elections offices rarely advise convicted citizens of their voting rights, and when they do, often distribute unclear and inaccurate information. For example, a recent survey by Demos and the Brennan Center for Justice found that approximately half of New York's 63 local boards of elections either provided misinformation or did not know the correct eligibility requirements for an individual involved with the criminal justice system.

Denying the vote to 5.3 million people undermines core American values. Ex-felon disfranchisement is at odds with the core American values of fairness, the right of citizens to choose their government representatives, and the ability of an individual to start a new life.

No other democracy disfranchises so many citizens. The United States is the only democracy in the world that takes the vote away from ex-prisoners who have completed their sentences. Many countries also allow prisoners to vote, including Denmark, France, Israel, Japan, Kenya, Norway, Peru, Sweden, and Zimbabwe. In fact, in a July 2006 report, the United Nations Human Rights Committee condemned the United States for disfranchising citizens who are back living in their communities.

It's part of effective rehabilitation. Voting rights restrictions fly in the face of our criminal justice system's goal of rehabilitating those with criminal convictions and reintegrating them into our communities. A recent study has offered evidence that those who vote are less likely to be re-arrested.

Disfranchisement perpetuates discrimination. Voting rights restrictions upon criminal conviction were enacted in many states to prevent African Americans from voting at a time when literacy tests and poll taxes were legal. More than a century later, disenfranchisement laws continue to discriminate. Nationwide, over 13 percent of black adult males are denied the right to vote, and black men make up 38 percent of the total disfranchised population. Furthermore, 17 percent of Latino men will enter prison in their lifetime, compared to only 6 percent of white men, replicating much of the political disfranchisement experienced in the African American community.

Momentum for Change is on the Rise

Since 1997, 16 states have reformed their felony disfranchisement laws, resulting in the restoration of voting rights to approximately 621,400 residents. In 2001, Connecticut extended voting rights to citizens on probation, restoring the vote to 36,000 individuals. New Mexico repealed the state's lifetime voting ban for persons with felony convictions and Tennessee has streamlined the restoration process for most persons upon completion of their sentence. In 2005, Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack eliminated that state's lifetime ban on voting by issuing an executive order restoring voting rights upon completion of sentence. Vilsack's order is estimated to have enfranchised 100,000 persons. Policy changes that lower barriers to voting for ex-felons have also been enacted in Delaware, Maryland, Nevada, Virginia, and Washington. Seventy-three bills relating to felon disfranchisement were introduced in the 2006 legislative session across 22 states. Only 11 of those bills could be classified as regressive and only one of these regressive bills was passed into law.

Emerging bipartisan, national support for voting rights. In August 2001, the National Commission on Federal Election Reform, chaired by former Presidents Carter and Ford, recommended that all states restore voting rights to citizens who have fully served their sentences. Thirty-one U.S. Senators recently voted for a measure introduced by Senators Harry Reid (D-NV) and Arlen Specter (R-PA) -- both former district attorneys -- to grant voting rights to ex-felons in federal elections. Many members of Congress, including Representative John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI), have also sponsored voting rights legislation in recent years and former Republican Congress member and Vice Presidential candidate Jack Kemp recently testified in front of a House Committee that ex-felons should have their voting rights restored.

Overwhelming public support for restoration of voting rights. According to a July 2002 Harris Interactive poll, 80% of Americans believe that all ex-felons who have completed their sentences should have the right to vote. The same poll found that over 60% of Americans believe that citizens on probation or parole should have the right to vote. Newspapers like The New York Times and The Christian Science Monitor have editorialized in support of voting by ex-felons.

How much sense does it make to keep running on foot from a sniper?????

Black men have a target on their back, running doesn't help.

We need to use the legal system to ensure their are equal sentencing guidlines else the rate at which black men are incarcerated will increase even though our drug use is 14% of the population.

most of these criminals lack is guidance and a positive male figure in their life

We are already in the cycle, their fathers are in jail, they are in jail and their children will be in jail.....

Imagine you trying to call your peeps on the payphone and some gangsta disciples roll up and say that's GD phone get your punk bitch ass off our phone. Then you touch the next phone and the Lords be like that is Vice Lords phone get your punk bitch ass off our phone. Then they will point to another phone at the other end that everybody else uses. Niggas be getting set on fire and brutalized. I have never been, but I know people who have been and you don't ever want to end up locked up with the gangbangers. They will mob and you and the other nuetrons can't fight them all. Cook County Juvenile ain't no fucking joke either.

When I was a practicing Social Worker a couple of years ago I was naive and had similar views and idealistic outlooks as yours, but not anymore. I woke up to reality after much experience dealing with niggas and realize that many are just prone to criminality and will not do right to save their own damn lives; regardless of family background.

Also, many of those sorry muthafukas do not take advantage of jail and outreach programs and are not deterred at the thought of reoffending and returning to prison. I've seen too much Larry, and I'm not buying your simplistic "lack of positive male figure" BS...

OK Larry (I only know of one person who even uses that word)...*suspicious*...the problem you have is the same problem Moblack has and the same problem I have...and that's that we worked/are working within the system...which can not work...and that's why I am attempting to offer my own services outside of the traditional school system...I'm not on some they all can be saved shit...but if you honestly feel you can not save a handful of these young men in the course of your lifetime then you are worthless because think about how many young Black men could be "saved" if most brothers who have the ability to make a difference tried to do so...don't tell me shit about naivete/idealism...just say based on YOUR experience YOU can't cut it so that is YOUR reality...don't tell me what I can do and what my reality is...

