Holstein was kidnapped by a group of white men and held for ransom. After several days, he was released and no ransom was paid.

Holstein eventually spent a year in prison for illegal gambling. Upon his release, he quit the numbers racket and became a full-time philanthropist. He died in 1944.

yeah I am thinking the same thing. Narcisse acting all high and mighty but you know he ain't doing much more for Owney Madden
He just knows how to articulate shit which is Chalky's weakness since he's illiterate. Don't rule out his son in law or his father.
They have just as much education as Narcise and you know they didn't introduce him for nothing

Dr Narcisse is scary. His 'my dear' was Vincent Price in its threat and elegance. Scarier than Gyp Rosetti on his best day.

I've liked Jeffrey Wright's acting since Basquiat and he was good in other things too. His delivery of this character did not disappoint. Probably surpassed what I could've imagined from the previews. Well written, but wow, what incisive acting.

My read of the woman excusing herself was that was pre-planned. Gave the men a chance to talk. And I thought "lady how stupid are you?" Not only did she try to actually pull the 'rape' story over on guys who really have heard it all before, but to two black men who may have either had that sort of false accusation in the past or may have known men who were killed over it? Way to rack up enmity among three men who already have reason to kill you.

I couldn't believe that was her sitting there in fact. Why wouldn't she be in, I don't know, Alaska immediately or as soon as possible. Did she really not know who she was dealing with all along? She was playing with fire pulling her stunts so 'close to home' to begin with. A bellhop or somebody and in a different city but a gangster in the same city you live in? What the - stupid. Stupid. (And of course taking the rest of it for granted as being bad and wrong and maybe evil too - goes without saying I hope.)

Narcisse is so interesting. He did something I know some black people do, make white people think that they're not like 'those black folk.' He made a comment about how he's from Trinidad, and therefore more civilized than Chalky; that gave Mrs. Pastor a false sense of security and caused her racism to rise to the surface when she suggested that a black man by lynched for "raping" her. Narcisse looked at her like, "I don't think so, I've heard this shit before." And she was a goner

I guarantee Narcisse knew exactly who Chalky White was before going into that office BY HIMSELF with no gun and no muscle.
Think he would've been up there if that was Nucky Thompson's office?? All he trying to do is fuck with Chalky White the same way Dun Purnsley did in that jail cell.

He ain't acting. He pulled real power moves, he came normal, he did pull all of the acts to the club he didn't threaten.. they feared him more than they feared anyone.

The white dude was working for him finding acts.

He was not intimidated by Enoch in the meeting, he let him know he was on his level with the kings line.. you have to respect me, don't look at me like you look at ole boy.

Then questioned the friendship and I don't even think he was doing it to look down on Chaulky it genuinely seemed like he was trying to open his eyes to see what he should be doing as opposed to what is going on..