Man shut your dumb ass up. You don't even know my situation so don't speak. Working at a Title 1 school where your boss doesn't think you have a discipline problem takes a toll on you. At my school we have low TAKS scores, AYP list, and also we're on the list for Cheating on state test. We also have a drop out rate high as fuck as well. I have a perticular student who had pulled a razer on me. I got the weapon reported it to my principal and he did nothing. The same student has repeatedly threatened me , and also cursed out the prinicpal in front of other students and he still hasn't been removed from the school. His brother is tied with him for offenses. Just last week his brother had a fight in my room oh did I forget the kid took a punch at me. This was right after the prinicpal had left my room talking about some other related things. Heck the student cursed out the police and walked away from him. This happens to every teacher at my school and I've see the APs threatened. I teach Special Ed at my school and my kids don' t have an understanding of a social concept of what school is supposed to be. One thing is to teach, but just survival in a classroom isn't what I signed up for. Until you walk in my shoes don't judge me on what I'm going through. In the past 3 weeks I've gotten 2 new students who've just come from the Texas Youth Authority and another one of my students who just received a robbery charged from stolen auto parts. One of his co defendents took a 4 year deal already so I know it was something serious. Education in the inner city black schools has gone to garbage.

LOL @ this nigga telling me about Title 1 schools...I'm at a title one school AGAIN this year bro after reentering the teaching profession...so you are not telling me a thing...especially about all the things you are whining about...just do like the poster above who said he was a social worker...be honest with yourself and realize that you can't cut it...my mom is an old ass lady and she works at a Title 1 school and she has more control over most kids than this 6-foot plus ex-boxing idiot that is supposed to be a dean...why? Cause she can relate to the kids and they can relate to her...by reading the venom in your post I can see why they'd want to fukkin hit you...it's one thing to hate your job but it's obvious you hate most of the kids...so you are right you need to leave and be as far away from these kids as possible...you are no help to them...get mad and take shots back at what I said...but why waste time when what I'm saying is true...you do not want to be around these kids and they don't want to be around you...leave...I wish more useless teachers would leave the system too unfortunately most of them stick around...

Man, it sounds like your particular school is fucked up.

That, by no means, gives you the right to place all inner city systems in the same boat.

I work in an inner city high school that has a 70%+ poverty rate.

Ive worked with special ed students who are 17+ and cannot set up an addition decimal problem (yet he is living on his OWN...mom didnt want him so he went to live with grandma...grandma eventually died....and mom died before that).

The majority of my students could not work out a basic percentage problem... (they are on the 4th grade level mathematically)

My school attempted to mainstream ALL special ed.

I had a class with 6 cognitively impaired students and 14 LD students out of a total of 40 students in my class (with a special ed teacher for support of course...she was worthless)

My CI students had IQs in the 40s.

Yes it's fucked up.

Yes many of my students live in foster care.

Yes my students are prone to solve problems with their fists rather than their intellect.

Yes I have to damn near beg my students to do their work.

BUT....Im willing to make that sacrifice to better our own.

I have to reeducate them on what they can accomplish since they have been miseducated their entire lives.

WHAT THE FUCK?

Am I going to entrust their education into the hands of white people?

Fuck that.

@ moblack...do you really want to help young Black men or did you just hook up with the job cause you wanted a check (not a good one but a check is still a check)...to be fair it sounds like you are working in a high school in a bad area...imo if you want to help these "at-risk" children the earlier you get at them the better...that's why I chose to work in an elementary school...but if you are just in it cause you just graduated from school and you were just looking to jump in to a quick job then no matter what level of school you teach at you will always have problems dealing with the kids...

The fucked up thing is that Moblack said he teaches Special Ed.

Well what the fuck do you think Special Ed is?????

It's plain to see how "more black" he is...... it too easy to see the imposters

:smh:

The problem really is society...Blacks are second class citizenz in a land of Bill Gates, the rich Blacks are looked upon as the exception not the rule, throw in the drug culture and gang culture nationwide in areas where mainly blakcs livbe and so now since the mid-seventies black children shun education and all things equated with being a "square" or "lame"...children seek to be seen and heard so they chase popularity and respect...unfortunately in the metro area that consist of being violent, rude, disrespectful, overly aggressive, irresponsible, anti anything that would garner you the title of positive contributing citizen...every neighborhood I have lived in city wise has upstanding citizens, success stories considering the environment, but doctors and lawyers don't make rap songs, they don't have videos that applaud their actions, they aren't being heard in rotation all day every day on the radio...couple all that with the fact that many teens do have strong father figures, it just so happens that those figures aren't positively contributing, so to speak, i don't know of any real drug dealer or gang member who wasn't around an uncle or older brother or cousin who wasn't also a drug dealer or gang member, these children are being raised to promote a culture of ignorance and aggression, mothers aren't putting their sons in chess club, they aren't putting their daughters in etiquette schools...the concept is laughable in a discussion with them...one brother told me after I said don't smoke weed around the children, that I was acting like a "county boy," a sister, with a bachelor's and working on a master's at a prestigious university said I was "acting funny" because I don't smoke weed anymore...This is the culture that is representing us internationally and we wonder why the incarceration rates are so high, not only have we not fully climbed out of the slump of slavery, we look at our children as animals to be trained and sent to the fields, instead of our future presidents and scientist...
